Devil in the details? Developmental dyslexia and visual long-term memory for details.

Cognitive theories on causes of developmental dyslexia can be divided into language-specific and general accounts. While the former assume that words are special in that associated processing problems are rooted in language-related cognition (e.g., phonology) deficits, the latter propose that dyslexia is rather rooted in a general impairment of cognitive (e.g., visual and/or auditory) processing streams. In the present study, we examined to what extent dyslexia (typically characterized by poor orthographic representations) may be associated with a general deficit in visual long-term memory (LT

Temporal information processing in short- and long-term memory of patients with schizophrenia.

Cognitive deficits of patients with schizophrenia have been largely recognized as core symptoms of the disorder. One neglected factor that contributes to these deficits is the comprehension of time. In the present study, we assessed temporal information processing and manipulation from short- and long-term memory in 34 patients with chronic schizophrenia and 34 matched healthy controls. On the short-term memory temporal-order reconstruction task, an incidental or intentional learning strategy was deployed. Patients showed worse overall performance than healthy controls. The intentional learnin

Does the engram of kindling model the engram of normal long term memory?

The kindling effect is a relatively permanent alteration in brain function which results from repeated electrical or chemical stimulation and culminates in the appearance of electrographic and behavioral convulsions whenever the original stimulus is reapplied. The effect results from tetanic activation in the anterior cortex, limbic system or associated areas of the adult mammalian brain, and the lasting alterations are transynaptic and quite widespread. They are based in part on synaptic facilitation, and they are accompanied by specific alterations in normal behavior. In these and other resp

Working memory capacity links cognitive reserve with long-term memory in moderate to severe TBI: a translational approach.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have devastating negative consequences on an individuals' ability to remember information; however, there is variability among memory impairment resulting from TBI. Some individuals exhibit long-term memory (LTM) impairment while others do not. This variability has been explained, at least in part, by the theory of cognitive reserve (CR). The theory suggests that individuals who have spent significant time engaged in intellectually enriching activities (higher CR) are better able to withstand LTM impairment despite neurological injury. The cognitive mechanisms

Dissociations and interactions between attention guidance from negative templates maintained in visual working memory and long-term memory.

Visual attention can be guided away from objects known to be irrelevant to the current task. These negative templates (specifying distractor features) can be maintained in visual working memory (VWM) and in long-term memory (LTM). LTM-based negative templates allow for direct suppression of to-be-avoided feature values, observable in the earliest selective operations during search (i.e., implemented proactively). However, there is mixed evidence regarding whether VWM-based negative templates are likewise implemented directly and proactively. Here, we contrasted LTM- and VWM-based negative guid

Effects of Multisession Prefrontal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Long-term Memory and Working Memory in Older Adults.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive form of electrical brain stimulation popularly used to augment the effects of working memory (WM) training. Although success has been mixed, some studies report enhancements in WM performance persisting days, weeks, or even months that are actually more reminiscent of consolidation effects typically observed in the long-term memory (LTM) domain, rather than WM improvements per se. Although tDCS has been often reported to enhance both WM and LTM, these effects have never been directly compared within the same study. However, given

Epilepsy surgery within the temporal lobe and its short-term and long-term effects on memory.

In patients with pharmacologically intractable, complex-partial seizures, surgical excision of the involved temporal lobe may have significant therapeutic benefit. Resection of mesial structures of the temporal lobes, however, entails a significant risk of decreased memory function. Recent advances in the assessment of memory changes following temporal lobectomy surgery emphasize the complexity of subjective ratings of memory functioning in this population. Neuroimaging tools useful in the diagnostic evaluation of epilepsy surgical candidates have now been shown to be useful in predicting memo

Memory functioning in children with reading disabilities and/or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder: a clinical investigation of their working memory and long-term memory functioning.

We examined memory functioning in children with reading disabilities (RD), Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and RD/ADHD using a clinic sample with a clinical instrument: the Children's Memory Scale, enhancing its generalizability. Participants included 23 children with RD, 30 with ADHD, 30 with RD/ADHD, and 30 controls. Children with RD presented with reduced verbal short-term memory (STM) but intact visual STM, central executive (CE), and long-term memory (LTM) functioning. Their deficit in STM appeared specific to tasks requiring phonetic coding of material. Children with ADH

Hallucinating the past: a case of spontaneous and involuntary recall of long-term memories: perspectives on the hemispheric organization of visual memory.

This paper presents the unique case of a patient who developed palinopsias and formed visual hallucinations, representing spontaneous recall of memories from a discrete 10-year time period. The visual phenomena began shortly after the initiation of prophylactic whole-brain radiation therapy, following the removal of a metastatic adenocarcinoma in the region of the right cuneus. The most striking feature of this patient's hallucinations is the composition: memories from a discrete 10-year time period from about 30 years ago. This case provides further evidence to support the theory of a contral

Octopamine signaling from clock neurons plays dual roles in Drosophila long-term memory.

