Maxillary sinus bone augmentation techniques.

Maxillary sinus expansion and atrophy can be difficult to overcome for patients who require functional dental prostheses. One solution for this problem is sinus augmentation and implant placement. Patients are evaluated and diagnosis is ascertained, leading to development of a treatment plan and surgical strategy. The surgeon decides on a surgical technique and grafting material, based on ultimate success, stability, and function as they relate to the goals. Complications can occur during an operation or during the postoperative healing phase. Dealing with these complications can be challengin

Sex determination using maxillary sinus.

BACKGROUND: Individual identification is a subtle concept and often one of the most important priorities in mass disasters, road accidents, air crashes, fires, and even in the investigation of criminal cases. Matching specific features detected on the cadaver with data recorded during the life of an individual is an important aspect in forensics, and can be performed by fingerprint analysis, deoxyribonucleic acid matching, anthropological methods, radiological methods and other techniques which can facilitate age and sex identification. Sinus radiography is one such method that has been used f

Maxillary sinus tuberculosis: various presentations.

Tuberculosis (TB) of the maxillary sinus is rare. We describe the clinical presentation, management and outcome in two human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seronegative patients with histopathologically confirmed maxillary sinus TB. One of the patients who presented earlier in the course of the disease could be managed with antituberculosis treatment alone, while the other who presented late required surgical intervention as well.

[Foreign bodies in maxillary sinus].

INTRODUCTION: Foreign bodies in maxillary sinus (FBMS), whatever their origin or nature, are an unusual clinical condition. Diagnosis is based on the radiological findings in a clinical context of unilateral chronic rhinosinusitis. Treatment is the surgical removal of the intrasinusal foreign body. PATIENTS AND METHODS: To identify FBMS, the records of 68 patients with unilateral chronic rhinosinusitis operated on from 2000 to 2007 were reviewed. RESULTS: From 68 records reviewed, we found 11 (16 %) FBMS. Ten (91 %) of these 11 foreign bodies were thought to come from the teeth and the last

Cholesterol granuloma of maxillary sinus.

The cholesterol granuloma is a particular form of granulation tissue developing as part of a variety of tissue reactions. It is usually associated with chronic middle ear disease and is common in the mastoid antrum of temporal bone. Cholesterol granuloma is rare in maxillary antrum. A case is reported of cholesterol granuloma in the maxillary sinus of a 42-year-old man, with the unique feature that the soft tissue lesion is enclosed by thick bone, entirely within the sinus.

Post-traumatic maxillary sinus mucocele.

Two cases of post-traumatic maxillary sinus mucoceles are described. In both scenarios, the patients had sustained severe facial injuries many years prior to presentation. Proptosis and globe displacement were identified clinically, and both patients had radiographic evidence of a maxillary sinus mucocele. Maxillary sinus mucoceles may occur as a late complication of facial fractures even if the draining ostium is normal.

Maxillary sinus atelectasis with enophthalmos.

Chronic maxillary sinusitis may present as atelectasis of the sinus with changes to surrounding structures. Several mechanisms have been proposed for this problem. Chronic obstruction of the sinus ostium, with resultant retention of secretions and osteitic bone resorption, may account for these changes. Enophthalmos is one manifestation that may require corrective treatment. Titanium micromesh reconstruction of the orbital floor, with or without onlay concha cartilage, has reliably resolved the enophthalmos. Reconstruction of the orbital floor and ventilation of the obstructed sinus ostium may

The effect of the presence of the accessory maxillary ostium on the maxillary sinus.

This study was conducted to investigate the presence of the accessory maxillary ostium and its effects on the maxillary sinus, and the concurrent occurrence of morphological variations of neighboring anatomical structures. This study was performed in a tertiary referral center. This is a cross-sectional retrospective study that evaluated coronal CTs of patients to determine the frequency of the accessory maxillary ostium and investigated any simultaneous morphological variations in neighboring anatomical structures. The presence of the accessory maxillary ostium (AMO) plus any concurrent morph

Double maxillary antrum as a cause of maxillary sinus mucocele.

