Synovial fluid (SF) from rheumatoid arthritis patients (RA) and culture-supernatants of synovial tissue (ST) cells from RA patients and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) patients were examined for their ability to promote B cell growth. Lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells generated by cultivation of C57BL/6 mouse spleen cells in the presence of recombinant interleukin-2 were transferred into natural killer (NK) cell-deficient suckling mouse recipients. These mice were then challenged with either murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) or lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCMV) and sacrificed 3 days later. No interleukin 2 infusions were given. A phase II trial using interleukin-2 (IL2) and lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells was carried out in an attempt to treat children with end-stage neuroblastoma. Fifteen patients (median age, 7 years) were enrolled in the study. Twelve were in relapse after massive chemotherapy and autologous bone marrow transplantation (ABMT), and three had a primary refractory disease after conventional chemotherapy. Fifty-two amoebic liver abscess cases were assessed for the release of lymphokines (LMIF) using detergent dissected membrane proteins (DDMP) of axenic Entamoeba histolytica (NIH:200) obtained with sodium deoxycholate treatment.
