[Lymphatic vessel imaging-Indications and clinical applications].

BACKGROUND: The armamentarium of lymphatic imaging techniques and treatment concepts available at specialized centers has significantly increased in recent years. The rarity and complexity of lymphatic vascular diseases presents the particular challenge of implementing these methods in a meaningful and targeted manner in patient care; however, there are currently no generally accepted diagnostic guidelines. OBJECTIVE: Which lymphatic imaging technique is useful in which clinical situations? MATERIAL AND METHODS: This article provides an overview of clinical and technical considerations that

Biomechanical control of lymphatic vessel physiology and functions.

The ever-growing research on lymphatic biology has clearly identified lymphatic vessels as key players that maintain human health through their functional roles in tissue fluid homeostasis, immunosurveillance, lipid metabolism and inflammation. It is therefore not surprising that the list of human diseases associated with lymphatic malfunctions has grown larger, including issues beyond lymphedema, a pathology traditionally associated with lymphatic drainage insufficiency. Thus, the discovery of factors and pathways that can promote optimal lymphatic functions may offer new therapeutic options.…

Lymphatic Vessel Thrombosis in a Patient with Secondary Lymphedema.

Lymphatic thrombosis is rarer than venous thrombosis. This case report describes a patient with secondary lymphedema, who was found to have … rom the probe, although the veins collapsed with pressure. We diagnosed the 2 hypoechoic circles as lymphatic vessels based on the location and longitudinal continuity. During LVA, we identified 2 parallel white vessels beneath the superficial fascia. After they were cut, white material was extruded. A diagnosis of lymphatic thrombosis was made, and we ligated the …

Regeneration of lymphatic vessels in the ear of the guinea pig.

The regenerative capacity of injured lymphatic trunks was compared to that of lymphatic capillaries following physical and chemical injuries using the techniques of micro-injection. Some transected lymphatic trunks regenerate whereas lymphatic trunks having 2 mm segments excised did not regenerate. Flow of lymph was diverted to collateral vessels. In contrast to lymphatic trunks, lymphatic capillaries showed remarkable regenerative capacity following both physical and chemical injuries.

[A case of lymphatic vessel abnormality with chylous pneumonia].

Chylous pneumonia is a rare respiratory disease. The main clinical manifestation is coughing up chylous sputum with a variety of causes which can be clarified by lymphangiography. The lack of understanding of the disease, and infrequent lymphangiography have led to a high rate of misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis. Here, we reported a case of bronchial lymphatic fistula caused by lymphatic abnormality that led to the diagnosis and treatment of chylous pneumonia, with the aim of improving clinicians' understanding of this disease.

Lymphatic vessel hypertrophy in inflamed human tonsils.

The structural and molecular properties of the human tonsil lymphatic microvascular system are important to understand as these features likely contribute to fluid balance, immunity, and tumor metastasis. The tonsil is a unique lymphoid organ in that it is in intimate contact with the contents of the upper aerodigestive tract and that there are no identifiable afferent lymphatics. Conventional immunofluorescence microscopy demonstrated a remarkable degree of lymphatic vessel architecture within the tonsil; LYVE-1-positive lymphatic vessels were detected around each germinal center and in the m…

Lymphatic vessels in the broad ligament of the uterus in swine.

The lymphatics of the broad ligament were depicted in 24 pigs by multiple interstitial injections of latex into the ovary and subserosa of the mesometrial margin of the uterine horn. Two morphologically different networks of lymphatics emanating from the uterus and ovary were established. Ovarian lymphatics leave the hilus, invariably enter the parovarian plexus, lie superficially under the perimetrium of the mesovarium, and run a parallel course closely intertwined with the blood vessels in this region. Some lymphatics are thus located close to the branches of the ovarian artery and the utero

Clinical value of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance lymphatic vessel imaging for precise localization of lymphatic vessels in patients with lymphaticovenous anastomosis.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance lymphangiography (MRL) is crucial for preoperative localization of lymphatic vessels for lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA), improving surgical success and treating limb lymphoedema. This study was performed to investigate the accuracy of indocyanine green (ICG) lymphography assisted by contrast-enhanced MRL (CE-MRL) in microsurgical incision planning and to evaluate the efficacy of LVA. METHODS: From August 2023 to October 2024, 35 patients with secondary upper or lower extremity lymphoedema who underwent LVA were selected. All patients underwent preoperative I…

Supermicrosurgical deep lymphatic vessel-to-venous anastomosis for a breast cancer-related arm lymphedema with severe sclerosis of superficial lymphatic vessels.

Lymphatic supermicrosurgery or supermicrosurgical lymphaticovenular anastomosis (LVA) is becoming popular for the treatment of compression-refractory upper extremity lymphedema (UEL) with its effectiveness and minimally invasiveness. In conventional LVA, superficial lymphatic vessels are used for anastomosis, but its treatment efficacy would be minimum when superficial lymphatic vessels are severely sclerotic. Theoretically, deep lymphatic vessels can be used for LVA, but no clinical case has been reported regarding deep lymphatic vessel-to-venous anastomosis (D-LVA). We report a breast cancer…

Usefulness of subtraction thermography in the evaluation of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels in the dental pulp.

