Recognition and management of vulvar dermatologic conditions: lichen sclerosus, lichen planus, and lichen simplex chronicus.

Lichen sclerosus, lichen planus, and lichen simplex chronicus are dermatologic conditions that can affect the vulva. Symptoms include vulvar itching, irritation, burning, and pain, which may be chronic or recurrent and can lead to significant physical discomfort and emotional distress that can affect mood and sexual relationships. With symptoms similar to common vaginal infections, women often seek care from gynecological providers and may be treated for vaginal infections without relief. Recognition and treatment of these vulvar conditions is important for symptom relief, sexual function, pre

EuroGuiderm guideline on lichen sclerosus-Treatment of lichen sclerosus.

INTRODUCTION: Lichen sclerosus (LS) is an inflammatory skin disease affecting all ages. LS typically involves the anogenital site where it causes itching and soreness; it may lead to sexual and urinary dysfunction in females and males; however, it may be asymptomatic. First signs of LS are usually a whitening of the genital skin, sometimes preceded by redness and oedema; fissuring, scarring, shrinkage and fusion of structures may follow in its course. LS is associated with an increased risk of genital cancer. LS has a huge impact on the quality of life of affected patients, and it is important

Coexistence of nail lichen planus and lichen planus pigmentosus.

We describe a fifty-six-year old, Afro-descendent female patient showing dystrophy of her twenty nails and hyperchromic, asymptomatic macule on her face. Histopathological examination of the macule showed vacuolization of the basal layer, melanophages in the superficial dermis and lymphoplasmocytic inflammatory infiltrate. Nail biopsy revealed orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis and lichenoid inflammatory infiltrate. Lichen planus pigmentosus is an uncommon variety of lichen planus. It is characterized by typical hyperpigmented macules on the face and neck. Nail changes might be present in 10% of li

Generalized lichen amyloidosis associated with chronic lichen planus.

The development of lichen amyloidosis in a patient with chronic lichen planus is reported. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the coexistence of these 2 diseases. The disparate response of the 2 conditions to etretinate is discussed.

Generalized lichen nitidus appearing subsequent to lichen planus.

A 27-year-old man was seen with multiple, small, shiny papules on his shoulders, upper arms, and trunk, and hyperpigmented violaceous plaques on his feet. The former was diagnosed as generalized lichen nitidus and the latter, as lichen planus. It is not likely that the coexistence of the two diseases in this patient is a fortuitous one, since generalized lichen nitidus is a very rare condition. The association of lichen nitidus and lichen planus suggests that lichen nitidus is closely related to lichen planus and that the two diseases may be different manifestations of essentially the same pat

Mucosal lichen sclerosus/lichen planus overlap syndromes.

Lichen sclerosus and lichen planus affecting cutaneous sites are easily distinguishable clinical. Clinical signs on mucosal sites, however, may not allow differentiation between these diseases, and reliance is frequently placed on histopathological findings. We report a series of seven patients with clinical evidence of coexisting vulval lichen sclerosus and lichenoid oral lesions. All patients had vulval biopsies, and four had oral biopsies. Histology of all the vulval biopsy specimens showed features consistent with lichen sclerosus. Two of these patients developed vulval intraepithelial neo

Differentiating vesicular linear lichen planus and lichen striatus.

We present a case of vesicular linear lichen planus in a 62-year-old woman. This unusual presentation of lichen planus and other conditions in the differential diagnosis are discussed.

[Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus and lichen ruber planus].

We describe a 67 year old woman who suffers from lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. The clinical and histologic findings are mixed with those of lichen planus or respectively the alterations of both diseases.

Linear lichen planus pigmentosus of the face with histological findings of lichen planopilaris - an uncommon variant of lichen planus.

Lichen planus pigmentosus and lichen planopilaris are two clinically and histologically distinct forms of lichen planus. Lichen planus pigmentosus presents with sudden onset hyperpigmented macules and patches, predominantly in darker skin phototypes. On the other hand, lichen planopilaris is a scarring follicular variant of lichen planus that presents with progressive, permanent patches of alopecia. It is not uncommon for different variants of lichen planus to clinically coexist with each other. However, to our knowledge, there has been no previous reporting of linear lichen planus pigmentosus

Phytochemical Profiling and Antioxidant and Enzymatic Evaluation of Extracts from the Antarctic Lichens Polycauliona candelaria and Placopsis antarctica.

The high prevalence and incidence of neurodegenerative diseases pose a public health challenge and drive the search for alternative treatments. This study determined the chemical composition of hydroalcoholic extracts from the Antarctic species Polycauliona candelaria and Placopsis antarctica and evaluated their antioxidant and cholinesterase-inhibitory potential through in vitro assays and molecular docking. Using UHPLC/ESI/QToF/MS, 16 compounds were tentatively identified in P. candelaria and 11 in P. antarctica. P. antarctica exhibited greater antioxidant capacity (2.69 ± 0.15 mg GAE/g in T

Lichen nitidus.

Lichen nitidus (LN) is a rare inflammatory skin condition characterized by small, shiny, flat-topped papules, commonly affecting children and young adults. Its aetiology remains unclear, although immune-mediated pathways are suspected. LN is often asymptomatic, with papules primarily on the trunk, upper limbs and genitalia. Diagnosis relies on characteristic histopathology, notably a 'claw clutching a ball' pattern. Although it often resolves spontaneously, LN may present persistently, sometimes requiring topical treatment. This review highlights the clinical, histological and dermoscopic feat