Circadian clock genes are best known for regulating circadian rhythms, but they also play crucial roles in memory processes. This suggests that memory is modulated by neural networks containing clock neurons, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In Drosophila melanogaster, approximately 240 clock neurons are grouped into at least eight distinct clusters. Among them, the dorsal-lateral neurons (LNds) are required for maintaining long-term memory (LTM). In contrast, the neuropeptide Pigment-dispersing factor (Pdf), expressed in both small and large ventral-lateral neurons (s-LNvs a

Who is at risk of long-term subjective memory impairment after electroconvulsive therapy?

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for depression with potential transient cognitive side effects. However, subjective memory impairment can extend over a long period after ECT. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess potential risk factors for long-term subjective memory impairment 6 months after ECT and to explore if the associations are mediated by depressive symptoms. METHODS: This registry-based study used the Swedish National Quality Register for ECT and other national registers. Long-term subjective memory worsening was defined as a minimum 2-step wor

Long-term verbal memory deficit and associated hippocampal alterations in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is a genetic disease associated with an increased risk for schizophrenia and a specific cognitive profile. In this paper, we challenge the current view of spared verbal memory in 22q11.2DS by investigating verbal memory consolidation processes over an extended time span to further qualify the neuropsychological profile. Our hypotheses are based on brain anomalies of the medial temporal lobes consistently reported in this syndrome.Eighty-four participants (45 with 22q11.2DS), aged 8-24 years old, completed a verbal episodic memory task to investi

Long-term administration of excess zinc impairs learning and memory in aged mice.

Zinc (Zn) is an essential element, but excess amounts are known to cause neurotoxic effects. The risk of excessive Zn intake is increased by supplementing food intake with dietary supplements. Ageing affects many cellular processes that predispose individuals to neurodegeneration. Indeed, the prevalence of senile dementia such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and vascular-type dementia increases with age. As such, we investigated the effects of long-term exposure to excess Zn on learning and memory in aged mice. ICR-JCL female mice (aged 26 weeks) were administered 0, 200, or 500 p

Visual recognition memory, manifested as long-term habituation, requires synaptic plasticity in V1.

Familiarity with stimuli that bring neither reward nor punishment, manifested through behavioral habituation, enables organisms to detect novelty and devote cognition to important elements of the environment. Here we describe in mice a form of long-term behavioral habituation to visual grating stimuli that is selective for stimulus orientation. Orientation-selective habituation (OSH) can be observed both in exploratory behavior in an open arena and in a stereotyped motor response to visual stimuli in head-restrained mice. We found that the latter behavioral response, termed a 'vidget', require

CD4+ Resident Memory T Cells Mediate Long-Term Local Skin Immune Memory of Contact Hypersensitivity in BALB/c Mice.

In allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and contact hypersensitivity (CHS), the healed skin shows greater swelling than the naïve skin in the same individual upon re-exposure to the same hapten. This "local skin memory" (LSM) in healed skin was maintained for a prolonged period of time and mediated by skin CD8+-resident memory T (TRM) cells in C57BL/6 mice. However, the number of CD4+ T cells is elevated in ACD-healed human skin, and the contribution of CD4+ TRM cells to the formation of LSM currently remains unclear. We herein demonstrated that immediately after CHS subsided, the healed skin in

Long-term histone lactylation connects metabolic and epigenetic rewiring in innate immune memory.

Trained immunity, a de facto innate immune memory characterized by enhanced responsiveness to future challenges, is underpinned by epigenetic and metabolic rewiring. In individuals vaccinated with Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG), lactate release was associated with enhanced cytokine responsiveness upon restimulation. Trained monocytes/macrophages are characterized by lactylation of histone H3 at lysine residue 18(H3K18la), mainly at distal regulatory regions. Histone lactylation was positively associated with active chromatin and gene transcription, persisted after the elimination of the trainin

Long-term high-altitude exposure influences task-related representations in visual working memory.

OBJECTIVE: Human working memory is impaired when individuals are exposed to high altitudes, however, whether the capacity of visual working memory is affected remains unclear. This study combined a lateralized change detection task and event-related potentials analysis to explore changes in visual working memory capacity among individuals who emigrated from a low-altitude environment to Tibet (a high-altitude environment). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-five college students were recruited from Tibet University as the high-altitude (HA) group, and thirty-six low-altitude (LA) students were enr

Blast-induced hearing loss suppresses hippocampal neurogenesis and disrupts long term spatial memory.

Acoustic information transduced by cochlear hair cells is continuously relayed from the auditory pathway to other sensory, motor, emotional and cognitive centers in the central nervous system. Human epidemiological studies have suggested that hearing loss is a risk factor for dementia and cognitive decline, but the mechanisms contributing to these memory and cognitive impairments are poorly understood. To explore these issues in a controlled experimental setting, we exposed adult rats to a series of intense blast wave exposures that significantly reduced the neural output of the cochlea. Sever
