We treated 16 eyes with diabetic tractional retinal detachment with a new method of surgical dissection whereby diabetic preretinal membranes and adherent posterior hyaloid were excised and removed as a single unit. This method differs from previously reported methods of diabetic membrane dissection by utilizing the posterior hyaloid to lift and immobilize the membrane as the membrane is excised with horizontally cutting scissors. A noninvasive procedure was used to treat membranes within the vitreous with controlled exposure to focused high-intensity ultrasound in rabbit eyes. Membranes were created by injecting small quantities of platelet-rich plasma into the vitreous of the intact globe of anesthetized rabbits. Amniotic membrane dressings were tested in the treatment of 30 patients. Fifteen of them had burns, 5 had chronic varicose ulcers, and 10 had decubitus ulcers or other open infected wounds. No effort was made to separate the chorion from the amnion. Dressings were changed every 48 hours, and treatment was, in some cases, partially ambulatory. Good results were obtained in the treatment of 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns and of other open, infected wounds, both in the preparation of the patients for autografting and in consequent treatment.

Amniotic fluid embolism, also called anaphylactoid syndrome of pregnancy, is a rare but severe problem in obstetrics. It occurs in 8/100,000 births and the maternal mortality is up to 90%.
