Transmission patterns of smallpox: systematic review of natural outbreaks in Europe and North America since World War II.

BACKGROUND: Because smallpox (variola major) may be used as a biological weapon, we reviewed outbreaks in post-World War II Europe and North America in order to understand smallpox transmission patterns. METHODS: A systematic review was used to identify papers from the National Library of Medicine, Embase, Biosis, Cochrane Library, Defense Technical Information Center, WorldCat, and reference lists of included publications. Two authors reviewed selected papers for smallpox outbreaks. RESULTS: 51 relevant outbreaks were identified from 1,389 publications. The median for the effective first ge

Handgrip strength and health outcomes in hospitalized children or children with chronic disease: A systematic review.

Handgrip strength (HGS) is a simple measurement of maximum voluntary muscle strength and is widely used as a single indicator of overall muscle strength. This systematic review summarized the evidence about the relation between HGS and health outcomes in hospitalized children or chronically ill children. The primary outcome was the number of hospital days in a 2-month period for outpatients and the length of hospital stay for inpatients. After a systematic search in PubMed, Embase, Lilacs, and the Cochrane Library, 9282 unique papers were screened, 24 included. Studies assessed HGS in children

[The establishment of the hospital-system in the Byzantine Empire].

Byzantine hospitals developed out of Christian institutions for the poor and homeless. Philanthropy provided the initial impulse to create hospices (xenons) and to expand these institutions into specialized medical centers (iatreons or nosokomeions). However the Byzantine nosocomeions resemble more closely modern hospitals than they do any of the institutions of Greek-Roman antiquity or any of the houses of charity in the Latin West during the Middle Ages. Since the 4th century the Byzantine hospitals have stressed the central position of the nosocomeion in Byzantine society at the intersectio

Effectiveness of intraoperative blood recovery in surgical patients at risk of transfusion: A rapid review.

BACKGROUND: Allogeneic blood transfusion is widely used to manage surgical blood loss but carries risks, such as infections and transfusion reactions, and is affected by blood shortages. Intraoperative blood recovery (cell salvage) may reduce the need for donor blood, improving patient safety and resource availability. This rapid review evaluated its clinical effectiveness, safety, and costs in surgical patients at risk of transfusion. METHODS: Following the Cochrane rapid review guidelines, PubMed, the Virtual Health Library, and the Cochrane Library were searched for systematic reviews, ran

Inflammatory markers and clinical factors as key independent risk factors for frailty: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Frailty in older adults leads to falls, disability, hospitalization, and death. Identifying frail individuals is a crucial means to delay the onset of adverse results. Chronic inflammation plays a key role in the onset and progression of frailty. Our study aims to explore the relationship between inflammatory markers and frailty in older adults, thereby contributing to more accurate assessments of frailty. METHODS: We included 4,097 cases aged ≥ 60 years admitted to the Geriatrics Department of Beijing Friendship Hospital between July 17, 2018 and February 27, 2024,

Efficacy of Antibiotic Therapy Alone Versus Antibiotics With Percutaneous Drainage in Periappendiceal Abscess: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Acute appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies. Simple appendicitis can be a complicated periappendiceal abscess. Despite the fact that there are several treatment options for periappendiceal abscesses, there is no consensus on the optimal treatment method; some surgeons prefer appendectomy, while others prefer relying on non-operative approaches using antibiotic therapy with or without percutaneous drainage. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of antibiotics-only therapy to antibiotics plus percutaneous drainage in the management of periappendicular abscess. A

Hospital-wide interventions for reducing or preventing in-hospital prescribing errors: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Prescribing errors (PEs) in hospital care lead to patient harm, prolonged hospital stays, readmissions, and mortality. Despite interventions that successfully target 'high risk' populations in trials, PE rates remain largely unchanged in real-world settings. Existing studies often focus narrowly on specific populations, overlooking the wider complexities of hospital-wide prescribing. This scoping review evaluates interventions for adult inpatients to identify knowledge gaps in how to reduce in-hospital PEs. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE.com, and the Cochrane Lib
