A 23-year-old woman with long-standing insulin dependent diabetes presented with necrobiosis lipoidica. She was particularly troubled by the telangiectatic element of the lesion and therefore underwent test treatment with the pulsed dye laser. At low fluences minimal therapeutic effect was achieved, and at higher fluences skin breakdown occurred. This resolved with conservative management. It would appear that caution is required when attempting to treat necrobiosis lipoidica with laser.

Granuloma faciale, a rare, chronic, cutaneous disorder, is uncommon in children. Numerous treatment modalities have been used to treat granuloma faciale but none are consistently effective. In addition, many of the previously used therapies have unwanted side effects or are not well tolerated by children. We report a case of granuloma faciale in an 11-year-old child successfully treated with the pulsed dye laser. To our knowledge, this is the first report of this treatment modality for granuloma faciale.

Transendoscopic pulsed dye laser lithotripsy was effective in the treatment of calcium carbonate urothlithiasis in 2 adult geldings. Perineal urethrotomy provided convenient access for standing transendoscopic lithotripsy and evacuation of a large cystic calculus in one gelding. In the second horse, an obstructive urethral calculus was fragmented and removed by a transurethroscopic approach. Pulsed dye laser lithotriptor is effective in fragmentation of the most common form (calcium carbonate) of uroliths in horses and may be performed in standing horses with reduced surgical invasiveness and

BACKGROUND: Molluscum contagiosum nodules are common viral-induced lesions that are troublesome to treat, especially in children. I report the first study, to my knowledge, demonstrating effective, well-tolerated, and quick treatment of these lesions with the 585-nm pulsed dye laser.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness and ease of 585-nm pulsed dye laser treatment of molluscum contagiosum.
METHODS: Eighty-eight lesions were treated by double-pulsing them at 1 Hz (one pulse per second) with a 3-mm spot size (fluence, 7.0-8.0 J/cm2) or 5-mm spot size (fluence, 6.8-7.2 J/cm2).
RESULTS: E

An in vivo study was performed to evaluate the use of pulsed-dye laser beam for the fragmentation of salivary calculus. In accordance with the absorption and reflection spectra of sections of salivary stones, optimal fragmentation was achieved with a pulsed-dye laser with a pulse width of 1.4 microns and tuned to a wavelength of 504 nm. Further studies on particle size were conducted, and a new "sialoendoscope" technique was developed. Fifteen patients with sialolithiasis of the submandibular gland were treated. Under continuous endoscopic monitoring laser-induced shock wave lithotripsy was pe

BACKGROUND: Increasing the selectivity of laser-induced damage is an ongoing goal for the laser treatment of cutaneous lesions. The flashlamp-pumped pulsed dye laser has significantly participated and advanced this pursuit. This is especially true in its use for the treatment of cutaneous vascular lesions.
OBJECTIVE: A review of the development and current use of this laser for the treatment of cutaneous vascular lesions will be presented.
METHODS: The laser has been designed to limit laser energy absorption and damage to hemoglobin and the blood vessel. This has been done by setting the wav

The use of pulsed yellow light from a flash-lamp-pumped pulsed dye laser has provided a successful form of therapy to remove both the telangiectasias and irregular pigmentation associated with poikiloderma of Civatte. The short pulse duration and specificity of the interaction between yellow light and hemoglobin permit this technique to be performed on the thin skin of the neck without textural changes or scarring. Furthermore, use of the large beam diameter of this laser system allows for rapid treatment of large areas in a short period of time.

