Reactive and endogenous depressive illness and five-year outcome.

Data on severe life events and major difficulties, collected by the Bedford College method from a consecutive series of 71 in-patients, diagnosed as suffering from depression using the Present State Examination, was used in order to divide the sample into those having endogenous and reactive illnesses. There was no distinctive clinical picture associated with either diagnosis and there were no important differences on any of the measures of outcome obtained from a postal and case note follow-up 5 years later. A similar comparison of reactive depressive psychosis and non-reactive depressive psy

The interaction of life events and relatives' expressed emotion in schizophrenia and depressive neurosis.

A history of life events in the three months before onset of illness was taken in a group of schizophrenic and a group of depressed neurotic in-patients. The Expressed Emotion (EE) of the patients' key relatives was measured. There was no difference between the schizophrenic and depressed patients in the rate of events in the three month period before onset or in the proportion of undesirable events. However, the two groups exhibited significantly different patterns of interaction between life events and relatives' EE. Schizophrenic patients living with high EE relatives had a low rate of life

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): three letters that change the people's life. For ever.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease affecting the motor nervous system. It causes progressive and cumulative physical disabilities in patients, and leads to eventual death due to respiratory muscle failure. The disease is diverse in its presentation, course, and progression. We do not yet fully understand the cause or causes of the disease, nor the mechanisms for its progression; thus, we lack effective means for treating this disease. Currently, we rely on a multidisciplinary approach to symptomatically manage and care for patients who have ALS. Although amyotro

On the continuous calibration of happiness.

The nature of happiness is considered. A model is reviewed in which the affect system is continuously recalibrated regarding a given domain of experiences as a function of the dominant affective tone those experiences have over time. In this view, people who experience repeated negative affect in a domain undergo an adjustment such that they become less demanding about the quality of experience producing happiness; people who experience repeated positive affect in a domain undergo an adjustment such that they become more demanding about the quality of experience required for happiness. Each re

Life-Course Brain Health as a Determinant of Late-Life Mental Health: American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry Expert Panel Recommendations.

This position statement of the Expert Panel on Brain Health of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP) emphasizes the critical role of life course brain health in shaping mental well-being during the later stages of life. Evidence posits that maintaining optimal brain health earlier in life is crucial for preventing and managing brain aging-related disorders such as dementia/cognitive decline, depression, stroke, and anxiety. We advocate for a holistic approach that integrates medical, psychological, and social frameworks with culturally tailored interventions across the lifes

We can work it out: A qualitative study of the work-life experiences of people living with type 2 diabetes.

AIMS: People with type 2 diabetes experience a range of negative work-related outcomes at a time when people are expected to remain active within the labour market for longer. This study sought to identify the work-related challenges faced by people with type 2 diabetes and ways to address them. METHODS: Recruitment was undertaken in two contexts and focussed on people living with type 2 diabetes of working age (18-67). A further inclusion criterion for participants was that they were registered as having at least one diabetes-related complication. Qualitative data was gathered via semi-struc

Adaptation and well-being.

An overview is given of the strategies individuals use to overcome misfortune and to restore their subjective well-being. Using adaptation-theory as a frame of reference, three groups of adaptive mechanisms are described, i.e., shifting intrapsychic criteria, cognitive reconstruction, and future-time perception. The differences and similarities with related theoretical perspectives (for instance, 'coping' and 'control') are identified. Many other theoretical notions are briefly discussed and given a place in the presented framework. In the concluding section the possible role of moderating fac

Life events and stress among young adults in weight gain prevention trial.

OBJECTIVE: Young adults (YAs) are at high risk for weight gain and show high variability in treatment response. Life events and high perceived stress are common in YAs and could drive less favorable outcomes. The goal was to examine whether life events and stress were related to program engagement and weight outcomes in a weight gain prevention trial for YAs. METHOD: Secondary analysis from the Study of Novel Approaches to Weight Gain Prevention (SNAP), a randomized clinical trial (N = 599, 18-35 years, BMI 21-30 kg/m²). Both intervention arms received 10 in-person sessions over 4 months, wit

Life Course of Asthma.

Asthma is a heterogeneous chronic airway disease that can vary over a lifetime. Although broad categories of asthma by severity and type have been constructed, there remains a tremendous opportunity to discover an approach to managing asthma with additional factors in mind. Many in the field have suggested and are pursuing a novel paradigm shift in how asthma might be better managed, considering the life course of exposures, management priorities, and predicted trajectory of lung function growth. This approach will require a more holistic view of prenatal, postnatal, adolescence, hormonal and

The relationship between patterns of negative life experiences and clinical presentation in a psychiatric sample.

