Mating induces behavioral and physiological changes in female insects-collectively referred to as the female post-mating response (PMR)-that facilitate the production of progeny. PMRs are elicited by transfer of male-derived seminal components during mating, but are altered by other factors, including adult age. Increased female age is often accompanied by declines in fertility. However, mating shortly after emergence also impacts fertility in the insect model Drosophila melanogaster. Here, we determined the age post-emergence when females of the vector mosquito Aedes aegypti can be inseminate

Schistosoma mansoni and S. intercalatum, two schistosomes from different evolutionary lineages, are parasitic in humans and therefore able to co-infect the same host where they occur sympatrically in Africa. Previous studies of mating interactions between these species in mice, using the Lower Guinea strain of S. intercalatum, have demonstrated the competitive dominance of S. mansoni over S. intercalatum in terms of pairing ability, which is potentially an important mechanism restricting the distribution of S. intercalatum in Africa. The study presented here examines the mating interactions in

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Systems of reproduction differ with respect to the magnitude of neutral genetic diversity maintained in a population. In particular, the partitioning of reproductive organisms into mating types and regular inbreeding have long been recognized as key factors that influence effective population number. Here, a range of reproductive systems are compared with respect to the maintenance of neutral genetic diversity. This study addresses full gonochorism, full hermaphroditism, androdioecy (male and hermaphroditic reproductives), and gynodioecy (female and hermaphroditic reprod

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) and mating system diversity are key factors shaping reproductive evolution, yet their relationships with post-mating sexual selection remain incompletely understood. Here, we use a comparative framework across multiple species of Dolomedes fishing spiders to examine how mating systems, sperm production strategies, and proxies of postcopulatory selection relate to SSD. We quantified testes size and spermatogenesis in three closely related species-D. tenebrosus, D. okefinokensis, and D. scriptus-that differ in mating system and SSD. Dolomedes tenebrosus, a monogynous

In both humans and nonhuman animals, mating strategies represent a set of evolutionary adaptations aimed at promoting individual fitness by means of reproduction with the best possible partners. Given this critical role, mating strategies influence numerous aspects of human life. In particular, between-sex divergence in the intensity of intrasexual competition could account for robust cross-cultural sex differences in psychology and behavior (e.g., personality, psychiatric disorders, social behavior, violence). Several other factors (including individual differences, relationship type and envi

The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between pre-mating nutrition and the relative amounts of a panel of developmentally relevant genes in ovine oocytes and granulosa cells. Cast age ewes were fed a ration providing 0.5x (0.5 M) or 1.5x (1.5 M) live weight maintenance requirements for 2 weeks before slaughter. The ewes were synchronized and superovulated with FSH and pregnant mares serum gonadotropin. At slaughter, oocytes and granulosa cells were aspirated from follicles >2 mm in diameter and the relative abundance of 8 and 17 transcripts in oocytes and granulosa cel

BACKGROUND: Identification of risk factors for BK polyoma virus (BKPyV) without confounding by donor factors and era effects in paired analysis may inform strategies to prevent BKPyV.
METHODS: In this analysis of 21,575 mate kidney pairs in the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients between 2004 and 2010, the presence of a treatment code for BKPyV virus in follow-up forms was used to identify pairs in which 1 of 2 mate kidneys was treated (discordant treatment) or both mate kidneys were treated (concordant treatment).
RESULTS: Among 1975 discordant pairs, younger than 18 years or 60 ye

The alpha-factor pheromone receptor (Ste2p) of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae belongs to the family of G protein-coupled receptors that contain seven transmembrane domains (TMDs). Because polar residues can influence receptor structure by forming intramolecular contacts between TMDs, we tested the role of the five polar amino acids in TMD6 of the alpha-factor receptor by mutating these residues to nonpolar leucine. Interestingly, a subset of these mutants showed increased affinity for ligand and constitutive receptor activity. The mutation of the most polar residue, Q253L, resulted in 25-f

The mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways control diverse cellular functions in pathogenic fungi, including sexual differentiation, stress response, and maintenance of cell wall integrity. Here we characterized a Cryptococcus neoformans gene, which is homologous to the yeast Ste50 that is known to play an important role in mating pheromone response and stress response as an adaptor protein to the Ste11 MAPK kinase kinase in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The C. neoformans Ste50 was not involved in any of the stress responses or virulence factor production (capsule and melanin) that are c