BACKGROUND: The effect of combined 585/1,064-nm (sequential dual-wavelength pulsed dye laser (PDL) and neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) laser therapy for acne vulgaris has not been evaluated.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy and safety of PDL and of combined 585/1,064-nm laser treatment for mild to moderate facial acne.
METHODS: A 12-week, randomized, prospective, split-face, double-blind study was performed. Sixteen participants with mild to moderate acne were treated with a single pass of a combined 585/1,064-nm laser on half of the face and PDL on the other half during each tr

Facial hypervascularity is a condition that manifests as erythema and edema caused by aberrant blood vessels. Often, the cause of these abnormal blood vessels can be attributed to previous trauma or vascular conditions such as rosacea, although sometimes the cause is unknown. Pulsed dye laser (PDL) can be an effective treatment even when the cause is unknown. We present a case of a 24-year-old male presenting with intermittent swelling, redness, and throbbing sensations of the nose and cheeks for the past five years. Physical examination was notable for prominent erythema and swelling of the n

BACKGROUND: Laser and light-based therapies have been used successfully in the treatment of rosacea; however, evidence is lacking regarding the efficacy of radiofrequency (RF).
OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the efficacy of RF in the treatment of rosacea compared with pulsed dye laser (PDL).
METHODS: Thirty patients with rosacea (erythematotelangiectatic rosacea [ETR], n = 20; papulopustular rosacea [PPR], n = 10) were enrolled in a randomized, controlled, split-face study. The patients were treated with RF on one side and PDL on the other side. Each treatment consisted of 3 sessions at 4-w

BACKGROUND: Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a benign contagious viral skin infection that typically resolves without treatment within months. For cases where treatment is recommended or requested, a number of options are available. Over the last 2 decades, a number of case reports and case series have described cases of MC lesions that were successfully treated with pulsed dye laser (PDL); however, a review of these studies has not been reported in the dermatologic literature.
OBJECTIVES: To review the use of PDL for the treatment of MC.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search of the National Library

IMPORTANCE: Pearly penile papules (PPPs) are benign, dome-shaped lesions found around the corona of the penis. Treatments have varied in the past; however, to our knowledge, the use of the pulsed dye laser (PDL) for this condition has never been reported in the literature. Such papules are histologically analogous to angiofibromas; thus, we report PDL is an appropriate, effective, and nonablative method of treatment.
OBSERVATIONS: Four patients diagnosed with PPPs were treated with PDL. Each patient reported little to no discomfort during the procedure. Minimal bruising was found in all 4 pat

Recent decades have seen the inclusion of acne vulgaris as a potential new indication for photodynamic therapy. Photodynamic therapy and light sources can be considered to be additional tools for primary or adjunctive therapy in patients with recurrent acne or those in whom it is not possible to use other treatments. We investigated the use of pulsed dye laser plus methylaminolevulinate for photodynamic therapy and have performed a comparative study of the use of this laser alone and as an element in photodynamic therapy.

We present the results of our evolving treatment strategy for pyogenic granuloma (PG) affecting cosmetically sensitive areas, from 1996 to 2007. Fifty-one lesions in 49 patients aged six weeks to 87 years (mean, 23.5 years) affecting the head and neck skin (39%) and lip vermillion (14%), limbs (31%) and trunk (16%) were treated. Fifteen lesions (29%) had failed previous treatments elsewhere. Forty-two lesions (in 40 patients) underwent pulsed-dye laser (PDL) therapy alone, using fluences of 5.3-9.4 J/cm(2) (Photogenica V) or 15 J/cm(2) (V-Beam) without dynamic cooling, at 7 mm spot-size. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In dermatology, the pulsed dye laser (PDL) is the therapeutic instrument of choice for treating most superficial cutaneous vascular lesions. In addition, clinical experience over the last decade allowed us to treat patients with an ever increasing number of non-vascular indications. The purpose of this report is to summarize and critically appraise the scientific evidence that support the role of PDL in treating non-vascular skin lesions.
METHODS: A literature-based study has been conducted, including the review of publications over the period January 1995 to Decembe

OBJECTIVES: The 585nm pulsed dye laser (PDL) is a promising tool for in-office laryngeal surgery. Data with respect to the safety and efficacy of the PDL for office laryngeal use is sparse. The purpose of this study is to review our experience with unsedated office PDL surgery.
METHODS: Records of individuals undergoing in-office PDL between September 1, 2004, and September 1, 2006 were abstracted from a clinical database.
RESULTS: Forty-seven patients underwent 117 treatments. The most common indications were recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP), Reinke's edema, and vocal fold polyps.
