Fructose malabsorption and fructan malabsorption are associated in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Food malabsorption and intolerance is implicated in gastrointestinal symptoms among patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Key triggers include fructose and fructan. Prior studies examined fructose and fructan malabsorption separately in IBS patients. None have concurrently assessed both within the same patient group. We aimed to investigate the association between fructose and fructan malabsorption in the same patients with IBS using hydrogen breath testing (HBT). METHODS: We retrospectively identified patients with IBS who underwent fructose and fructan HBTs and abstracte

Overview and diagnosis of malabsorption syndrome.

"Malabsorption" syndrome is the term widely used to describe the end result of either impaired breakdown of nutrients (maldigestion) or defective mucosal uptake and transport of adequately digested nutrients (true malabsorption). The latter may affect a broad range of nutrients (ie, panmalabsorption) or individual nutrients or groups of nutrients (ie, specific malabsorption). This review discusses the etiology and pathophysiology of malabsorption. A diagnostic approach to malabsorption is proposed. Other articles review specific disorders such as celiac disease, bacterial overgrowth, and chron

Malabsorption syndrome in patients with cryptosporidiosis.

Out of 130 patients presenting with gastroenteritis, oocysts of Cryptosporidium species were detected in the faecal samples of 10 persons (7.69%). The prevalence of the parasite was higher among rural inhabitants (11.47%) than city dwellers (4.35%), particularly in the young age. The parasite lead to impairment of the intestinal absorptive function as indicated by the significant change in the fat in stools and the decreased excretion of D-xylose.

Postinfective malabsorption: a sprue syndrome.

Thirteen cases are described of temporary malabsorption in adults presenting after an episode of apparent infective enteritis. Clinical features included diarrohea, anorexia, and weight loss. Investigations indicated diffuse impairment of function in the small bowel, including the ileum, with well-preserved mucosal morphology in the upper jejunum and a tendency to rapid folate depletion. Spontaneous recovery usually occurred within weeks but two cases ran a more prolonged and severe course. The clinical features of this syndrome are those of tropical sprue, but the outcome of the illness is pro

Dietary management of the malabsorption syndrome.

The purpose of this report is to emphasize the importance of strict dietary control of patients suffering from the malabsorption syndrome and to announce the availability of a gluten-free bread-substitute, called "Unimix", from the Scientific Development Committee, Room 14, Medical Building, University of Toronto. Science a gluten-free diet is difficult to follow because of the widespread use of wheat flour and other cereals in the production of many common foods, a suggested gluten-free meal pattern is presented, which conforms with Canada's Food Guide and permits a number of choices of menu
