Safety belts reduce the frequency and severity of injuries sustained in motor vehicle crashes. Since the head and face are the most frequently injured anatomic regions in motor vehicle crash victims, the use of active restraints should lessen these injuries. This study was undertaken to examine the ability of safety belts to prevent and alter the pattern of maxillofacial injuries. During a 6-month period beginning February 1, 1987, 613 motor vehicle crash victims presented alive to the Trauma Center at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville and were entered into this study. Patients with equine-related injuries (ERI) have high rates of hospitalization and often require surgical treatment. This study aimed to clarify the injury profiles of patients sustaining ERI-related craniofacial fractures and their relationship with other severe head and neck injuries. This retrospective study included all patients with craniofacial fractures admitted to a tertiary trauma center during 2013 to 2018. Out of 3256 patients, a total of 39 patients were included in the study (1.2%). Demographic and clinically relevant variables were reported and statistically evaluated.Males repres

Five cases of machete cut injuries to the maxillofacial region seen over a period of 8 months (January-September, 2012), at the Maxillofacial Unit of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Nigeria, are presented. The severity of the injuries is evident from the extent of tissue disruption as shown in the pictures. The immediate threats to life in the cases were hemorrhage and airway obstruction. Surgical repairs were performed under local anesthetic infiltration in three cases while the rest were performed under general anesthesia. There was no nerve repair done due to lack of facil

BACKGROUND/AIM: Traumatic dental injuries are frequently combined with maxillofacial fractures, but literature addressing this topic is rare. In a retrospective study, the frequency of dental lesions in inpatients with traumatic facial injuries was analyzed.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz for inpatient treatment due to facial fractures between January 2001 and December 2007 were analyzed regarding the type of fracture, its localization, and potential con

OBJECTIVE: Isolated facial injuries are less common among pediatric trauma patients. The literature has focused on, especially, fractures in facial injuries. There is a limited number of studies evaluating all facial injuries in childhood. The study aims to evaluate the clinical characteristics of maxillofacial injuries and to identify patients who require further intervention.
METHODS: The data from pediatric patients with maxillofacial injury (<18 years) between January 2011 and December 2015 were collected. Demographic characteristics, trauma mechanisms, concomitant injuries, treatments, h…

BACKGROUND: Road traffic accidents (RTA) are one of the foremost causes of head injuries and its prevalence is more in developing countries owing to its unorganised road utilisation system. Maxillofacial injuries occur in 5-33% of all trauma cases universally and are commonly associated with head injury (HI).
AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this prospective study is to determine the incidence and pattern of facial fractures in head injury patients and to evaluate the relationship between them. Does the midface acts as a cushion to the brain when subjected to trauma?

OBJECTIVES: To analyse and evaluate the correlation between traumatic head injuries (THIs) and maxillofacial fractures (MF). Age, gender and trauma mechanism correlated with THI were also investigated.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a hospital-based retrospective case-control study at Stomatology College and Hospital, Wuhan University. From January 2000 to December 2009, a total of 1131 patients with MF were enrolled in the statistical study to evaluate the association of THI and other risk factors with MF. Among these patients, 86 presented with THI. We utilized binary logistic regressio

Nasoethmoid-orbital (NEO) fractures are typically resulted by a drastic, forceful blow to the central aspect of the head and nose, associated injuries to adjacent structures occur and involve the midface, anterior cranial fossa and the eye. Dislocated bony parts of the nose may be impacted into the intraorbital region and lead to severe complications: cerebrospinal fluid leak, optic nerve lesion, anosmy, telecanthus and diplopy. In the complex management of the craniofacial lesions, a cooperative team-work of maxillofacial surgeon, neurosurgeon, otolaryngologist and ophthalmologist is required