Purpose: Caries or iatrogenic thermal trauma of the teeth have a significant impact on the dental pulp structure connected with stimulation of angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis. Therefore, the aim of the study was to identify the difference in the rate of heat dissipation by vessels present in the dental pulp. Methods: Freshly extracted healthy (n = 10) and carious (n = 14) molars and premolars were cut on a diamond saw and subjected to active thermographic examination and then subjected to lymphoscintigraphy and X-ray examination. The tooth samples were heated uniformly to 40 ± 0.5 °C. A the

Identification of lymphatic vessels and prognostic value of lymphatic microvessel density in lesions of the uterine cervix.

Incomplete characterization of the uterine cervix cancer from molecular point of view represents the main problem for the use of a proper therapy in this disease. Few data are available about D2-40 expression in lymphatic endothelial cells and also in tumor cells from uterine cervix cancer. The aim of the present work was to study the involvement of lymphatics in prognosis and tumor progression of the uterine cervix lesions. We used D2-40 immunostaining to highlight lymphatic vessels from squamous cell metaplasia (n=17), cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (n=11), carcinoma in situ (n=3), micro…

Optic nerve cerebrospinal fluid drainage via lymphatic vessels in its sheath.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounding the optic nerve is essential for nutrient transport, waste removal, and optic nerve function. Optic disc edema in astronauts during long-duration spaceflight-Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS)-may result from impaired optic nerve CSF drainage, but the drainage pathway remains unclear. Given that the optic nerve sheath is an extension of the cranial meninges, we hypothesized that its CSF drains via lymphatic vessels rather than refluxing into the cranium. We assessed the pressure relationship between intracranial and optic nerve CSF and tra…

Regression of mature lymphatic vessels in the cornea by photodynamic therapy.

BACKGROUND: Corneal (lymph) angiogenesis is a predominant risk-factor for immune rejection after transplantation. Techniques to regress pre-existing pathological corneal lymphatic vessels prior to transplantation are missing so far. Therefore we analysed the possibility to regress corneal lymphatic vessels by photodynamic therapy (PDT), after intrastromal verteporfin injection. METHODS: Combined hemangiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis was induced in female BALB/c mice using the murine model of suture-induced inflammatory neovascularisation. Thereafter, the treatment group received an intrastrom…

Experimental ileitis alters prostaglandin biosynthesis in mesenteric lymphatic and blood vessels.

Prostaglandins are important mediators responsible for many changes that occur during the inflammatory response. Specifically, in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), prostaglandins are key players in maintenance of blood flow and mucosal defense. In blood vessels, prostaglandins modulate and inhibit transmigration. In lymphatic vessels, on the other hand, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and prostacyclin (PGI2) have been shown to potently inhibit lymphatic contractility. Inhibition of lymphatic contractility could impair proper tissue fluid drainage during inflammation, consequently leading to the submuc…

Invasion of lymphatic vessels into the eye after open globe injuries.

PURPOSE: We analyzed whether lymphatic vessels can be detected in eyes enucleated after an open globe injury. METHODS: The presence of lymphatic vessels was analyzed immunohistochemically using podoplanin as a specific lymphatic endothelial marker in 21 globes that had been enucleated after open globe injury. The localization of pathologic lymphatic vessels (within the eye wall or inside the eye) was correlated with the mechanism of trauma, anatomic site of perforation or rupture, and time interval between trauma and enucleation. RESULTS: Pathologic lymphatic vessels were detected in 15 of 2…

Functional anatomy of lymphatic vessels under the aspect of tumor invasion.

In the human body there are about 800 lymph nodes, of which 300 are located in the head and neck area. The lymphatic system begins with initial finger-shaped lymphatic vessels consisting of valveless lymphatic capillaries and precollectors with valves. The precollectors become collectors and transport the lymph to the so-called lymph stems. These vessels lead into the right and left lymphatic duct and into the jugular trunk of the head and neck region. At the end they join into the blood circulation at the junction point of the jugular and subclavian veins. On the basis of the morphology of th…

The Interplay between Meningeal Lymphatic Vessels and Neuroinflammation in Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Meningeal lymphatic vessels (MLVs) are essential for the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid, macromolecules, and immune cells in the central nervous system. They play critical roles in modulating neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative diseases. Dysfunctional MLVs have been demonstrated to increase neuroinflammation by horizontally blocking the drainage of neurotoxic proteins to the peripheral lymph nodes. Conversely, MLVs protect against neuroinflammation by preventing immune cells from becoming fully encephalitogenic. Furthermore, evidence suggests that neuroinflammation affects the structure an…
