Oral leukoplakia in China: a review.

BACKGROUND: Most prevalence studies on oral leukoplakia (OL) in China have been published in the Chinese language. The present review on the literature in Chinese aimed at making the data available to colleagues who are not familiar with the Chinese language. METHODS: The overall rate and 95% confidence interval of OL were calculated using Excel 2003. RESULTS: Overall prevalence of OL was 9.18% (95%CI = 9.06-9.30%). Gender ratio of prevalence was 8.03:1 (males/females). Prevalence was high in age groups over 40 years with the highest in the group aged 60-69 years (21.04%, 95%CI = 19.95-22.13…

The interpretation of leukoplakia in laryngeal pathology.

Leukoplakia is only a descriptive clinical term designating a white patch or plaque of the mucosa and must be complemented by histology. On the other hand, keratosis is an exclusively histological term denoting pathological production and accumulation of keratin on the surface of the laryngeal epithelium. Leukoplakia is usually keratosis, but not always. Keratosis can mask various epithelial changes, from simple hyperplasia to invasive squamous carcinoma and is only the superficially visible manifestation of an underlying pathological process. Keratosis means total replacement of superficial e…

Relationship of leukoplakia to urothelial malignancy.

The records of 108 patients presenting with leukoplakia of the urinary tract during the last 35 years were reviewed to define the natural history of this disease, with emphasis upon its association with urothelial cancer. Of the 108 patients 24 had upper urinary tract, 78 bladder and 10 urethral leukoplakia (1 with renal and bladder involvement, 3 with bladder and urethral involvement, and 1 with ureteral and renal involvement). Presenting complaints were primarily irritative. To date, 41 patients (37 per cent) have had associated carcinoma of the urothelium: 23 (21 per cent) presented with a …

Candida biotypes in patients with oral leukoplakia and lichen planus. Candida biotypes in leukoplakia and lichen planus.

Prevalence of yeasts in 35 leukoplakia and 34 oral lichen planus patients was compared with that observed in persons without oral diseases. Serotype and morphotype were determined on Candida albicans isolates. Yeasts were isolated from the oral cavity specimens of 43.7% of the patients. C. albicans (serotype A) was the predominant species (76% in leukoplakia, 88.2% in lichen planus and 60.8% in healthy persons). Sixteen morphotypes were encountered on malt extract agar, being 732, 733, 734, 753 and 754 the most frequently found. Morphotypes SP1N and SP1Y were the most common on Sabouraud-tryph…

Laryngeal glycogenic acanthosis presenting as leukoplakia.

We report a case of an incidental finding of glycogenic acanthosis of the larynx on autopsy in a 79-year-old man who died of myocardial infarction. The lesion was grossly recognized as a white plaque (leukoplakia) on the subglottic compartment of the left side of the larynx. Histological sections revealed thickened squamous mucosa positive for abundant glycogen on periodic acid-Schiff staining. No epithelial dysplasia was noted. The patient had a history of smoking. This case represents the first report of glycogenic acanthosis involving the larynx. This benign condition should be added to the…

Hairy leukoplakia after bone marrow transplantation.

Hairy leukoplakia in 10 patients after bone marrow transplantation was identified clinically and assessed histologically. In situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus and human papilloma virus confirmed Epstein-Barr virus in hairy leukoplakia in two cases, and human papillomavirus in three cases. All cases with clinical follow-up resolved without treatment. These findings suggest that severe immunosuppression after a bone marrow transplantation may result in the development of hairy leukoplakia, and that as the immunosuppression resolves after the transplant the lesions also resolve.

Oral leukoplakia: still an enigmatic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Oral leukoplakia is the most frequent and representative potentially malignant disorder of what is known as oral precancer. Since the first descriptions, this pathology, which initially seems simple, has been the subject of controversy and discussion, and it still maintains multiple unknowns and enigmas to be solved. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A narrative and integrative review of the epidemiological, pathogenetic, diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic aspects of this important oral disorder has been carried out. RESULTS: Oral leukoplakia still presents multiple enigmas regarding its…

Randomized Controlled Trials for Oral Leukoplakia.

Oral leukoplakia is a white plaque with an increased risk of malignant transformation. Despite available treatment options such as active surveillance, surgical excision, laser ablation, and topical or systemic therapies, there is still a risk of recurrence and malignant transformation. We reviewed all randomized controlled trials on oral leukoplakia published in PubMed from 2014 to 2024 (n = 7) to identify emerging treatment strategies. These studies assessed the efficacy of topical Moringa oleifera, curcumin, beta-carotene with vitamin C, scalpel excision, carbon dioxide and diode laser abla…

Cotton-swab cryotherapy for oral leukoplakia.

BACKGROUND: Oral leukoplakia (OL) is a common oral precancerous lesion. Cotton-swab cryotherapy (CSC) is commonly used for treating skin lesions but is rarely used for treating OL lesions. METHODS: Sixty OL lesions were treated by CSC once every 2 weeks until complete regression (CR) of the lesion had been achieved. RESULTS: CR was achieved in all 60 OL lesions after an average of 6.3 treatments with cryotherapy. The number of CSC treatments required to achieve CR was significantly fewer for OL lesions on oral mucosal sites other than the tongue, those <2 cm2, those with epithelial dysplasia…

Chronic hyperplastic candidosis/candidiasis (candidal leukoplakia).

Chronic hyperplastic candidosis/candidiasis (CHC; syn. candidal leukoplakia) is a variant of oral candidosis that typically presents as a white patch on the commissures of the oral mucosa. The major etiologic agent of the disease is the oral fungal pathogen Candida predominantly belonging to Candida albicans, although other systemic co-factors, such as vitamin deficiency and generalized immune suppression, may play a contributory role. Clinically, the lesions are symptomless and regress after appropriate antifungal therapy and correction of underlying nutritional or other deficiencies. If the …

Secondary syphilis simulating oral hairy leukoplakia.

We describe a case of secondary syphilis of the tongue in which the main clinical presentation of the disease was similar to oral hairy leukoplakia. In a man who was HIV seronegative, the first symptom was a dryness of the throat followed by a feeling of foreign body in the tongue. Lesions were painful without cutaneous manifestations of secondary syphilis. IgM-fluorescent treponemal antibody test and typical serologic parameters promptly led to the diagnosis of secondary syphilis. We initiated an appropriate antibiotic therapy using benzathine penicillin, which induced healing of the tongue l…

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and verrucous hyperplasia.

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and hyperplasia are irreversible clinicopathologic lesions of the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract with considerable potential for evolving into verrucous or other forms of squamous cell carcinoma. Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia is a disease of the oral cavity in which verrucous hyperplasia is a part of its developmental spectrum. Verrucous hyperplasia, at other head and neck mucosal sites, may be associated with papillomas or be a de novo lesion. Human papillomavirus, as a cofactor, plays a role in some of the lesions. In the instance of verruco…
