Mentalizing as a Mechanism of Change in the Therapy of Conduct Disorder. A Controlled Case Study This controlled case study is dedicated to mentalizing as a mechanism of change in the course of a mentalization-based therapy for the treatment of conduct disorder. Following an introduction to conduct, oppositional defiant disorder and the concept of mentalizing, the case study of a 17-year-old male patient is presented. The patient's mentalizing is measured with the Reflective Functioning Scale and assessed prior to and after treatment as well as in therapy sessions at three time points through …

Psychological treatment for hoarding problems has historically been associated with poor outcomes. When treated as a subgroup of obsessive-compulsive disorder, individuals with hoarding beliefs were less likely to respond to treatment than individuals exhibiting other obsessive-compulsive beliefs and behaviours. When treated as its own disorder using cognitive behavioural therapy, individuals report approximately 25% improvement in symptoms on average. However, less than a third of people experience clinically meaningful change. Further, changes in functioning and quality of life are not routi

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has emerged as a major clinical and societal challenge since its mid-twentieth-century conceptualization. This paper addresses four persistent obstacles to effective care: diagnostic complexity, interpersonal dysfunction and risk behaviors, high societal burden, and pervasive stigma. We argue that despite recent critiques, many of which propose replacing the diagnosis with trauma-related formulations, BPD remains a valid, coherent, and clinically indispensable construct. Misdiagnosis contributes to iatrogenic harm, while accurate diagnosis enables targeted

Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-supported, relationally focused treatment for people living with depression and other psychiatric disorders in the context of stressful life events. Mentalizing, also relationally focused, promotes the ability to perceive, understand, and interpret human behavior in terms of intentional mental states of others or oneself, in order to support social leaning. IPT and mentalization-based treatments (MBT) both seek to improve interpersonal effectiveness, albeit with different emphases in the therapeutic process, with IPT promoting interpersonal prob

OBJECTIVE: Foster care services in Denmark, as in many other countries, face challenges with recruitment, assessment, and retention of foster families. It is essential to understand how foster parents understand their role and how this might relate to child outcomes. This paper develops a typology of foster parent types through an ideal-type analysis of interviews with foster parents.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The sample consist of 14 Danish foster parents who had participated in a quasi-randomized trial exploring the effects of Mentalization Based Therapy for foster families.
METHODS: Foste

Chronic pain is usually a complex disorder with possible indications for an impairment at the personality functioning level. Guidelines recommend a multiprofessional interdisciplinary treatment approach. Based on the alternative model of personality disorders of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5) and the International Classification of Diseases, eleventh revision (ICD-11), an integrative manual was designed to exactly fit the interdisciplinary multimodal treatment of patients of the day clinic for pain at the orthopedic clinic of the University Hos

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a leading cause of disability worldwide and contributes significantly to the global burden of disease. Recent data show an increasing prevalence of treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit MDD as a comorbidity and it is often resistant to conventional treatments. ASD determines emotional dysregulation and a reduced ability to understand mental states (mentalization). These features can lead to suicidal ideation and/or behavior. Intranasal esketamine may offer a novel therapeutic option for

Over the past decades mental health services around the world are faced with a high number of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) which has resulted in a particular emphasis on research for specialist treatments for this class of disorders. At least 5 psychotherapeutic models are based on evidence from clinical trials that support their effectiveness. In this review we present the latest research evidence as well as a summary of the basic characteristics of Transference-Focused Psychotherapy and Mentalization Based Treatment, which are not yet widely used in Greece. BACKGROUND: A common aspect of evidence-based treatments for people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) is pedagogical interventions and formats. In mentalization-based treatment (MBT) the introductory course has a clear pedagogical format, but a pedagogical stance is not otherwise defined.
METHODS: Treatment integrity was quantitatively assessed in a sample of 346 individual MBT sessions. Nine group sessions and 24 individual MBT sessions were qualitatively subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA).
RESULTS: The dominating intervention type was MBT Item 16-therapist

In recent years, stress-monitoring innovations using wearable technology have entered the market. One innovation is biocueing, a process where patients receive real-time feedback on passive monitoring of significant changes in their physiological data, such as (additional) heart rate, heart rate variability or skin conductance. This technology offers potential for patients with borderline personality disorder, as they often report severe stress, difficulties in emotion regulation and low levels of emotional- and body awareness. Yet, currently there is no clear direction on when and how to fit

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common disorder in general and clinical populations and is related to potentially severe medical and socio-professional consequences. Treatment of BPD is based on evidence-based psychotherapies (such as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Mentalization-Based Therapy, Schema-Focused Therapy or Transference Focused Psychotherapy), which have been shown effective but are poorly available in France. Pharmacological treatments, which are more easily available, are not effective in treating symptoms of the disorder but can be useful in management of comorbiditi…

BACKGROUND: The psychiatrization of borderline personality disorder (BPD) has expanded beyond clinical contexts into identity formation, interpersonal regulation, and digital self-presentation. For individuals with BPD-whose psychopathology centrally involves identity diffusion-the diagnostic label may function not only as an explanatory framework but also as a stabilizing, defensive, or performative identity resource, particularly within online environments.
OBJECTIVES: This article aims to examine how individuals with BPD integrate psychiatric diagnosis into their self-concept, to identify

We examined the effectiveness of psychotherapies for adult Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in a multilevel meta-analysis, including all trial types (PROSPERO ID: CRD42020111351). We tested several predictors, including trial- and outcome type (continuous or dichotomous), setting, BPD symptom domain and mean age. We included 87 studies (N = 5881) from searches between 2013 and 2019 in four databases. We controlled for differing treatment lengths and a logarithmic relationship between treatment duration and effectiveness. Sensitivity analyses were conducted by excluding outliers and by pri
