Ex Vivo Uniaxial Tensile Properties of Rat Uterosacral Ligaments.

This manuscript presents new experimental methods for testing the ex vivo tensile properties of the uterosacral ligaments (USLs) in rats. The USL specimens ([Formula: see text]) were carefully dissected to preserve their anatomical attachments, and they were loaded along their main in vivo loading direction (MD) using a custom-built uniaxial tensile testing device. During loading, strain maps in both the MD and the perpendicular direction (PD) were collected using the digital image correlation technique. The mean (± S.E.M.) maximum load and displacement at the maximum load were [Formula: see t…

Posttreatment Imaging of the Knee: Cruciate Ligaments and Menisci.

Cruciate ligament reconstruction and meniscal surgery are frequently performed for restoration of knee joint stability and function after cruciate ligament and meniscus injuries, and they contribute to the prevention of secondary osteoarthritis. In cruciate ligaments, the most common procedure is anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Meniscal surgery most frequently consists of partial meniscectomy and suture repair, rarely of a meniscus transplant. In patients with symptoms following surgery, imaging reevaluation for a suspected intra-articular source of symptoms is indicated and m…

3-T MRI of the Ankle Tendons and Ligaments.

Ankle sprain is the most common injury in athletic populations. Ligament and tendon pathologies of the ankle are common, ranging from traumatic injuries to degeneration leading to chronic pain and acquired foot deformities. MRI is the imaging modality of choice to evaluate tendon and ligament pathology of the ankle, specifically derangements of tendons and ligaments. 3-T MRI offers improved imaging characteristics relative to 1.5-T MRI, allowing for better delineation of anatomic detail and pathology. This article provides a review of the anatomy and common pathologies of the ankle ligaments a…

Comparative histology of mouse, rat, and human pelvic ligaments.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The uterosacral (USL) and cardinal ligaments (CL) provide support to the uterus and pelvic organs, and the round ligaments (RL) maintain their position in the pelvis. In women with pelvic organ prolapse (POP), the connective tissue, smooth muscle, vasculature, and innervation of the pelvic support structures are altered. Rodents are commonly used animal models for POP research. However, the pelvic ligaments have not been defined in these animals. In this study, we hypothesized that the gross anatomy and histological composition of pelvic ligaments in rodents and hu…

Pathogenesis of ligaments ossification in spondyloarthritis: insights and doubts.

Despite intensive research in spondyloarthritis pathogenesis, some important questions still remain unanswered, particularly concerning enthesis new bone formation. Several evidences suggest that it prevalently occurs by endochondral ossification, however it remains to identify factors that can induce and influence its initiation and progression. Recent progress, achieved in animal models and in vitro and genetic association studies, has led us to hypothesize that several systemic factors (adipokines and gut hormones) and local factors (BMP and Wnt signaling) as well as angiogenesis and mechan

Imaging of peritoneal ligaments by endoscopic ultrasound (with videos).

Double layered peritoneal folds or ligaments act as conduits for the passage of blood vessels in intraperitoneal organs and also provide a pathway for the spread of disease. It is difficult to identify these normal peritoneal folds at imaging. Computed tomography is the most common imaging modality used to detect diseases of the peritoneum. The ultrasound (US) has been also used for evaluation of diseases involving ligaments. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is being increasingly used both for diagnostic and interventional purposes in abdomen. In this article, we have described the normal EUS anato…

Biaxial mechanical properties of swine uterosacral and cardinal ligaments.

Mechanical alterations to pelvic floor ligaments may contribute to the development and progression of pelvic floor disorders. In this study, the first biaxial elastic and viscoelastic properties were determined for uterosacral ligament (USL) and cardinal ligament (CL) complexes harvested from adult female swine. Biaxial stress-stretch data revealed that the ligaments undergo large strains. They are orthotropic, being typically stiffer along their main physiological loading direction (i.e., normal to the upper vaginal wall). Biaxial stress relaxation data showed that the ligaments relax equally…

Dysplasia of the cruciate ligaments: radiographic assessment and classification.

BACKGROUND: A common pathologic finding in the knee associated with congenital longitudinal deformity is aplasia of one or both cruciate ligaments. We performed a radiographic analysis to assess the changes in the femoral intercondylar notch and the tibial eminence in relation to the status of the cruciate ligaments. METHODS: Thirty-four knees in thirty-one patients with longitudinal congenital deficiency of the lower limb were evaluated. The cruciate ligaments and the associated abnormalities of the distal aspect of the femur and the proximal aspect of the tibia were evaluated with use of ma…

Arthroscopic humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligaments (HAGL) repair.

Humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligaments (HAGL lesion) is one of the pathologic lesions that occurs secondary to anterior glenohumeral instability. Although HAGL lesions occur less commonly than Bankart lesions in cases of anterior instability, it is necessary to understand this pathology and to make the necessary repair. An all-arthroscopic technique using suture anchors can be used to repair HAGL lesions, but it is a difficult and demanding technique. To facilitate this type of repair, the surgeon must be: (1) comfortable with both the 30 degrees and 70 degrees arthroscopes, (2) able t…

Nonuniform distribution of collagen density in human knee ligaments.

It is generally recognized that the mechanical properties of soft connective tissues are affected by their structural components. We documented collagen density distributions in human knee ligaments to quantify differences in density within and between these ligaments. In order to explain the variations in mechanical properties within and between different knee ligaments as described in the literature, the distributions of collagen density were correlated with these biomechanical findings. Human knee ligaments were shown to be nonhomogeneous structures with regard to collagen density. The ante…

[Experimental evaluation of various anchoring techniques for synthetic ligaments].

One of the weak points of augmentation or replacement of cruciate ligaments by synthetic material is the fixation of these artificial ligaments to the bone. The present investigation examines the mechanical properties of a newly developed anchoring technique (ligament fixation device = LFD) in regard to linear and maximum load, stiffness, creep, and long-term durability compared to single staples, double staples in belt buckle technique, and passing the ligament through an additional bone tunnel. The tests are carried out on cadaver knees and plastic bones under standardized conditions with th…

Label-free structural and mechanical characterization of rat uterosacral ligaments.

This study presents quantitative applications of label-free imaging methods to characterize the structure of the uterosacral ligaments (USLs) before, during, and after loading. Rat USLs (n=14) were excised with their spinal and cervical attachments, clamped at these attachment sites, and pulled uniaxially in a custom-built tensile testing machine along their main in vivo loading direction. During uniaxial testing, optical coherence tomography (OCT) images were recorded, revealing the re-arrangement and failure of the structural components of the USLs. Before and after uniaxial testing, second …