We report a rare case of a mucocele occurring in a naturally compartmentalized maxillary sinus in a 50-year-old woman. Sinus computerized tomography (CT) showed the antrum to be divided by a vertical bony septum, producing a mucocele within an isolated and non-draining anterolateral compartment. Accidental trauma to the thin bony shell precipitated rapid swelling of the pre-existing mass, leading to her initial consultation. A wide sublabial surgical approach allowed complete excision with a good cosmetic result.

Successful Management of Apically Exposed Implants in the Maxillary Sinus and Associated Sinus Pathologies Via Maxillary Sinus Floor Augmentation.

One common complication with dental implants placed in the atrophic posterior maxilla, especially with simultaneous transcrestal sinus augmentation, is the implant protruding into the sinus without apical bone support. Frequently, apically exposed implants contribute to various sinus pathologies that may lead to implant failure. Treatment options include (1) managing asymptomatic sinus pathology; (2) regrafting the apically exposed portion of the implant(s); and (3) removing the implant and placing a new implant with simultaneous grafting. The purpose of this case report is to present 4 clinic

The relationship between structures affecting maxillary sinus ventilation and maxillary sinus volume: a CT study.

PURPOSE: This study aims to identify anatomical variations inside and outside the maxillary sinus (MS), determine their prevalence and coexistence, and investigate their relationship with MS volume in individuals without MS pathology, using ImFusion Suite software. METHODS: Analysis of 330 paranasal CT scans obtained from the radiology archive (2018-2021) was performed using the ImFusion Suite program. Anatomical variations, including accessory ostium, Haller cells, ethmomaxillary sinus, concha anomalies, septa, and impacted teeth, were identified and their frequency of coexistence was determ

Comparison of maxillary sinus specimens removed during Caldwell-Luc procedures and traditional maxillary sinus antrostomies.

The cases of 80 patients who underwent Caldwell-Luc surgery for the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis between 2002 and 2007 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center's Department of Otolaryngology were reviewed. Data on demographics, comorbidities, details of surgery, surgical pathology, and histology were collected. These data were compared with those of 40 patients who underwent standard functional endoscopic sinus surgery in 2007. Statistically significant differences were found in terms of mean patient age, sex, mean number of sinuses surgically addressed, number of prior surgeries, and ti

Maxillary sinus augmentation following removal of a maxillary sinus pseudocyst after a shortened healing period.

PURPOSE: Dome-shaped radiopacities on the floor of the maxillary sinus are commonly interpreted as a sinus cyst on radiographs during dental implant planning. They might present an obstacle in sinus grafting, leading to bone graft failure or implant loss later. The therapeutic approaches to the removal of such cystic lesions and the following sinus augmentation are still controversial. The purpose of this article is to present a modified technique that can be used for predictable removal of a maxillary sinus cyst and sinus augmentation after a shortened healing period in patients with maxillar

Silent sinus syndrome and maxillary sinus atelectasis in children.

OBJECTIVE: Silent sinus syndrome (SSS) and chronic maxillary atelectasis (CMA) are unusual conditions having subtle symptoms with a possible progressive evolution. They are particularly infrequent in the pediatric population. Our objective was to review our experience with pediatric patients having SSS or CMA, and to review all cases involving patients under 14 years of age reported in the literature. METHODS: A retrospective review of 6 patients diagnosed with SSS or CMA surgically treated from 2001 to 2014 was carried out. All cases reported in literature were reviewed. RESULTS: All patien

[Function and physiology of the maxillary sinus].

BACKGROUND: The question of the "true" function of the maxillary sinus and the paranasal sinuses (PS) has been a controversial issue in the literature for decades, leading to many discussions and speculations. OBJECTIVE: This review briefly summarizes various theories on the possible physiology and functions of the maxillary sinus/PS that have been discussed over the centuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed using a combination of the search terms "physiology," "function," "maxillary sinus," and "paranasal sinuses." RESULTS: Current and scientifically evi
