Colonic malakoplakia is an uncommon granulomatous development of cells resulting from the impaired capacity of the mononuclear cells to eliminate the phagocytosed bacteria, and in rare cases it can also affect the gastrointestinal tract. We report the case of a 78-year-old female patient that was admitted to hospital by The Emergency Department with the diagnosis of bowel obstruction, confirmed by the clinical and paraclinical investigations. We decided to surgically manage the case for suspicious symptomatic colonic neoplasm. The histological examination of the surgical specimens revealed col

CASE: A 66-year-old woman with polymyositis and recurrent urinary tract infections presented with lumbar pain and progressive lower extremity neuropathy. Imaging showed lytic destruction of the vertebral bone from L2 to L4 with extension into adjacent musculature. Histological examination demonstrated Michaelis-Gutmann bodies consistent with malakoplakia. The patient underwent revision T12-sacrum posterior fusion, L2-5 laminectomy, and anterior L3-4 corpectomy, followed by L2-4 anterior stabilization and a 6-week course of ceftriaxone. At 3 months postoperatively, she was asymptomatic without

During elective cholecystectomy due to cholelithiasis and chronic cholecystitis of a 76-year old male patient, a nodular soft tumor of 8 cm. in diameter was found in the caudal region of the pancreas. The tumor was suspected for malignancy during surgery. However, during routine microscopical examination of the biopsy specimen, a large number of Michaelis-Guttman bodies were found, thus establishing the diagnosis of classical malakoplakia.

This case report is of a 10-year-old female who presented with complaints of blood in her stool and colicky abdominal pain for the last 1.5 years. Biopsy samples from the rectum and left-sided colon were taken during a colonoscopy, revealing numerous histiocytes having calcified bodies (Michaelis-Gutmann bodies). Diagnosis of Malakoplakia was confirmed with no evidence of dysplasia, malignancy, or granuloma.

INTRODUCTION: Malakoplakia is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder, predominantly affecting the urinary tract. In the head and neck region, it is very rare and may confuse the clinicians during investigations, as features may mimic malignancy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report a case of malakoplakia involving the parotid gland and review of the reported cases of malakoplakia in head and neck region.
RESULTS: Histologically, this is the first classic case report of malakoplakia involving the parotid gland in the world literature. A total of 49 cases have been reported in the head and neck regi

Malakoplakia is a rare chronic inflammatory disease, usually involving the urogenital tract. We report a patient who presented with a psoas abscess, and later developed colocutaneous fistula at the site of abscess drainage and multiple spontaneous fistulae away from the site of incision. Histology of the resected specimen showed Michaelis-Gutmann bodies, which are diagnostic of malakoplakia.

Malakoplakia is a rare chronic inflammatory condition that most commonly involves the urogenital tract. Cutaneous malakoplakia is extremely rare and many patients diagnosed with skin involvement are immunosuppressed. While the clinical presentation of cutaneous malakoplakia is variable, the histopathologic features are quite distinct and include sheets of closely packed dermal histiocytes with foamy-appearing cytoplasm and Michaelis-Gutmann bodies that are positive with certain immunohistochemical stains. While the exact pathogenesis of malakoplakia is unknown, it has been associated with cert

Malakoplakia, a rare acquired granulomatous disease, affects many systems, including the urogenital tract. The literature describes malakoplakia of different viscera, and satisfactory results have been obtained after treatment. We reported a 48-year-old patient with diabetes who received multiple treatments in our hospital for bladder malakoplakia near the ureteral orifice. Despite aggressive treatment, the patient had recurrent bladder malakoplakia and even developed right ureteral orifice stenosis, which resulted in urinary obstruction and hydronephrosis. We believe that malakoplakia in the

Malakoplakia is an unusual chronic inflammatory disease that was first discovered in the urinary bladder but has subsequently been described in other sites. Characteristic gross and microscopic features of the lesions have been well described. The diagnosis of this tumor-like lesion can only be established by pathologic examination of the involved tissue. A case of prostatic malakoplakia with characteristic gross and microscopic features is reported in a 59-year-old man who presented with urinary frequency and a diminished urinary stream. Clinically the condition mimicked carcinoma of the pros

Malakoplakia is a rare disease. Clinical presentation is non-specific, making its diagnosis an incidental finding on histopathological analysis. The aim of this case report is to describe a patient diagnosed with colon, renal and soft tissue malacoplakia mimicking a locally advanced colorectal cancer. A 75-year-old man was admitted due to intense abdominal pain. No relevant findings at the physical examination. Computed tomography showed parietal thickening of the descending colon with left kidney, iliopsoas muscle and retroperitoneum involvement. An elevated blood serum creatinine, elevated g…

We report a case of malakoplakia of the epiglottis in a 45-year-old female patient. Only three cases of laryngeal malakoplakia have been reported in the world literature, one of which was associated with tracheal malakoplakia. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of isolated malakoplakia of the epiglottis. Malakoplakia, a rare granulomatous lesion, has been seen more frequently in the urinary tract. Other organs like the genito-urinary tract, testis, epididymis, lymph nodes, middle ear, nasopharynx, tonsil and retroperitoneal tissue have been also involved though less frequently.

Xanthogranulomatous inflammation is an ubiquitous process that is most commonly observed in the kidney but may be observed in other organs. We report a case of xanthogranulomatous inflammation occurring in an enlarged parotid gland of a 65-year-old man as a result of salivary duct obstruction from sialolithiasis. We discuss the common histologic features and probably common aetiology of several inflammatory xanthograulomatous processes including malakoplakia.

Two cases of malakoplakia of the testis are presented. Malakoplakia (soft plaque) is an uncommon chronic inflammatory condition of granulomatous type, the common denominator of which would appear to be an altered reactivity of macrophages. Its hallmark is the presence of Michaelis-Guttman bodies. Until the late 1950s, when a case involving the testis was described, the condition was thought to involve only the mucosae of the bladder, ureters, and renal pelvis. The most recent review of malakoplakia of the testis included only 10 known cases.

Typhoid Vi vaccines have been shown to be efficacious in children living in endemic regions; however, a widely accepted correlate of protection remains to be established. We applied a systems serology approach to identify Vi-specific serological correlates of protection using samples obtained from participants enrolled in an experimental controlled human infection study. Participants were vaccinated with Vi-tetanus toxoid conjugate (Vi-TT) or unconjugated Vi-polysaccharide (Vi-PS) vaccines and were subsequently challenged with Salmonella Typhi bacteria. Multivariate analyses identified distinc

Malakoplakia presenting in the head and neck is very rare. We present a case of an inflammatory mass in the neck, clinically mimicking actinomycosis in a 67-year-old man. Repeated culture of E. coli and histological and electron microscopic examination of biopsy material showed an infiltration of granular macrophages and intracellular gram negative bacilli, but no classical Michaelis-Gutmann bodies. The clinical and pathological findings and criteria for the diagnosis of malakoplakia are discussed.

Malakoplakia in the gastrointestinal tract is rare in healthy young people without underlying disease. Sufficient tissue is required for accurate diagnosis. We describe a malakoplakia that developed in a healthy young woman and was treated by endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). A 40-year-old woman with a history of taking oral contraceptives until one year earlier was referred to our hospital with anal bleeding and constipation. A colonoscopy carried out at our another hospital 18 months earlier disclosed no abnormal findings. Colonoscopy at presentation revealed a yellowish-white tumor, 5 mm
