Spinach was evaluated for its bioavailability of magnesium in the experiment with magnesium-deficient rats. The effect of oxalic acid on absorption of dietary magnesium was also examined in the same experiment. After there were significant differences in the body weight of the rats between the control group and the magnesium-deficient group, and after the number of dead rats increased, the magnesium-deficient rats were divided into six groups. They were pair-fed for 8 days on the magnesium-deficient diet, magnesium-deficient diet supplemented with raw powdered spinach (R-sp), boiled powdered s…

BACKGROUND: The vitamins and minerals that are deficient in the daily diet of a normal adult remain unknown. To answer this question, we conducted a population survey focusing on the relationship between dietary magnesium intake and serum magnesium level.
METHODS: The subjects were 62 individuals from Fukui Prefecture who participated in the 1998 National Nutrition Survey. The survey investigated the physical status, nutritional status, and dietary data of the subjects. Holidays and special occasions were avoided, and a day when people are most likely to be on an ordinary diet was selected as…

In 26 top sportsmen (volleyball players, rower) aged 15-18 years the serum magnesium level and urinary Mg excretion before and after oral administration of 5 g Mg lactate was assessed (oral magnesium load test). In 11 sportsmen (42.3%) a low percentage of excretion of administered Mg was found, suggesting magnesium deficiency, irrespective of the basal serum Mg levels. After subsequent 10-day Mg supplementation 6 volleyball players responded by a markedly lower retention after an identical Mg load, again without marked changes of the serum Mg level. The authors consider the magnesium load test…

Urinary excretion of magnesium, calcium, and phosphate was measured in 20 preeclamptic pregnant women treated with intravenous magnesium sulfate. Blood levels of these substances, as well as of parathyroid hormone and calcitonin, were also measured. Urinary magnesium excretion increased 20-fold during magnesium sulfate infusion. Seventy-five percent of the infused magnesium was excreted during the infusion, and 90% within 24 hours after treatment. Urinary calcium concentration increased 4.5-fold during magnesium sulfate infusion, and the urinary calcium excretion rate was 3 times that observed…

Migraine is a widespread and intricate neurological condition that involves various factors and is marked by recurring headache episodes. Migraine is among the ten neurological conditions accounting for the greatest disability in the whole population, the leading cause of disability for children and adolescents aged 5-19 years, and the second cause of disability for adults aged 20-59 years. Magnesium deficiency is also a very common condition resulting from diverse reasons, including insufficient dietary consumption or increased loss through the gastrointestinal or renal system. Accumulated ev…

In terms of antinociceptive action, the main mode of action of magnesium involves its antagonist action at the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, which prevents central sensitization and attenuates preexisting pain hypersensitivity. Given the pivotal function of NMDA receptors in pain transduction, magnesium has been investigated in a variety of pain conditions. The oral and parenteral administration of magnesium via the intravenous, intrathecal, or epidural route may alleviate pain and perioperative anesthetic and analgesic requirements. These beneficial effects of magnesium therapy have a…

Several drugs including diuretics and proton-pump inhibitors can cause magnesium loss and hypomagnesemia. Magnesium and drugs use the same transport and metabolism pathways in the body for their intestinal absorption, metabolism, and elimination. This means that when one or more drug is taken, there is always a potential risk of interaction with the magnesium status. Consequently the action of a drug may be adversely affected by magnesium (e.g., magnesium, calcium, and zinc can interfere with the gastrointestinal absorption of tetracycline antibiotics) and simultaneously the physiological func…

Magnesium deficiency is prevalent in women of childbearing age in both developing and developed countries. The need for magnesium increases during pregnancy, and the majority of pregnant women likely do not meet this increased need. Magnesium deficiency or insufficiency during pregnancy may pose a health risk for both the mother and the newborn, with implications that may extend into adulthood of the offspring. The measurement of serum magnesium is the most widely used method for determining magnesium levels, but it has significant limitations that have both hindered the assessment of deficien…

The pathophysiological responses to experimental magnesium deficiency are considered to result from mild inflammation and oxidative stress in various tissues. It is not clear whether magnesium deficiency solely induces liver diseases. However, magnesium deficiency is considered as a potential risk factor for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) because magnesium deficiency is associated with type 2 diabetes that are closely related to the pathogenesis of NAFLD. Further, inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress play important roles in the progression to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. The …

Blood levels of total Mg, ionized Mg and intracellular ionized Mg of platelet were lowered in the 2nd trimester of gestation and thereafter. Urinary excretion of Mg does not change during the whole period of pregnancy. According to our results of animal experiments, intestinal absorption of Mg does not increase during pregnancy compared with non-pregnant state. These data suggest pregnant women tend to become magnesium deficiency. This is reflected in the fact that Mg metabolic parameters of pregnant women with preeclampsia are relatively reduced compared with those of healthy gravidae. In the…

Magnesium is a critical physiological ion, and magnesium deficiency might contribute to the development of pre-eclampsia, to impaired neonatal development and to metabolic problems extending into adult life. Pharmacologically, magnesium is a calcium antagonist with substantial vasodilator properties but without myocardial depression. Cardiac output usually increases following magnesium administration, compensating for the vasodilatation and minimising hypotension. Neurologically, the inhibition of calcium channels and antagonism of the N-methyl-d-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptor raises the possib…

Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is essential to good health. Approximately 50% of total body magnesium is found in bone. The other half is found predominantly inside cells of body tissues and organs. Only 1% of magnesium is found in blood. Studies performed on the importance of magnesium and the medical conditions that may arise from inadequate magnesium in the body have increased the interest of magnesium supplementation. Magnesium, an important electrolyte needed for proper muscle, nerve, and enzyme function, is also used as a supplement to relieve premenstrual …

Magnesium status has a direct effect upon the relaxation capability of vascular smooth muscle cells and the regulation of the cellular placement of other cations important to blood pressure - cellular sodium:potassium (Na:K) ratio and intracellular calcium (iCa(2+)). As a result, nutritional magnesium has both direct and indirect impacts on the regulation of blood pressure and therefore on the occurrence of hypertension. Hypertension occurs when cellular Na:K ratios become too high, a consequence of a high sodium, low potassium diet or, indirectly, through a magnesium deficient state which cau…

The aim of this article is to clarify the relationships between aging or age-related diseases and magnesium (Mg). The mutation of mitochondrial DNA can occur in both aging and Mg deficiency, resulting in peroxidation, intracellular Ca(2+) accumulation and apoptosis. The capability against peroxidation decreases in aging and Mg deficiency. DNA polymerase I, RNA polimerase and DNA helicase require Mg for their activities. Under Mg deficiency the replication, transcription and translation of DNA become erroneous. The dysfunctions of vascular endothelial cell occur in aging and Mg deficiency. In c…

A summary of new findings regarding alterations of magnesium (Mg2+) and phosphorus (P) metabolism are reviewed for the clinician caring for patients in general wards. Alterations in serum concentrations of Mg2+ and P are frequently observed in acute or very ill patients in emergency rooms or intensive-care areas. A significant proportion of these alterations are iatrogenic. Most of the symptoms related are non-specific, and usually they are associated with changes in concentration of other ions. The need to measure Mg2+ and P routinely and to define better the real abnormal values is stressed.…
