Effect of alpha linolenic acid on membrane fluidity and respiration of liver mitochondria in normoglycemic and diabetic Wistar rats.

The omega 3 fatty acids (ω3FA) have been recommended for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and its complications, but there are studies questioning those beneficial effects. In this research, we supplemented the short-chain ω3FA, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), to a model of rats with T2DM and normoglycemic controls, for 5 months. We were mainly interested in studying the effects of diabetes and ALA on the physicochemical properties of mitochondrial membranes and the consequences on mitochondrial respiration. We found that the Respiratory Control (RC) of diabetic rats was 46% lower

Gamma-linolenic acid induces apoptosis and lipid peroxidation in human chronic myelogenous leukemia K562 cells.

Various polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), inhibit the growth of a variety of tumor cells. Some evidence indicates that polyunsaturated fatty acid can kill cells by apoptosis. In the current study, we tested the apoptotic effect of GLA on human chronic myelogenous leukemia K562 cells. GLA induced K562 cell death in a dose-dependent manner. Typical apoptotic nuclei were shown by staining of K562 cells with DNA-binding fluorochrome Hoechst 33342, characterized by chromatin condensation and nuclear fragmentation. Flow cytometric analysis also demonstrated that GLA

Long-term use of gamma-linolenic acid-enriched fat emulsion (PFE 4501): case report.

A new gamma-linolenic acid-enriched fat emulsion (PFE 4501) was given for 13 mo as part of a home parenteral nutrition regimen to a 28-yr-old patient with cystic fibrosis. Blood biochemistry, hematological data, and fatty acid profile were followed. No side effects were reported, and pulmonary function tests remained stable. gamma-Linolenic acid appears to be safe for clinical use and may benefit patients with derangements in essential fatty acid metabolism. The potential role of a gamma-linolenic acid-enriched intravenous fat emulsion is discussed.

Effect of fungal gamma-linolenic acid and beta-carotene containing prefermented feed on immunity and gut of broiler chicken.

Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is a fatty acid from the ω-6 family. It is able to deliver a wide range of health benefits arising from its anti-inflammatory effects. An insufficient supply of GLA from agricultural and animal sources resulted in the development of a fermentation technique using lower filamentous fungi, which have the ability to accumulate high concentrations of GLA and beta-carotene during solid-state fermentation of cereals. The goal of this study was to observe the influence of the addition of prefermented cereal product, containing high amounts of GLA and beta-carotene, into the

Dietary 1,3-diacylglycerols rich in γ-linolenic and stearidonic acids improve metabolic parameters and tissue lipid profiles in high-fat diet-induced obese mice.

Structured lipids (SLs) enriched in γ-linolenic acid (GLA) and stearidonic acid (SDA) were synthesized as 1,3-diacylglycerols (1,3-DAGs) and evaluated in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity mouse model. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed control or HFD diets, with or without 2% SL supplementation, for 12 weeks. HFD feeding markedly increased the body weight, hepatic steatosis, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, inflammation, and oxidative stress and altered hepatic gene expression. SL supplementation significantly attenuated weight gain without affecting the energy intake, reduced hepatic steatosis

α-linolenic acid-induced facilitation of GABAergic synaptic transmission is mediated via acid-sensing ion channel (ASIC1a) activity in the basolateral amygdala.

ABSTRACT: To enhance the reliability and stability of information acquisition, biological perception systems have gradually evolved from unimodal processing to multimodal integration mechanisms. Audio-visual cross-modal integration, in particular, has demonstrated robustness and generalization capabilities in key cognitive tasks such as speech recognition, emotion processing, and spatial localization. Moreover, increasing physiological evidence points to the existence of direct connections between primary perceptual layers during audiovisual information processing. However, how these connectio

α-Linolenic acid alleviates ovalbumin-induced allergic rhinitis in mice and modulates GPR120-NF-κB signaling.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the upper respiratory tract mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE). Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential dietary omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, has been proposed to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties. However, research on the effects of ALA on AR and the underlying mechanisms remains limited. Therefore, we evaluated oral ALA intervention in an ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized AR mouse model. Nasal symptoms were recorded, and nasal mucosal pathology was evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin staining. Goblet cell hyperpl

Synergistic antimicrobial activity of alpha-linolenic acid in combination with tetracycline or florfenicol against multidrug-resistant Salmonella typhimurium.

Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen that can be transmitted from livestock and poultry to humans through the food chain. Due to the widespread use of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance Salmonella has become an important factor threatening food safety. Combining antibiotic and non-antibiotic agents is a promising approach to address the widespread emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens. In this study, we investigated the antibiotic resistance profile and molecular characterization of different serotypes of Salmonella isolated from large-scale egg farms using drug susceptibility testin

The Ratio of Linoleic and Linolenic Acid in the Pre-hibernation Diet Influences NFκB Signaling in Garden Dormice During Torpor.

The fatty acid composition of a pre-hibernation diet can influence the depth and duration of metabolic suppression achieved by hibernators. More specifically, a diet high in n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) relative to n-3 PUFAs is essential to maximize torpor expression. However, few studies have investigated how diets with different n-6/n-3 PUFA ratios change stress-inducible cell signaling. Garden dormice (Eliomys quercinus) were fed one of three diets designed with different ratios of n-6 PUFA linoleic acid (LA) and n-3 PUFA linolenic acid (ALA). Then, NFκB signaling was assessed in

Oral administration of whole dihomo-γ-linolenic acid-producing yeast suppresses allergic contact dermatitis in mice.

Dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA, C20: 3n-6) is known to have an anti-inflammatory activity, but its range of effects was not well studied because of its limited natural sources. We addressed these issues by constructing an yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain having a complete metabolic pathway for DGLA synthesis by introducing two desaturase and one elongase genes to convert endogenous oleic acid to DGLA. Taking advantage of well-known safety of S. cerevisiae, we previously investigated the efficacy of heat-killed whole DGLA-producing yeast cells on irritant contact dermatitis, and showed that

Isolation of alpha-linolenic acid from Sutherlandia frutescens and its inhibition of Mycobacterium tuberculosis' shikimate kinase enzyme.

BACKGROUND: Sutherlandia frutescens (L) R.Br. is one of traditional herbal medicines that formed the basis of primary health care systems since the earliest days and is still widely used. Sutherlandia is prescribed for people with tuberculosis (TB), but is still not known which compound(s) acts against M. tuberculosis and its mode of action. The aim of this study was to identify and isolate antimycobacterial compounds from S. frutescens extracts against shikimate kinase, a drug target for M. tuberculosis. METHODS: S. frutescens were dried, ground and extracted with ethanol, dichloromethane: m
