By the intratracheal injection into monkeys of unfiltered nasopharyngeal washings from cases of measles in the preeruptive and early eruptive stages of the disease a relatively constant group of symptoms was induced which closely resemble those of measles in man. Of seven monkeys inoculated intratracheally with unfiltered nasopharyngeal washings from seven cases of measles, five developed the symptoms. The same group of symptoms was induced in one monkey by inoculation of the mucous membrane of the nose and mouth with unfiltered nasopharyngeal washings from a case of measles. In these experime…

In order to gather information on the factors affecting the spread of measles vaccine in Pakistan, 287 mothers living in Karachi were interviewed concerning their knowledge, attitude and beliefs about measles and measles vaccine. Measles had been highly prevalent, mainly among infants between 9 and 18 months of age. The severity of the illness and the frequency of complications were well known and the importance of immunizations was well recognized. In traditional combined families grandparents had made the decision to take children for immunization, but many mothers had begun to feel that the…

A 3-month-old girl who developed severe measles encephalitis after neonatal measles is reported. Her mother had measles when she was ten days old and she was admitted to our hospital with low grade fever, Koplik spot, and mild exanthema seventeen days after birth, and she recovered in 7 days without any complication. At three months of age, she was readmitted because of intractable seizures. The levels of IgM and IgG antibodies against measles in the cerebrospinal fluid were elevated. The measles virus genome, amplifying the region encoding the nucleocapsid protein, was detected from the brain…

Between the years 1968 and 1979, 87 cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) appeared among the Israeli-born population. The incidence of SSPE dropped sharply in 1977, 10 years (the median age at onset of SSPE) after introduction of mass antimeasles vaccination, and remained low in 1978 and 1979. Most of the SSPE cases reported measles at an age significantly younger than that of the general population. This pattern did not change after introduction of antimeasles vaccination. Incidence was significantly lower (p less than 10(-9) in the vaccinated population than in the unvaccinated…

Measles morbidity is seen to follow a cyclic pattern with peaks and ebbs every 2--3 years. The maximum in the annual course is found in the second quarter, the peak of the age-specific morbidity in Central Europe in the 4th year of life. At 15 years of age, seroconversion is practically 100%. Complications can be expected in 6,7% of cases, mortality in about 1:10,000. Encephalitis occurs in about 1,2% of cases and is often followed by neurological and psychical damage.

Histories obtained in 350 of 375 clinically cofirmed cases of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) reported to a national registry showed that 292 patients had measles and 58 had no history of measles. Forty of the latter patients received live, attenuated measles virus vaccine. In patients with a history of measles, measles illness occurred before age 2 years in 46%, and a mean of 7.0 years before onset of SSPE. In contrast, there was no relationship of SSPE with age at vaccination in 35 of the 40 patients historically associated with measles vaccine, and SSPE occurred a mean of 3.3 yea…

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease transmitted by aerosols through human-to-human contact. It is often considered as a benign disease, although mortality remains high in developing countries (>5%). Frequent complications (diarrhea, otitis, pneumonia, encephalitis) can be observed. The disease mainly affects young children from 5 to 6 months of age with a mortality peak in the first three years of life. The Persian physician Rhazes gave the first clinical description of the disease in the 10th century, clearly differentiating it from smallpox. Measles spread worldwide from the Renaiss…

Measles is a highly contagious infectious disease, which needs more than 95% worldwide vaccination coverage of 2 doses to be eradicated. Despite an important involvement of the WHO for massive immunization, goals have not bean reached, and outbreaks can occur at any time in many countries, including Western Europe. In France, 22,000 cases were identified between 2009 and 2011, mainly in infants and young adults, which are not or not enough vaccinated (one dose). In 2012, even though the number of cases has drastically decreased, the outbreak is still going on, especially in South of France. Th…

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases implicated in an outbreak in Western Europe for a few years. In France, the outbreak began in 2008, especially in the southern regions. Most of the cases are mild but deleterious effects can occur in infants, during the pregnancy, or in immunosuppressive patients. Pneumonia and encephalitis are the major complications in these patients. Measles illness during pregnancy results in a higher risk of premature labor, spontaneous abortion, and low-birthweight infants. Death from measles was reported in approximately 0.3% of cases. The National Referenc…

From January 2008 to May 2012, over 22,000 cases of measles were reported in France. The highest incidence rate was observed in children below one year of age. Over 50% of cases were reported in young adults. Almost 5,000 patients were hospitalised including 1,023 with severe pneumonia, 27 with encephalitis and/or myelitis : 10 died. This situation is linked to insufficient and heterogeneous vaccination coverage with pockets of susceptible people allowing virus circulation. Although the vaccine coverage in children has now improved for both doses, the issue of convincing young susceptible adul…

Measles is an acute disease characterized by fever, cough, conjunctivitis, erythematous maculopapular rash and pathognomonic enanthem. Vaccination had resulted in decrease of complications and mortality. But vaccination coverage in France is low, about 80%: the virus is always circulating and outbreaks in teenagers are possible. The recommendation of a booster dose at age eleven will contribute to reduce the incidence of the disease. Rubella is asymptomatic in 30 to 50% of infected children. There is a risk of transmission to pregnant women with negative serology. Reduction of virus circulatio…

Measles is an important cause of morbidity and mortality among the children of India. In spite of this it is not considered a serious problem by the health authorities. Practically no cases are reported, and only those children with significant complications are hospitalized. Thus hospital records do not reflect the magnitude of the problem. In recent years attention has been focused on the evaluation of the morbidity and mortality due to measles in India. In the absence of reliable estimates, it is presumed that almost everyone in India suffers from measles before the age of 10 years. Hospita…
