The "Information Paradox" in crime prevention: how spatial context and age moderate the impact of safety advisories on residents' perception of safety.

BACKGROUND: Effective crime prevention communication is a cornerstone of urban public health and psychological well-being. However, the psychological impact of safety advisories on residents remains poorly understood. This study investigates the "Information Paradox," the phenomenon where crime prevention tips may inadvertently heighten fear rather than provide reassurance, and explores how spatial delivery channels and demographic factors moderate this relationship. METHODS: Drawing on a survey of residents in Nanjing, China, this study employed ordinal logistic regression (OLR) models to an

Shifting targets: typhoid's transformation from an environmental to a vaccine-preventable disease, 1940-2019.

160 years after the discovery of its waterborne transmission and 120 years after the development of the first-generation of vaccines, typhoid fever remains a major health threat globally. In this Historical Review, we use WHO's Institutional Repository for Information Sharing to examine changes in typhoid control policy from January, 1940, to December, 2019. We used a mixed-methods approach in the analysis of infection control priorities, combining semi-inductive thematic coding with historical analysis to show major thematic shifts in typhoid control policy, away from water, sanitation, and h

Limits to neoliberal reforms in the health sector: the case of pharmaceutical management in New Zealand.

In New Zealand in 1993, a pharmaceutical management agency (PHARMAC) was established during the height of neoliberal reforms in the health sector. The agency's relationship with pharmaceutical companies, patient lobby groups, and health professionals has been hostile at times, but despite this hostility, PHARMAC has remained substantially independent from political interference. This article draws on critical theory and Durkheimian perspectives to explain how such a strong regulatory organization was established during a time when attempts were made to reshape the health sector to conform to a

Addressing gambling harms by reducing the supply of electronic gambling machines: a comparative study of Italy and Finland.

BACKGROUND: Electronic gambling machines (EGMs) are amongst the most harmful forms of gambling. The high availability of EGMs is also linked … iscussions, but eventually in both countries reduction policies were less ambitious due to industry lobbying and state revenue interests. The reductions therefore do not appear to have been effective in reducing total consumption and the burden on public health.

Why did New Zealand's referendum to legalise recreational cannabis fail?

New Zealand recently held the world's first national referendum on cannabis legalisation involving a detailed bill to regulate retail sale and supply of cannabis for recreational (non-medical) adult use (i.e. the Cannabis Legalisation and Control Bill; CLCB). The referendum generated significant domestic debate and lobbying from both sides of the issue. The CLCB was narrowly defeated, with 48.4% voting to support versus 50.7% opposed. In this commentary, we discuss the referendum campaigns and other political and social factors that may have contributed to the result. Voting patterns appeared …

Outbreak of Pontiac fever due to Legionella anisa.

An outbreak of Pontiac fever occurred among 34 of 56 people attending conferences at a hotel in Santa Clara County, California, in 1988. Two groups had an acute febrile upper respiratory illness, with a mean attack rate of 82% and a mean incubation period of 56 hours. Symptoms resolved spontaneously within 5 days. Legionella anisa, which had not previously been associated with outbreaks of Pontiac fever or legionnaires' disease, was isolated from a decorative fountain in the hotel lobby. In addition, 5 of 8 pairs of serum samples from cases showed a more than fourfold rise in antibody titre to

Reproductive Rights without Resources or Recourse.

The U.S. Supreme Court declared procreation to be a fundamental right in the early twentieth century in a case involving Oklahoma's Habitual Criminal Sterilization Act, an act that permitted unconsented sterilization of individuals convicted of certain crimes. The right that the Court articulated in that case is a negative right: it requires that the government not place unjustified roadblocks in the way of people seeking to procreate, but it does not require the government to take positive steps to help people procreate if they wish to. I argue that a positive legal right is morally necessary

Report of the ACR's Economics Committee on Value-Based Payment Models.

A major outcome of the current health care reform process is the move away from unrestricted fee-for-service payment models toward those that are based on the delivery of better patient value and outcomes. The authors' purpose, therefore, is to critically evaluate and define those components of the overall imaging enterprise that deliver meaningful value to both patients and referrers and to determine how these components might be measured and quantified. These metrics might then be used to lobby providers and payers for sustainable payment solutions for radiologists and radiology services. Th

Body integrity identity disorder (BIID)--is the amputation of healthy limbs ethically justified?

The term body integrity identity disorder (BIID) describes the extremely rare phenomenon of persons who desire the amputation of one or more healthy limbs or who desire a paralysis. Some of these persons mutilate themselves; others ask surgeons for an amputation or for the transection of their spinal cord. Psychologists and physicians explain this phenomenon in quite different ways; but a successful psychotherapeutic or pharmaceutical therapy is not known. Lobbies of persons suffering from BIID explain the desire for amputation in analogy to the desire of transsexuals for surgical sex reassign
