This report represents an interesting case of a rare distal focal femoral deficiency with a complication of hip dislocation. The deformity at the distal femur was erroneously given an initial diagnosis of proximal focal femoral deficiency, and we believe that other similar patients have been given this incorrect diagnosis. Additional reports of such patients will allow further identification of associated pathology. This study describes the features of distal focal femoral deficiency, potential orthopaedic concerns, and proposes a classification scheme for this pathology.

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of the leg length discrepancy (LLD) in Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and whether there is any correlation between LLD and age at onset, gender, type of treatment, and severity of disease. The study population consisted of 261 patients with unilateral involvement who had reached skeletal maturity at last follow-up. All hips were treated by containment methods (bed rest and traction in abduction, Petri cast, brace, varus osteotomy, Salter osteotomy, and shelf acetabuloplasty). The late results were classified according to the Stulberg classif

Until recently the accepted treatment of choice for severe type-II fibular hemimelia has been Syme's or Boyd's amputation. The alternative of distraction lengthening using the Ilizarov technique is now available. We report three patients (four limbs) with type-II fibular hemimelia who were treated by the Ilizarov technique and followed up for two to six years. Severe progressive procurvatum and valgus deformity of the tibia and valgus deformity and lateral subluxation of the ankle were found in all four limbs. Multiple additional soft-tissue and bony surgery was necessary. In view of these pro

In spite of well documented standards for length and annual growth rates of the femur and tibia, there is little information on short term longitudinal bone growth. We investigated differential growth dynamics of the lower leg in 10 children, aged 6:3 to 14:2 years, by knemometry, a novel and non-invasive technique of accurate lower leg length measurement with a technical error of 0.09 to 0.16 mm. Mini growth spurts were detectable in 7 of the children and occurred synchroneously in both legs. Approximately half of the variance of the weekly lower leg length increments could be attributed to s

INTRODUCTION: Congenital distal tibiofibular diastasis is an extremely rare disorder. The main feature at presentation is a clubfoot deformity with leg length discrepancy (LLD) due to a short tibia. Limb lengthening and reconstruction techniques today can correct the deformity, ending with a plantigrade and functional limb.
CASE REPORT: We report a patient with congenital tibiofibular diastasis, who was initially treated with series of casts and later with ankle arthrodesis, but the deformity and LLDleg length discrepancy remained. We applied an Ilizarov frame and initially corrected the varu

This study arose from observation that in children will leg shortening from paralysis, the relationship between the tibia and fibula is disturbed. This article analyses 76 patients of post polio residual paralysis involving only one lower limb. Sixteen patients had fibular shortening. Several factors that interfere with fibular growth, i.e. anatomical continuity, soleus strength, abnormal forces at distal fibular physis, result in fibular shortening. Early the age at onset of paralysis, more is the fibular shortening which is associated with lateral wedging of distal tibial epiphysis, valgus a

To determine the most accurate roentgenographic technique for the measurement of limb-length discrepancy, the twenty lower extremities of ten cadavera were measured with use of both orthoroentgenograms and lateral scout computed-tomographic scanograms. The actual anatomical limb length also was measured, to serve as a control. The effects of flexion of the knee joint, use of an external fixator, cost and time of the examination, and exposure to radiation also were determined. No statistically significant difference in the measurements of the length of the femur was found between the two method

We studied 22 myelomeningocele patients with strong quadriceps and good ambulatory capability who had a dislocated hip. These patients did not have hip pain, had good to excellent hip motion and could sit with no difficulty. All but one was a good to excellent community ambulator with crutches and orthoses. Twenty-five percent had limb length inequality requiring shoe lifts but this combination did not impair functional capability. None owned wheelchairs. Seven had associated musculo-skeletal deformities which required treatment. We concluded that the hip dislocation in these patients was not

BACKGROUND: Few studies address frequency or magnitude of healthy lower-extremity segment response to ipsilateral companion segment shortening. We sought to document and quantify this occurrence in a variety of pediatric etiologies.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical record and radiographs of patients undergoing epiphysiodesis to manage leg length discrepancy. Inclusion criteria for this study were leg length discrepancy of a single lower-extremity segment by identifiable cause and adequate scanograms to allow accurate measurement of all 4 lower-extremity segments before any surgical treatment

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of different proximal femoral shapes on leg length discrepancy(LLD) after total hip arthroplasty(THA).
METHODS: Total 131 patients with osteoarthritis or osteonecrosis received unilateral biological total hip arthroplasty from June 2013 to June 2019. All patients' age, sex, side and pelvis anteroposterior digital radiography were retraspectively analyzed. There were 69 males and 62 females, 57 cases of left hip and 74 cases of right hip. The age ranges from 25 to 89 with an average age of 62 years. There were 48 cases of osteoarthritis and 83 cases of oste

The lower extremity has a mechanical axis with joint orientation that allows joint longevity and efficiency in bipedal gait. When normal alignment is lost because of trauma or other conditions, deviations from this anatomic norm may be deleterious to long-term joint function. In fractures that have healed with angular malunion, all facets of the deformity must be carefully considered, including alteration in length, rotation, alignment, and translation. Once all elements are fully defined, the effects of the malunion on mechanical axis and joint orientation can be understood. Techniques for su

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the natural history of congenital posteromedial bowing of the tibia (CPMBT) deformity during growth and to evaluate the outcomes of lengthening by an Ilizarov frame in CPMBT patients with limb length discrepancy (LLD).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 2000 and December 2019, a total of 22 patients (12 males, 10 females; mean age: 10.5±4.4 years; range, 6 to 19 years) with the diagnosis of CPMBT and followed closely from birth until skeletal maturity were retrospectively analyzed. The radiographic evaluation included the anteroposterior and lateral in

Posttraumatic, limb length discrepancy in adults is a challenge to treat, and multiple treatment protocols over the years have shown varying levels of success and complications. Before the introduction of the PRECICE nail in 2011, our preferred method of limb lengthening used an Ilizarov or Taylor Spatial frame. To assess the PRECICE nail, we evaluated the accuracy and complications during treatment in a series of skeletally mature patients with posttraumatic femoral limb length discrepancy. The surgical technique along with a case series of 8 patients are described in detail. On average, the

The authors report the first successful replantation of a below-knee amputation in a 7-month-old infant prior to the development of a standing and walking gait. Seven years following surgery, the child demonstrates excellent ankle and knee range of motion, has regained plantar sensation, and is able to walk, run, and jump without needing a brace. Despite a leg-length discrepancy of 5.5 cm, it is likely that future overgrowth of the injured limb will improve this discrepancy. This child has excellent potential for a successful functional outcome, given the very young age at the time of replanta

Thirteen children treated only by epiphysiodesis for inequality in the length of lower limbs were reviewed after maturity. The intention was to estimate the value of the predictions of growth used in this work and the effectiveness of the operation. The result of this procedure depends upon the accuracy in predicting the further growth in order to determine at what age the operation should be performed. The imperfect results of epiphysiodesis are attributable to prediction errors and to operation delay in some cases. Prediction can be made using only roentgenographic measurement of the femur a
