Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Disorders: An Overview of Peer-Reviewed Publications 2018-2022.

Context Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) has been claimed to be effective in various human disorders and conditions. There have been many anecdotal claims to lend credence to the efficacy of this treatment modality. Recently, much work has been done in evidence-based, government-funded projects, and clinical trials in OMM research, and these studies have further demonstrated the efficacy of OMM as direct, integrated, or complementary mechanisms in treating various conditions. Objectives As the field of OMM research has grown significantly in the past few years, we set out to analyze the

Augmentation of immune response to vaccinations through osteopathic manipulative treatment: a study of procedure.

CONTEXT: Anecdotal evidence suggested that osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) may have imparted survivability to patients in osteopathic hospitals during the 1918 influenza pandemic. In addition, previous OMT research publications throughout the past century have shown evidence of increased lymphatic movement, resulting in improved immunologic function qualitatively and quantitatively. OBJECTIVES: The following is a description of a proposed protocol to evaluate OMT effects on antibody generation in the peripheral circulation in response to a vaccine and its possible use in the augmenta

A Review of Glymphatics and the Impact of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment in Alzheimer's Disease, Concussions, and Beyond.

Glymph is a fluid that circulates in the brain interstitium and, under pathological conditions, unusually accumulates and enhances the buildup of other noxious molecules. The study of this process of circulation, accumulation, and clearance is called glymphatics. We review the physiology of glymphatics and then dive into recent innovative research surrounding this neurological field of study and how it has applied to mainstream pathological processes, including Alzheimer's disease and spectrums of traumatic brain injury that range from a concussion to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Reduction and Resolution of a Hiatal Hernia Using Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment: A Case Report.

Hiatal hernia is a condition where components of the abdominal cavity, most often a part of the stomach, penetrate through the diaphragm and into the chest cavity. The symptoms of hiatal hernias may differ secondary to their type and severity. The two main types of hiatal hernias are sliding and paraesophageal. Sliding hernias, which are more common and less of a cause for concern, are when the upper portion of the stomach and junction between the stomach and esophagus slides up into the thoracic cavity through a weakened diaphragm. These hernias account for the majority of all hiatal hernias,

Osteopathic Manipulative Therapy in Patients With Chronic Tension-Type Headache: A Pilot Study.

CONTEXT: Nonpharmacologic treatment, such as osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMTh; manipulative care provided by foreign-trained osteopaths) may be a beneficial complementary treatment for tension-type headache. However, to the authors' knowledge, the benefit of OMTh in the management of tension-type headache has not been explored, especially chronic tension-type headache (CTTH). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of OMTh compared with traditional treatment in reducing pain intensity, frequency, and duration of CTTH, and to evaluate the objective postural measurement of the forward

Hypnosis and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment for Visual Disorders During Pregnancy: A Case Report.

Context • Pregnancy causes physiological alterations to the visual system, particularly in relation to retinal vascularization, with a consequent increase of intraocular pressure, and to the lacrimal fluid, with a consequent ocular dryness, which both can lead to a reduction in visual acuity. Numerous case reports refer to the employment of hypnotic treatment in cases of myopia, but the literature does not report any case of decreased visual acuity postpartum that was treated with hypnosis. Objective • For women with visual disorders that had appeared during pregnancy or were preexisting, the

Management of Cesarean Deliveries and Cesarean Scars With Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment: A Brief Report.

Cesarean scars pose a unique set of risks for women who have had previous cesarean deliveries. Between 1996 and 2007, the rate of trial of labor after previous cesarean delivery increased, along with reported rates of uterine rupture and other complications. Consequently, trial of labor after previous cesarean delivery and resultant vaginal birth after cesarean delivery have decreased and cesarean delivery has increased. With nearly one-third of women having cesarean delivery, the rate of rare complications such as cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy has also increased. An integration of osteopath

Musculoskeletal dysfunction and drop foot: diagnosis and management using osteopathic manipulative medicine.

Drop foot arises from dysfunction within the anatomic, muscular, or neurologic aspects of the lower extremity. The authors describe a patient with drop foot who had a compressed common peroneal nerve caused by posterior fibular head dysfunction. One 15-minute session of osteopathic manipulative treatment resolved the patient's symptoms. It is important for physicians to use osteopathic manipulative medicine to diagnosis and manage this condition, particularly when it results from fibular head dysfunction.

Carpal tunnel dimensions following osteopathic manipulation utilizing dorsal carpal arch muscle energy: a pilot study.