BACKGROUND: Animal conservation often requires intensive management actions to improve reproductive output, yet any adverse effects of these may not be immediately apparent, particularly in threatened species with small populations and long lifespans. Hand-rearing is an example of a conservation management strategy which, while boosting populations, can cause long-term demographic and behavioural problems. It is used in the recovery of the critically endangered kākāpō (Strigops habroptilus), a flightless parrot endemic to New Zealand, to improve the slow population growth that is due to infreq

Based on recent studies using both field surveys and laboratory experiments, we review a number of central reproductive traits of the androdioecious barnacle Scalpellum scalpellum. For the first time in any scalpellid species, development has been followed from cypris settlement until a mature dwarf male and compared with the early ontogeny of hermaphrodites. Cyprids settled in preformed receptacles on mature hermaphrodites started to deviate structurally from hermaphrodites almost immediately after attachment. After 14 days they had matured into adult dwarf males that do not resemble any stag

INTRODUCTION: Longer cold ischemia time (CIT) is a deleterious factor for kidney transplant (KTx) outcomes and may lead Tx teams to graft discard. Because the CIT in Brazil is overall very high, the objective of this study was to compare outcomes among mate recipients of KTx with distinct CIT.
METHODS: We studied 106 mate recipients of KTx in a single center followed for 1-year post-Tx. Mate kidneys were analyzed comparing the first and the second recipient to be transplanted. In a second analysis, we grouped mate recipients according to the CIT: ≤ 20 hours, > 20 hours, and mixed CIT.

Cold stress is an important abiotic factor that can impact insect physiology, behavior, and overall fitness. Upon exposure to cold temperature, many insects enter a reversible state of immobility called chill coma. If the cold stress is brief and mild enough, insects can recover and regain full mobility upon return to warmer temperatures. However, the long-term impact of sublethal cold stress on insect behavior has been understudied. Here, sexually naïve adult male Acheta domesticus crickets were exposed to a single 0 °C cold stress for 6 h. One week later, the ability of these males to mate w

Pathogenic fungi of the genus Cryptococcus can undergo two sexual cycles, involving either bisexual diploidization (after fusion of haploid cells of different mating type) or unisexual diploidization (by autodiploidization of a single cell). Here, we construct a gene-deletion library for 111 transcription factor genes in Cryptococcus deneoformans, and explore the roles of these regulatory networks in the two reproductive modes. We show that transcription factors crucial for bisexual syngamy induce the expression of known mating determinants as well as other conserved genes of unknown function.

Qsp1 is a secreted quorum sensing peptide required for virulence of the fungal meningitis pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. Qsp1 functions to control cell wall integrity in vegetatively growing cells and also functions in mating. Rather than acting on a cell surface receptor, Qsp1 is imported to act intracellularly via the predicted oligopeptide transporter Opt1. Here, we identify a transcription factor network as a target of Qsp1. Using whole-genome chromatin immunoprecipitation, we find Qsp1 controls the genomic associations of three transcription factors to genes whose outputs are regulated

Reproduction is paramount to animals. For it to be successful, a coordination of social behavior, physiology, and gamete production is necessary. How are social cues perceived and how do they affect physiology and gametogenesis? While females, ranging from insects to mammals, have provided multiple insights about this coordination, its existence remains largely unknown in males. Here, by using the Drosophila male as a model, we describe a phenomenon by which the availability of potential mating partners triggers an activation state on the stem cell populations of the testis, boosting spermatog

In the silkmoth, Bombyx mori, mating accelerates egg laying. Sterilized males did not induce females to oviposit, whereas artificial insemination was enough to accelerate oviposition. These findings showed that mechanical stimulation of the outer reproductive organs and the bursa copulatrix (BC) had no effect on oviposition. Factors included in seminal fluids also did not stimulate oviposition because neither implantation of female internal reproductive organs nor injection of the spermatophore extract into virgin females activated oviposition. Preventing sperm precedence by experimental remov

A serious year-round fertility problem on a commercial piggery was investigated. The problem was characterised by a high proportion of non-pregnant sows and gilts which showed a delayed return or failure to return to oestrus after a normal mating to a fertile boar. Several factors were identified that we considered to be placing undue stress on the breeding stock from wearning through mating and early pregnancy. When steps were taken to reduce the influence of these stressors there was a marked improvement in the herd farrowing rate. Across all months this improvement was largely due to a redu
