It was shown that levamisol administered orally to mice induced production of interferon with its maximum level in 4-6 hours and prolonged subsequent circulation in the host (the observation period of 5 days). Antiviral activity of levamisol in experimental forest-spring encephalitis was shown (protection of 35-40 per cent). When levamisol were used in combination with polyguacyl, an additive effect was recorded.

The effect of the immunomodulating drug levamisole was tested in 33 patients with frequently recurring attacks of herpes labialis or herpes genitalis. All patients had suffered monthly recurrent attacks for at least six months, but were otherwise healthy. Seventy-seven patients with multiple common warts were screened for a double-blind study using levamisole. Of these, only 32 patients showed cellular immune deficiency. Fourteen patients received 2.5 mg/kg, two days a week, for eight weeks, and eighteen received a placebo. Both groups showed some improvement but results were not statistically different. Placebo plays a significant role in the treatment of warts.

INTRODUCTION: Description of a case of fixed drug eruption induced by levamisole.
OBSERVATION: Fixed toxic erythema with pigmentation was observed in a patient taking levamisole as an adjuvant to 5 fluorouracil chemotherapy for cancer of the colon. The imputability of levamisole was highly likely. Epicutaneous skin tests were negative.
DISCUSSION: Several types of skin eruptions have been described after intake of levamisole. It was highly likely that levamisole was implicated here and fixed pigmented erythema should be added to the list.

The therapeutic effect of levamisole was tested in a double blind and open clinical study in 30 patients with recurrent labial and genital herpes simplex. The frequency, the duration and the painfulness of the herpes eruptions were improved significantly under levamisole treatment. Agranulocytosis is an important adverse reaction which restricts the practical use of the substance. The increase of phagocytosis of granulocytes and macrophages and the normalization of defective cell mediated immune reactions are the supposed mechanisms of levamisole action.

Levamisole-induced vasculitis is an autoimmune vasculitis that is most commonly associated with the use of levamisole-adulterated cocaine. We present a case of a 35-year-old undomiciled woman who was admitted to the inpatient psychiatric unit for drug detoxification and evaluation of bilateral lower extremity ulcerations. Levamisole is a commonly utilized adulterant for illicit drugs such as cocaine. It has been associated with perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (P-ANCA)-associated retiform purpura in cocaine users. It is important for clinicians to recognize the typical location and clinical presentation of these patients to reach a proper diagnosis. We present a severe case of levamisole-induced vasculitis in a cocaine user to highlight the classic clinical findings and the diagnostic evaluation for these patients.

Administration studies of levamisole in horses were carried out using two different levamisole preparations, namely, levamisole hydrochloride oral bolus and levamisole phosphate injectable solution.
