OBJECTIVE: Neuro-Behcet's disease (NBD) is one of the most serious complications of Behcet's disease (BD). Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) has been proved to be useful in detecting neuro-metabolic abnormalities in various diseases affecting the brain. In this study, we attempted to characterize the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in Korean patients with NBD and then examined the usefulness of 1HMRS in evaluating the MRI-negative brain area of NBD patients.
METHODS: We performed brain MRI in 18 BD patients with neurologic symptoms and signs. Seven NBD patients without

PURPOSE: To study metabolic and hemodynamic correlates of photic stimulation-triggered discharges.
METHODS: Simultaneous EEG, functional MRI (tMRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) were performed in nine patients with photosensitive epilepsy and in 12 normal subjects.
RESULTS: Prominent visual cortex activation was seen in all normal subjects and patients, and no tMRI-registered hemodynamic abnormalities were correlated with the brief photoparoxysmal spike-wave activity evoked in the photosensitive patients. However, irrespective of the presence of a spike-wave response to the photi

In vivo pelvic imaging of 39 women and in vitro relaxation time measurements of four uterine specimens were performed using an ultra low field (0.02 T) MRI unit. Average T1 times measured in vitro at 37 degrees C for the myometrium and endometrium were 206 ms (SD 47 ms) and 389 ms (SD 21 ms), respectively. Corresponding T2 times were 95 ms (SD 20 ms) and 167 ms (SD 13 ms). The proton relaxation of almost all myometrial specimens proved to be biexponential, but of all endometrial specimens was monoexponential. Contrast measurements between endometrium versus myometrium and myometrium versus the

Among various theranostic strategies, magnetic particle imaging-guided magnetic hyperthermia therapy (MPI-MHT) stands out for its ability to provide real-time, quantitative imaging alongside controlled tumor ablation. Nevertheless, its advancement is hindered by the conflicting requirements for dynamic magnetization of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), which are crucial for optimizing both the MPI signal and the efficacy of MHT. This complexity makes it challenging to enhance performance synergistically within a single agent. Herein, we present an innovative site-selective doping strategy using t

Compensated magnets are of increasing interest for both fundamental research and applications, with their net-zero magnetization leading to ultrafast dynamics and robust order. To understand and control this order, nanoscale mapping of local domain structures is necessary. One of the main routes to mapping antiferromagnetic order is x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD), which probes the local orientation of the Néel vector. However, XMLD imaging typically suffers from weak contrast and has mainly been limited to surface-sensitive techniques. Here, we harness coherent diffractive imaging to m

Chromium oxychloride is a van der Waals magnet with intrinsic competing exchange interactions, including a strong antiferromagnetic one, source of a very rich magnetic phase diagram, with ferrimagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and canted states, up to high magnetic fields. We investigate the sequence of these magnetic phases in thin layers of CrOCl using magneto-Raman scattering spectroscopy. We identify phases whose magnetic order is commensurate with the atomic lattice, and find signatures of strong magneto-striction, presumably of exchange origin. The coupling of the spin and atomic degrees of f

Chemical reactions within living systems are made possible by bioorthogonal catalysis without interfering with regular biological processes. However, under physiological conditions, many transition-metal catalysts become toxic or unstable. By enhancing stability, safeguarding the catalyst, and enabling regulated, magnetically controlled activation and directed delivery to particular locations, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) overcome these difficulties. Reliable reactions like palladium-mediated decaging and in situ prodrug activation are supported by their adjustable cores and versatile organic

The growing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has driven increasing interest in non-chemical antibacterial strategies that rely on physical mechanisms rather than biochemical toxicity. However, the rational construction of nanomaterials that can efficiently convert external stimuli into localized mechanical forces at bio-interfaces, while maintaining structural stability and biocompatibility, remains a major challenge. Here, we report a magnetic-field-assisted interfacial co-assembly and epitaxial growth strategy to construct a one-dimensional hierarchical magnetic nanochain with a r

Magnetic particles have significant potential as novel theranostics due to the relative ease of surface modification for targeting molecules or regions of diseased tissues, coupled with remote in vivo manipulation using an exogenous magnetic field. Employing magnetic particles within the eye is hindered by the lack of safety studies. In particular, our lab has developed peptide-conjugated iron-oxide magnetic particles that target and liberate pseudoexfoliation materials from anterior lens capsules under a rotating magnetic field. Further application of such a mode of therapy may hold the key t

Magnetic soft actuators enable untethered, contact-free actuation yet they are fundamentally limited by the difficulty of programming complex, three-dimensional (3D), spatially non-uniform magnetic profiles. Here, we introduce a four-dimensional (4D) printing-enabled magnetic programming strategy that overcomes this challenge by magnetizing magnetically active liquid crystal elastomers (MLCEs) in thermally actuated target states. Digitally prescribed director architectures define deterministic 3D deformations at elevated temperature, which serve as intrinsic programming templates during magnet

