Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection surveillance: National Healthcare Safety Network's laboratory-identified event reporting versus traditional laboratory-confirmed bloodstream infection surveillance.

Hospitals must report cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection (BSI) using a new laboratory-identified (LabID) event reporting module. BSI rates obtained using LabID differ from rates of BSI obtained from traditional surveillance (concordance of healthcare facility-onset cases, 61%-76%) because definitions used to report LabID events are inconsistent with traditional BSI definitions.

Laboratory Characterization of Co-Infections in Individuals Infected with HHV-8.

HHV-8 infection can be asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals but poses significant risks in immunocompromised patients. As an oncovirus, it can lead to Kaposi sarcoma (KS), primary effusion lymphoma, and multicentric Castleman disease (MCD). While the association between HHV-8 and HIV is well-established, other co-infections remain underexplored due to the low incidence of HHV-8 infections. This retrospective, observational study examines twelve individuals infected with HHV-8 over seven years, focusing on patterns of co-infection and the diagnostic need for clinical management. The aver

Clinical and laboratorial study of HPV infection in men infected with HIV.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of precursor lesions of penile cancer, to establish the concordance of diagnostic techniques (PCR, Hybrid Capture (HC) and peniscopy with acetic acid 5%) in the diagnosis of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) of the penis of men infected with HIV and to evaluate the influence of the immune status. PATIENTS, METHODS AND RESULTS: 276 men were studied, with a median age of 34.6 years. Prevalence of High Risk HPV, Low Risk HPV and infection with both, according to HC, was 43%, 32% and 22%, respectively. PCR showed 50% of positivity for HPV DNA. Peniscopy was posit

[Research Progress in Laboratory Diagnostic Methods for HEV Infection].

Hepatitis E, an acute self-limited disease is caused by hepatitis E virus(HEV)and is a public-health concern for people worldwide. HEV is transmitted primarily via the fecal-oral route while direct evidence for blood-borne transmission has been reported. So the risk of blood transfusion safety caused by HEV has been widely paid attention. Here, we aim to provide some references to HEV screening for blood donors through analyzing the existing diagnostic methods for HEV, which are of great significance for the prevention and control of HEV infection. Currently, the primary detection indexes for

Clinical and laboratory predictive markers for acute dengue infection.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of dengue virus infection during the febrile stage is essential for adjusting appropriate management. This study is to identify the predictive markers of clinical and laboratory findings in the acute stage of dengue infection during a major outbreak of dengue virus type 1 that occurred in southern Taiwan during 2007. A retrospective, hospital-based study was conducted at a university hospital in southern Taiwan from January to December, 2007. Patient who was reported for clinically suspected dengue infection was enrolled. Laboratory-positive dengue cases are confirm

Microbiology laboratory clues to the diagnosis of HIV infection.

Microbiological investigations can provide an early clue to the possibility of unsuspected underlying HIV infection. These case studies were randomly selected from the author's clinical practice and do not represent unusual or uncommon occurrences; they highlight the constant need to ask Could it be HIV? when interpreting laboratory results.

An epizootic of Klebsiella aerogenes infection in laboratory rats.

Klebsiella aerogenes was identified as the pathogen in an epizootic of single and multiple abscesses in the cervical, axillary and inguinal regions in laboratory rats. Involvement of the salivary glands in the inflammatory tissue in some cases produced interlobular and interacinar fibrosis resembling "fibroadenosis'. Similar lesions were reproduced with a strain of Klebsiella aerogenes isolated from a diseased rat. Oral carriage of the same strain was detected in the diseased rats, and in normal rats of the same stock. Lymphadenitis appears to have been the primary lesion.

The clinical and laboratory diagnosis of Trichomonas vaginalis infection.

One hundred consecutive female patients attending an inner-city clinic for treatment of sexually transmitted diseases were evaluated for the presence of Trichomonas vaginalis by history, physical examination, 0.85% NaCl wet mount, Papanicolaou smear, and culture. Of the 100 women, 54 were found to be harboring the parasite, as determined by one or more positive diagnostic tests. This prevalence corresponds with that reported previously. The information gained from the history (symptoms and phase of menstrual cycle) and physical examination correlated poorly with results of cultures for T. vagi

[Laboratory diagnostics of HIV infection in the Czech Republic].

In the Czech Republic, laboratory diagnostics of HIV is designed as a multi-level system that integrates clearly defined legislative requirements, modern diagnostic technologies, and close interdisciplinary collaboration among specialists. Reliable and early detection of HIV infection is a key factor for the timely initiation of treatment, which not only benefits the patient, but also serves as the most effective tool for preventing further spread of the infection. The diagnostic algorithm includes highly sensitive screening tests followed by mandatory confirmatory testing at the National Refe

General Features and Laboratory Diagnosis of Toxoplasma gondii Infection.

Toxoplasmosis is a common infection worldwide caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an intracellular parasite. The prevalence of Toxoplasmosis ranges from 17.5% to 69.5% in Turkey. Toxoplasmosis is mostly asymptomatic. It may cause fetal mortality in case of vertical passage. The most common clinical findings in congenital toxoplasmosis are chorioretinitis, hydrocephalus and cerebral calcification. Another group of susceptible patients for Toxoplasma gondii are immunesuppressive patients. Reactivation of a latent infection in the case of immunodeficiency can lead to fatal toxoplasmic encephalitis. Sero

Laboratory confirmation of rubella infection in suspected measles cases.

As a part of measles outbreak based surveillance undertaken by the World Health Organization India, suspected measles cases were referred for the laboratory diagnosis at National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune and NIV Unit Bengaluru. Altogether, 4,592 serum samples were referred during 2010-2015 from the States of Karnataka (n = 1,173), Kerala (n = 559), and Maharashtra (n = 2,860). Initially, serum samples were tested in measles IgM antibody EIA and samples with measles negative and equivocal results (n = 1,954) were subjected to rubella IgM antibody detection. Overall, 62.9% (2,889/4,592)

Clinical and laboratory features of human Plasmodium knowlesi infection.

BACKGROUND: Plasmodium knowlesi is increasingly recognized as a cause of human malaria in Southeast Asia but there are no detailed prospective clinical studies of naturally acquired infections. METHODS: In a systematic study of the presentation and course of patients with acute P. knowlesi infection, clinical and laboratory data were collected from previously untreated, nonpregnant adults admitted to the hospital with polymerase chain reaction-confirmed acute malaria at Kapit Hospital (Sarawak, Malaysia) from July 2006 through February 2008. RESULTS: Of 152 patients recruited, 107 (70%) had
