The incidence and relationship of intestinal metaplasia of the gastric antrum and gastric metaplasia of the first part of the duodenum were studied in endoscopic biopsies from 120 patients with nonulcer dyspepsia. Squamous metaplasia arising in nonneoplastic breast parenchyma is reportedly rare. We present a unique case which occurred following severe blunt trauma to the right breast of a 59-yr-old woman. The lesion contained sheets of squamous cells with a lobular growth pattern, bland cytology with few mitoses, and keratin and keratohyalin granules. AIMS: Metaplastic alterations of oxyntic mucosa in autoimmune gastritis (AIG) remain under investigation. This study aimed to characterize pyloric gland-like and intestinal metaplasia (IM) in AIG and assess their origin and prognostic significance.

Osseous metaplasia is defined as the formation of lamellar bone inside soft tissue structures where bone normally does not exist. It results from the transformation of non-osseous connective tissue into mature bone. This condition is rare in the oral and maxillofacial region. Fibrolipomas are characterised by fat lobules embedded in perivascular oval fibrocytes and thick bundles of collagen. Oncocytic metaplasia of the nasopharynx is an exceptional lesion which exact etiopathogenesis, although largely discussed, still remains controversial. A case of melanin pigmented oncocytic metaplasia is reported. A 62-year-old man presented with a history of discomfort of the ear of a 2 weeks' duration. Nasoscopic examination revealed a black nodule of about 5mm at the left Eustachian opening, and several black spots were discovered around the bilateral torus tubarius. The nodule was biopsied to determine the histology. Microscopically, there were oncocytic cells with abundant pigmented granules showing glandular pattern. Such a pigmented variant of benign oncocytic lesion is very rare.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal metaplasia occurs in the esophagus as a consequence of gastroesophageal reflux disease and in the stomach secondary to H. pylori infection. The etiology of intestinal metaplasia limited to the gastroesophageal junction or cardia (CIM) is disputed. Multiple biopsies were taken from the duodenum of 100 patients (46 active duodenal ulcer, 14 healed duodenal ulcer, 40 control subjects) to detect duodenitis, gastric metaplasia and Helicobacter pylori (Hp). This is a case report of a 67-year-old woman who had a mucinous adenocarcinoma of the urethra: she died 3 years after the clinical symptoms started owing to progression of the tumor. The tumor developed from a glandular metaplasia, which has to be regarded as a premalignant lesion. Problems of the diagnosis, including the differential diagnosis, are discussed.
