Mandibular fractures in children: long term results.

Mandibular fractures in children treated in our department between March 1994 and January 2001 were retrospectively studied. Age, sex, type of fracture, etiology and evolution after treatment, functional mobility and maximal mouth opening were recorded. The population consisted of 19 patients who sustained 30 fractures. The patients ages ranged from 1.5 to 18 years. The mean time of follow up was 28 months. The male to female ratio was 1.7:1. Traffic and bicycle accidents were the main causes of the fractures. The condyle was involved in 16% of the cases, the subcondylar region in 28%. Fractur…

[Fractures of the mandibular condyle. Therapeutic controversies].

The condylar mandibular fractures are important because its incidence, possible complications and controversial treatment. The treatment of condylar fractures has generated more controversy and discussion than any other in the field of maxillofacial trauma. The main goal of treatment is restoration of function and not anatomic restoration of parts. Despite several clinical and anatomical studies still lack consensus regarding the best method of treatment. This review article focus on the controversy that surrounds treatment of the condylar fractures, trying to supply consensus about questions …

Lag screw fixation of mandibular angle fractures.

This article presents a technique of applying lag screws for treating fractures of the mandibular angle. A review of 30 patients who had lag screws placed to treat such fractures showed that it is an extremely useful, but technique-sensitive, method of providing rigid internal fixation. The advantages and complications of this technique over bone-plate fixation are discussed.

Mandibular fractures in an urban trauma center.

The hospital records of 307 patients sustaining mandibular fractures between 1980 and 1984 were reviewed. The patient population consisted of 79% males, with precipitating events usually being fist fights (47%) and assaults with a blunt object (18%). The most common fracture involved the body (30%), followed by the angle (21%) and the condyles (19%). Intermaxillary fixation (IMF) was the preferred method of treatment (42%); however, a large number of patients were treated by internal fixation (31%) or external stabilization (11%). Despite the large number with internal fixation procedures, the…

The influence of the mandibular gonial angle on the occurrence of mandibular angle fracture.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Angle fractures represent the largest percentage of mandibular fractures. They pose as a unique entity because of their codependent morphological dynamic factors, rendering the understanding of the mechanism, and treatment challenging. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between the mandibular gonial angle and the risk of mandibular angle fracture while highlighting its clinical relevance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of radiographs of patients treated for mandibular fractures was done. The factors studied were as follows: the presence of a…

[Is miniplate osteosynthesis for combined mandibular body and bilateral mandibular condyle fractures adequate?].

Between 1980 and 1993 81 patients with a combined mandibular body and bilateral mandibular condyle fractures underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the mandibular body. The following methods were used: 29 x miniplate osteosynthesis, 28 x maxiplate osteosynthesis, 13 x lag screws, 10 x combinations and once titanium mesh. Reoperations because of occlusal disturbances were necessary in two cases of miniplate fixation, in one case of maxiplate fixation and in one case of lag screw fixation. In 1994 28 patients were reviewed. Posterior crossbite as operative sequela was noted in 2 (out

Bilateral Mandibular Condylar Fractures with Associated External Auditory Canal Fractures and Otorrhagia.

A rare case of bilateral mandibular condylar fractures associated with bilateral external auditory canal fractures and otorrhagia is reported. The more severe external auditory canal fracture was present on the side of high condylar fracture, and the less severe external auditory canal fracture was ipsilateral to the condylar neck fracture. A mechanism of injury is proposed to account for such findings.

Surgical stabilization of a mandibular fracture in a pet African goose (Anser anser domesticus) with bilateral mandibular fractures.

A 7-month-old, 3.8 kg, female intact African goose (Anser anser domesticus), was presented on emergency after being struck by a metal chair during a strong gust of wind. Physical examination revealed ventral displacement of rostral portion of the mandible. A cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan confirmed complete, comminuted, bilateral fractures on the rostral portion of the mandibular body. Surgical intervention involved applying external fixation using self-threading Thread Mate System (TMS) pins, orthodontic chains, and dental acrylics to stabilize the right mandible. Indirect reductio

Superolateral Dislocation of Bilateral Mandibular Condyles With a Mandibular Body and Condyle Fracture.

An 82-year-old man fell from a motorcycle and was admitted with superolateral dislocation of the bilateral mandibular condyles. The displaced condyles on the right and left were hooked in the posterior root of the zygomatic arch and in the temporal fossa beyond the zygomatic arch, respectively. There was a sagittal split fracture on the medial side of the right mandibular condyle and a right mandibular body fracture. Under general anesthesia, manual reduction of the dislocation was successfully performed the day after the injury. Bilateral superolateral dislocations hooked to the temporal foss

Pediatric mandibular condyle fractures: A decade of experience.

The mandibular condyle is a common site of facial fractures in children; however, it remains a clinical challenge due to its unique remodeling capacity and the ongoing debate over optimal treatment strategies. This study presents the clinical experience of a tertiary trauma center in Istanbul, Turkey, according to the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Clinic's treatment guidelines. A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients treated between 2010 and 2020. Condylar fractures were evaluated in terms of clinical presentation, Helkimo index scores and radiological subtypes. A total of 60 p

Factors associated with plate fractures in mandibular reconstruction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Mandibular plate fracture (MPF) is a serious complication of mandibular reconstruction, leading to postoperative morbidity and potential revision surgeries. Recently, there has been an increased utilization of virtual surgical planning (VSP) with patient-specific reconstruction plates to decrease operative time and improve postoperative outcomes. It is critical for surgeons performing mandibular reconstruction to have a comprehensive understanding of the contributing factors and strategies for minimizing the likelihood of MPF. RECENT FINDINGS: This review examines the patie

Non-surgical management of non-condylar mandibular fractures.

Unlike fractures of the remaining facial skeleton, fractures of the non-condylar part of the mandible are invariably treated surgically, with the potential risk of further iatrogenic injury. There is, however, a substantial evidence gap pertaining to the potential non-surgical management of such injuries. The aim of this study was to determine the outcomes of mandibular fractures treated with non-surgical management. All patients with mandibular fractures who were referred to a large regional major trauma service over a one-year period (1 January-31 December 2021) were identified. Those treate…
