[Maxillary sinus hypoplasia masquerading a chronic sinusitis].

Maxillary sinus hypoplasia is a relatively uncommon clinical condition that may be misdiagnosed as chronic sinusitis or neoplasm by otolaryngologist. We report an unilateral clinical case of this entity confirmed by CT and a short literature review is performed at this respect.

Microbiology and management of chronic maxillary sinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: Assessment of the microbiology and management of patients who suffered from chronic maxillary sinusitis was studied retrospectively. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of microbiology and antimicrobial therapy of 68 patients who underwent the Caldwell-Luc procedure for chronic sinusitis had not received antimicrobials before surgery and whose cultures showed bacterial growth. SETTING: This study was performed at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md. INTERVENTION: Amoxicillin-clavulanic acid was given to 18 patients, amoxicillin or ampicillin to 25, cefaclor to 17, and erythromycin to e…

Allergy in patients with acute maxillary sinusitis.

The occurrence of allergy was studied in 224 patients with verified acute maxillary sinusitis by means of an allergy questionnaire, skin testing, and nasal smears. Allergy was found in 56 patients (25%). In addition, allergy was considered probable in 14 patients (6.5%). The corresponding percentages in the control group were 16.5 and 3, respectively. The difference is statistically significant P less than 0.05). However, the frequency of allergy is lower in the present series than in those previously reported on chronic sinusitis. There were no differences between allergic and non-allergic pa…

Fibrous dysplasia masquerading as chronic maxillary sinusitis.

Fibrous dysplasia is a rare disease of unknown cause that affects one or multiple bones. In its monostotic form, only one bone is involved. The maxilla is the most commonly affected facial bone. Facial deformity with or without pain is the most common presentation of fibrous dysplasia affecting the craniofacial bones. In certain cases the disorder can present clinically as chronic maxillary sinusitis. The clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings, as well as the differential diagnosis and treatment of this condition are reviewed.

Bacteriology of chronic maxillary sinusitis in adults.

Aspirates of 72 chronically inflamed maxillary sinuses were processed for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Bacterial growth was present in 66 of the 72 specimens (92%). Anaerobic bacteria were isolated in 58 of the 66 culture-positive specimens (88%). Anaerobes only were recovered in 37 cases (56%) and in 21 (32%) they were mixed with aerobic or facultative bacteria. Aerobic or facultative bacteria were present in eight cases (12%). A total of 185 isolates (2.8 per specimen)--131 (2.0 per specimen) anaerobes and 54 (0.8 per specimen) aerobes or facultatives--were isolated. The predominant anaer

Treatment of chronic maxillary sinusitis in children.

In the present study 141 children aged between 3 and 10 years and suffering from chronic maxillary sinusitis were treated non-selectively in one of 4 ways: amoxicillin combined with decongestive nose drops, drainage of the maxillary sinus, a combination of the two, or a placebo. The duration of the follow-up period was 6 months. The therapeutic effects of the 4 forms of treatment did not differ significantly. Haemophilus influenzae and streptococcus pneumoniae were the micro-organisms encountered most often in these children. The results are discussed.

Chronic maxillary sinusitis. Differential diagnosis and genesis.

By a careful ENT and oral examination of 111 patients with suspected chronic maxillary sinusitis, the diagnosis was verified in only 56% (62/111). In 29 of these 62 patients (47%) a relation to dental infections was found, periodontitis being as frequent as apical granulomas. In 61% of the patients, in whom the diagnosis chronic maxillary sinusitis could not be verified, dental infections and/or myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome (MPD) were the most common and likely cause of the symptoms. A careful oral examination including dental radiographs is thus important in patients with chronic maxi…

Spontaneous enophthalmos associated with chronic maxillary sinusitis.

Enophthalmos and ptosis of the globe is usually a consequence of orbital trauma resulting in a blowout fracture of the orbital floor. Surgical exploration reveals a loss of inferior support due to a disruption of the bony orbital floor. We document five patients with a syndrome of spontaneous enophthalmos and ptosis of the globe unassociated with orbital trauma. The apparent dissolution of the orbital floor causes the loss of inferior support. There is a strong association with ipsilateral chronic maxillary sinus disease.

Symptoms and signs of acute maxillary sinusitis.

Symptoms and signs of acute maxillary sinusitis have seldom been specifically analyzed. Since there is a gradual transition from rhinitis to sinusitis it can be expected that many symptoms are common for the two diseases. However, since sinusitis requires drainage measures and/or antibiotic treatment, both of which seldom are actual for rhinitis, the differential diagnosis is important. The present investigation confirms most of the symptoms presented previously in textbooks. However, most of these sympatoms which conventionally are supposed to indicate sinus disease were found to be just as c…

Endoscopic Transnasal Apicoectomy for Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis.

Endoscopic transnasal apicoectomy (ETA) is a novel multidisciplinary technique that combines endoscopic sinus surgery with apicoectomy via a transnasal approach. ETA enables direct access to periapical lesions while preserving the causative tooth. Our initial experience suggests that this minimally invasive approach is safe, feasible, and effective for selected cases of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis.

Wooden spatula sinusitis following maxillary expansion surgery.

Sinusitis is a recognised rare complication of palatine expansion procedures and is usually caused by the presence of an oroantral fistula. We report the first case of unilateral sinusitis as a result of a retained foreign body (a wooden spatula) following a surgically assisted rapid palatine expansion procedure.
