BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to investigate erythrocyte prooxidant-antioxidant balance in relation to liver and plasma lipid peroxidation in thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver cirrhosis in rats.
METHODS: Liver cirrhosis was produced by the administration of TAA (0.3 g/L of tap water) for a period of 3 months in rats. 43 patients and 20 healthy children, aged 11-15, were examined. Increased contents of primary, secondary, intermediary and final products of lipid peroxidation (LPO) in serum lipids as well as an intensified antioxidant activity were registered in children with erosive gastroduodenitis. Ventramine, when used in the treatment of erosive gastroduodenitis in children, arrests rapidly the clinical signs of the disease and normalizes LPO.

The effect of alimentary vitamin A deficiency on some parameters of lipid peroxidation (LPO) in young rats was studied. Levels of certain metabolites of peroxidation of lipids such as diene conjugates malonic dialdehyde, ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid and diketogulonic acid were compared in 39 cases of gastric ulcer, 25 patients with gastric cancer and 14 healthy subjects. Diene conjugates and malonic dialdehyde levels appeared to be increased in cases of gastric ulcer and cancer. This was matched by a decrease in ascorbic acid and dehydroascorbic acid levels. Ulcer patients revealed enhanced diketogulonic acid concentration.

Mepacrine at 50 microM completely protected vitamin E-deficient rat erythrocytes from peroxidative hemolysis induced by dialuric acid or reduced glutathione under the standard experimental conditions.