BACKGROUND: Attempts have been made to classify the patterns of polytraumatization using a person-centered approach. However, most studies have only focused on maltreatment and interpersonal trauma and have been unable to examine various clinical symptoms. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore patterns of negative life experiences, including maltreatment, lifetime trauma, and recent stressful life events, and compare diverse dimensions of the clinical manifestations among the subtypes in a clinical sample. METHOD: We investigated childhood maltreatment, lifetime trauma, and recent stressfu

Applying a Life Course Biological Age Framework to Improving the Care of Individuals With Adult Cancers: Review and Research Recommendations.

IMPORTANCE: The practice of oncology will increasingly involve the care of a growing population of individuals with midlife and late-life cancers. Managing cancer in these individuals is complex, based on differences in biological age at diagnosis. Biological age is a measure of accumulated life course damage to biological systems, loss of reserve, and vulnerability to functional deterioration and death. Biological age is important because it affects the ability to manage the rigors of cancer therapy, survivors' function, and cancer progression. However, biological age is not always clinically

Adverse childhood experiences, adult trauma, and depressive symptom trajectories.

OBJECTIVES: Associations among adverse childhood experiences prior to age 18 (ACEs), subjective reports of trauma during Hurricane Sandy, and trajectories of depressive symptoms reported by community-dwelling older people were examined. METHODS: We analyzed 6 waves of data from 5,688 people aged 50-74 recruited in 2006 and followed for 12-years using multilevel mixed effects models. RESULTS: We found that: (1) people who experienced ACEs had trajectories of depressive symptoms in late life that were higher than people not having these experiences, (2) people experiencing two or more ACEs wer

The impact of adolescents' everyday life experiences on their primary hyperhidrosis treatment - a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperhidrosis is a disease affecting around 5% of the western population. The qualitative field within hyperhidrosis among adolescents has been sparsely investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of adolescent hyperhidrosis patients' everyday life experiences on their hyperhidrosis treatment. METHODS: Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were carried out. In total, 10 adolescents, aged 12-18 years, participated in the study. Data were analyzed using a set of inseparable activities as described by Van Manen. RESULTS: Three main themes were identified to

Associations between family factors, childhood adversity, negative life events and child anxiety disorders: an exploratory study of diagnostic specificity.

BACKGROUND: Chronic childhood adversity, negative life events, and anxiogenic parenting behaviours have all been implicated in the development and maintenance of childhood anxiety disorders. However, few studies have addressed whether these factors are associated with particular types of childhood anxiety disorders. AIMS: The aims of this study were to investigate whether specific associations were obtained between specific types of childhood anxiety disorder - namely, social anxiety disorder (SOC), separation anxiety disorder (SEP) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) - and the nature of p

The importance of being ironic: narrative openness and personal resilience in later life.

This essay applies a narrative perspective to the topic of resilience. On various fronts (physical, social, biographical), aging itself, it argues, pushes us past a perception of aging as intrinsically tragic and toward a more ironic stance instead, one marked by increased acceptance of uncertainty and ambiguity. Moreover, intentional engagement in narrative reflection-by means of integrative reminiscence, life review, and the like-fosters such a stance directly by facilitating narrative openness and, with it, "a good strong story" for coping with the challenges of later life.

Negative and positive life experiences in patients with psoriatic arthritis.

Recent data suggest that childhood and adulthood stressors may play a significant role in the development of an autoimmune disease. The present study explores the relationship between psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and positive and negative life events during childhood and adulthood in psoriatic patients. Forty-five patients with psoriatic arthritis and 101 controls (patients with skin conditions considered to be "non-psychosomatic") were enrolled in the study. All participants completed a specific questionnaire measuring traumatic life experiences [Traumatic Antecedents Questionnaire (TAQ)]. The T

Frightening visual hallucinations: atypical presentation of Charles Bonnet syndrome triggered by the Black Saturday bushfires.

Charles Bonnet syndrome (CBS) is a disorder in which psychologically normal people, often with vision impairment, experience complex visual hallucinations. The hallucinations are purely visual and do not occur in any other sensory modality, and people with CBS have full insight into the unreal nature of the hallucinations. This report describes the case of a CBS sufferer who experienced a distressing change in the nature of her visual hallucinations following a stressful event--the Black Saturday bushfires of February 2009.
