Unusual leiomyomatous hamartoma of the hard palate: a case report.

Harmartomas of the head and neck are common lesions, often taking the form of melanocytic nevi or vascular malformations such as hemangiomas … leiomyomatous hamartoma and could be distinguished from a smooth-muscle tumor, teratoma, and benign mesenchymoma by virtue of the clinical and histopathologic features. No recurrence has been seen after excision.

[Hyperthermia in bone and soft tissue tumors].

Local response of hyperthermia for soft tissue and bone tumors was investigated. Ten tumors were superficial tumors and 16 were deep seated tumors; 9 tumors were malignant fibrous histiocytoma, 5 were liposarcoma, 4 were neurogenic and 3 were myogenic sarcoma. The other five tumors were an angiosarcoma, a malignant mesenchymoma, an Ewing's sarcoma, a chordoma and an osteosarcoma. Some 23 tumors were heated in combination with radiation therapy, and 3 were combined with arterial infusion of ADR. Four of 10 superficial tumors disappeared (CR), and, 2 of 10 signified PR. Only one of 16 deep seate…

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors: radiological aspects and suggested imaging pathway.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of soft tissue or bone origin that can give rise to a challenge in diagnostic imaging. These tumors are frequently associated with tumor-induced osteomalacia, also called oncogenic osteomalacia, which is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by ectopic secretion of fibroblast growth factor 23, a hormone that regulates serum phosphate level. PMTs show polymorphic features on both radiological findings and histological examination, causing problems in diagnosis owing to their similarity with other mesenchymal tumors. Th

Primary malignant ectomesenchymoma of the orbit.

Malignant ectomesenchymoma is a rare soft tissue tumor of the childhood believed to arise from a remnant of pluripotential migratory neural crest cell (ectomesenchym) and composed of both a mesenchymal element (most often embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma) and a neuroectodermal element (ganglioneuroma, schwanomma neuroblastoma or melanocytic cells). Reported sites of origin are the abdomen, perineum or scrotum, the extremities, the middle ear, nasopharynx, face, and neck. Herein we report a new case of an orbital ectomesenchymoma studied by means of histochemistry and immunohistochemistry in order to…

Primary intracranial malignant ectomesenchymoma in an adult: Report of a rare case and review of the literature.

Malignant ectomesenchymoma (MEM) is an exceedingly rare rapidly progressing tumor of soft tissues of the central nervous system, believed to be derived from neural crest cells. The majority of cases have been observed in young children or adolescents. So far only 11 patients with intracranial manifestations (with confirmed clinicopathological data) have been documented. We report the first case of adult intracranial MEM in a 54-year-old man who presented with a 4 months history of headache and weakness of right side of the body. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a homogenously enhanced dural-b…

[Borderline and malignant mesenchymal tumors of the abdomen].

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue sarcomas are most common mesenchymal malignancies in the abdomen. Their radiologic features are often unspecific and establishing a differential diagnosis to other pathologies can be difficult. OBJECTIVES: This review presents a selection of the most common mesenchymal abdominal tumors and their imaging characteristics, as well as the associated differential diagnoses. Knowledge of fundamental pathologic, anatomic and radiologic features of these malignancies is crucial for the differential diagnosis and key in clinical decision making and subsequent selection of an ap

Mesenchymal Nonmeningothelial Tumors of the CNS: Evolving Molecular Landscape and Implications for Neuroradiologists.

The World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Central Nervous System, 5th edition (WHO CNS5) significantly revised the terminology and diagnostic criteria of "mesenchymal nonmeningothelial" tumors of CNS to better align with the classification of these soft tissue tumors outside the CNS. The CNS chapter only covers the entities with distinct histologic or molecular characteristics that occur exclusively or primarily in the CNS. These tumors usually arise from the meninges and are rarely intraparenchymal in origin, mainly in the supratentorial compartment. These tumors are group

Mesenchymal tumor-induced Fanconi syndrome: A novel classification of Fanconi syndrome.

RATIONALE: Fanconi syndrome (FS) caused by mesenchymal tumors is rarely reported, and these tumors are usually small and difficult to detect. However, if found and removed, the FS can be cured. PATIENT CONCERNS: Five patients were included in this study, and their clinical features, treatments, and prognoses of tumor-induced FS were reviewed and summarized. DIAGNOSES: Mesenchymal tumor-induced FS was diagnosed based on laboratory, imaging, and pathological examinations. INTERVENTIONS: We performed tumor resection surgery and administered a symptomatic treatment regimen that included neutral

Ectomesenchymal Chondromyxoid Tumor of the Anterior Tongue: A Case Image.

Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor (ECT) is a rare soft tissue tumor with peculiar histogenesis, exhibiting a predilection for the dorsum of the tongue. Molecular evidence suggests that it may originate from the migration of ectomesenchymal pluripotent cells from the neural crest to the tongue, where these cells may eventually proliferate and undergo myxoid and chondroid differentiation. This article illustrates a case of a 16-year-old female patient who presented with a nodule on the dorsum of her tongue, which had been present for four years. Surgical excision was performed, and histopathol

Germ cell, mesenchymal, and thymic tumors of the mediastinum.

Germ cell, mesenchymal, and thymic tumors of the mediastinum are an uncommon and heterogeneous group of neoplasms. Together they account for less than 25% of mediastinal tumors in childhood. The majority of these tumors are found in the anterior and superior mediastinum, but germ cell tumors and mesenchymal tumors may be located in all compartments. They share a broad range of histological subtypes and clinical behavior, tendency to be large in size, and a requirement for complete surgical excision as the major requirement for successful therapy.

Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas: a clinicopathological review.

One case of embryonal paratesticular sarcoma and 2 cases of leiomyosarcomas are reported. The 13-year-old boy with embryonal sarcoma is well after an orchiectomy and high ligation of the spermatic cord followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. A 66-year-old man has been doing well after orchiectomy and hemiscrotectomy for a paratesticular leiomyosarcoma. The third patient had a highly pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma and died 2 months postoperatively. The clinical and histological diagnosis of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas is reviewed and the various therapeutic approaches to

A mixed mesenchymal sarcoma in the soft palate of a dog: light and electron microscopic findings.

Soft tissue tumors containing a mixture of neoplastic fibrous tissue, cartilage, and bone have previously been classified as extraskeletal osteosarcomas in the dog. These tumors are often poorly differentiated, contain multiple neoplastic cell types, and might be more appropriately called mixed mesenchymal sarcomas. The present neoplasm caused clinical signs of stridorous respiration and dysphagia in a four and one-half year old dog. Four neoplastic cell types were demonstrated by light and electron microscopy.