Two-dimensional (2D) rare-earth-based square lattice (SL) quantum magnets provide a pathway to achieve distinctive ground states characterized by unusual excitations. We investigate the magnetic, heat capacity, structural, and electronic properties of a magnetic system Bi2ErO4Cl. This compound features a structurally ideal 2D SL composed of Er3+rare-earth magnetic ions. The single-phase polycrystalline sample was synthesized using hydrothermal, followed by a vacuum-sealed tube technique. The analysis of heat capacity and magnetic data indicates that the Er3+ion adopts aJeff=12state at low temp

Magnetic nanoparticles have been at the center of biomedical research for decades, primarily for their applications in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic particle imaging (MPI). Superparamagnetic particles, typically based on iron oxide crystals, are effective in both modalities, although each requires distinct magnetic properties for optimal performance. We investigated the performance of nanoparticles based on a nickel-substituted ferrite core and compared them to standard maghemite iron oxide nanoparticles. We synthesized γ-Fe2O3 and Ni x Fe2-x O3 nanoparticles and coated them wi

By analogy with the selection rule governing the uniaxial magnetism of magnetic insulators, we found that the uniaxial magnetism of permanent magnets (i.e., itinerant or metallic ferromagnets) requires the presence of a strong polarization (i.e., unequal populations of the two members constituting a pair) in one of the three rotationally degenerate pairs, (xz2, yz2), [xyz, (x2 - y2)z], and [x(x2 - 3y2), y(y2 - 3x2)], of the f-bands in rare-earth (RE)-based ones, and in one of the two rotationally degenerate pairs, (xz, yz) and (xy, x2 - y2), of the d-bands in RE-free ones. This requirement was

Spin obit torque (SOT) driven magnetization switching has been used widely for encoding consumption-efficient memory and logic. However, symmetry breaking under a magnetic field is required to realize the deterministic switching in synthetic antiferromagnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), which limits their potential applications. Herein, we report all electric-controlled magnetization switching in the antiferromagnetic Co/Ir/Co trilayers with vertical magnetic imbalance. Besides, the switching polarity could be reversed by optimizing the Ir thickness. By using the polarized neu

Drug delivery strategies aim to maximize a drug's therapeutic efficiency by increasing the drug's concentration at the target site while minimizing delivery to off-target tissues. There is a great deal of interest in using magnetic nanoparticles in combination with applied magnetic fields to selectively control drug accumulation and release in target tissue while minimizing effects on other tissues. In this study, a magnetic targeted drug delivery system based on waterborne polyurethane nanomicelles was prepared by encapsulating hydrophobic doxorubicin (DOX, model drug) and hydrophobic oleic a

Current induced spin-orbit torques driven by the conventional spin Hall effect are widely used to manipulate the magnetization. This approach, however, is nondeterministic and inefficient for the switching of magnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy that are demanded by the high-density magnetic storage and memory devices. Here, we demonstrate that this limitation can be overcome by exploiting a magnetic spin Hall effect in noncollinear antiferromagnets, such as Mn3Sn. The magnetic group symmetry of Mn3Sn allows generation of the out-of-plane spin current carrying spin polarization colli

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) have emerged as non-invasive diagnostic techniques for the diagnosis of pancreatic and pancreatic duct disorders in humans. The number of studies focused on MR and MRCP for pancreatic disease in small animals is very limited. MR has been described for the evaluation of insulinoma in dogs and to investigate pancreatitis in cats. The studies were based on a standard protocol with T2 weighted (w) fast recovery fast spin-echo (FRFSE) with and without fat suppression, T1w FSE pre-contrast and T1w FSE post-contrast with and with

Magnetically levitated vibration sensors possess wide frequency response ranges and high sensitivity. Compared with springs and cantilevers, the levitated magnet suffers no mechanical abrasion, allowing minimized mechanical fatigue after prolonged exposure to vibration. However, magnetic levitated sensors are mostly based on fully rigid components, which are difficult to match the soft and curvilinear surface of the biological tissues and machines. Here, an innovative vibration sensor based on magnetic levitation has been developed. The proposed sensor contains two parallel magnetic membranes,

Primary bronchial cancer accounts for almost 20% of all cancer death worldwide. One of the emerging techniques with tremendous power for lung cancer therapy is magnetic aerosol drug targeting (MADT). The use of a permanent magnet for effective drug delivery in a desired location throughout the lung requires extensive optimization, but it has not been addressed yet. In the present study, the possibility of using a permanent magnet for trapping the particles on a lung tumor is evaluated numerically in the Weibel's model from G0 to G3. The effect of different parameters is considered on the effic