CONTEXT: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common entrapment neuropathy. When mild to moderate in severity, nonoperative treatments including osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) have been found to be effective. Studies have been carried out to quantify the mechanism of such treatments with cadaver studies, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound. OBJECTIVES: This pilot project investigated the mechanism of a previously undescribed technique of nonoperative carpal tunnel treatment, dorsal carpal arch muscle energy (DCA-ME), which focuses on the dorsal arch (trapezium, trap

Onset of complications following cervical manipulation due to malpractice in osteopathic treatment: a case report.

The aim of this study is to correlate cervical disc herniation with manipulation performed by a non-physician osteopath on a patient complaining of neck pain. The authors report a case in which a woman - treated with osteopathic spinal manipulation - developed cervical-brachial neuralgia following the cervical disc herniation. The patient then underwent surgery and was followed by physiotherapists. A clinical condition characterized by limitation of neck mobility, with pain and sensory deficit in the right arm and II-III fingers, still persists. The patient consulted the authors to establish w

Ultrasonographic evaluation of the effect of osteopathic manipulative techniques on thoracic outlet syndrome: a preliminary study.

CONTEXT: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) involves the compression of neural or vascular structures in or near the superior thoracic aperture, and osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) can be utilized to relieve associated symptoms. Ultrasonography may be useful for determining possible mechanisms by which OMT reduces symptoms, leading to an improved understanding of how to best implement OMT techniques for the treatment of TOS. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop a Doppler ultrasonography protocol to assess blood flow changes in the subclavian artery before and after OMT that was intende

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment as an Adjunctive Therapy for Post-mastectomy Pain Syndrome: A Case Report.

Post-mastectomy pain syndrome (PMPS) is a common yet often under-treated complication of breast cancer therapy, affecting an estimated 20-60% of patients. Characterized by persistent pain lasting greater than three months following breast surgery, PMPS is multifactorial in etiology, involving neuropathic injury, post-surgical fibrosis, radiation-induced tissue changes, and musculoskeletal dysfunction. Current management strategies emphasize a multidisciplinary approach, including pharmacological therapies and non-pharmacological modalities. Despite this, treatment outcomes remain variable, and

The role of osteopathic manipulative medicine in cerebral palsy: bridging treatment gaps and enhancing care.

Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is a hands-on approach utilized by physicians to diagnose, treat, and prevent various conditions through the application of muscle manipulation techniques. It has been applied in managing chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain, headaches, migraines, Parkinsonian gait, and psychological conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression. In our narrative review, we aim to integrate both direct clinical studies of OMM in cerebral palsy (CP) and supportive literature on mechanisms and related conditions. A comprehensive literature search was conducted utilizing

Neuropsychiatric considerations in treating anorexia nervosa patients with osteopathic manipulative medicine: a narrative review.

Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) has a growing recognition in serving as an effective treatment to promote adaptation and homeostasis of the body by addressing musculoskeletal, neural, vascular, and lymphatic structures to promote self-healing and regulation. OMM can treat the musculoskeletal tension and sympathetic hyperactivity resulting from the increased cortisol response and hypersensitivity found in varying psychiatric illnesses, including anorexia nervosa (AN). This paper addresses the considerations necessary for treating AN patients with OMM, emphasizing the need to evaluate th

Integrating osteopathic manipulative treatment into prenatal care visits in a family medicine resident clinic.

Literature describing the integration of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) during prenatal care visits in a resident clinic setting are scarce. Concise and readily accessible resources reviewing OMT in pregnancy are limited. We sought to integrate OMT into routine prenatal care appointments in a family medicine resident clinic setting and create a concise resource for those performing OMT in pregnancy. Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain in pregnancy is common. Specifically, low back pain (LBP) often accompanies pregnancy and may negatively impact sleep, the ability to work, and the ability to c

Inflammatory Biochemical Mediators and Their Role in Myofascial Pain and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment: A Literature Review.

Chronic inflammatory pain conditions, specifically myofascial pain (MFP), account for an overwhelming percentage of office visits every day. The combination of the high cost of its treatment and frequent patient visits makes MFP a critical pathology to be investigated. Sharpening our understanding of the molecular mechanisms within MFP will expedite the enhancement of therapeutic approaches. Inflammation plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of MFP. The chief inflammatory mediators of interest in this review related to MFP are interleukin 1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α (T

Postoperative Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment in Children with Esophageal Atresia: Potential Benefits on the Anthropometric Parameters.

Esophageal atresia (EA) is a congenital malformation that affects the normal esophageal development. Surgical treatment, although restoring the integrity of the alimentary tract, may lead to long-term sequelae-like developmental abnormalities and musculoskeletal deformities. We evaluated the effects of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) on the recovery of the range of the right upper limb movement and on the rise of the auxological parameters. A case series of five children affected by type C EA were described. Six OMT sessions were performed over a 4-month period. At each treatment, hei
