Toxocariasis is caused by dog ascarid, Toxocara canis, forming eosinophilic inflammation such as eosinophilic abscess or granuloma in the liver and lungs. The lesions move slowly and thus the disease is called as visceral larva migrans. On CT or MR imaging, hepatic lesions are seen as multiple, ill-defined, oval lesions that measure 1.0-1.5 cm in diameter. Sometimes, the lesion may be angular or trapezoid. Cutaneous larva migrans is an intensely pruritic serpiginous eruption caused by the dog or cat hookworm. Often, the disease is self-limiting and no other significant pathology develops; however, a significant localized inflammatory response to the nematode is extremely common. We present a case of cutaneous larva migrans in which a systemic inflammatory process ensued that was characteristic of erythema multiforme. We discuss possible mechanisms of this complication and review the literature.

A young woman presented with recurrent myelitis associated with persistent eosinophilia in blood and CSF. Specific serological procedures in blood and CSF led to the diagnosis of visceral larva migrans. The patient recovered after 21 days of treatment with diethylcarbamazine. To our knowledge, this is the second report of myelitis in the course of visceral larva migrans.

We report three cases of children with visceral larva migrans confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), in Goiânia. Pulmonary interstitial infiltrates with dry cough and peripheral eosinophilia characterised the first case. Clinical and laboratorial finding in the second case included dry cough, pulmonary infiltrates, peripheral eosinophilia and hypergammaglobulinaemia. A persistent eosinophilia, between 1987-1989, without apparent cause led to the confirmation of parasite infection in the third case.

Two brothers with visceral larva migrans caused by Trichuris vulpis were diagnosed after they had been investigated for an eosinophilia. Both patients were almost asymptomatic. The diagnosis of visceral larva migrans was based on the results of immunoelectrophoretic studies and no liver biopsy was performed. After administration of thiabendazole, the number of eosinophils and serum total IgE levels gradually decreased, and the patients have remained well.
