The antimicrobial susceptibility test results of the 1979-1981 College of American Pathologists (CAP) Microbiology Surveys are summarized for the disk diffusion and dilution test methods. Improved interpretive accuracy (97.5%) was detected for the Special Bacteriology participants compared with those reported for 1972 and 1977-1978. The performance accuracy rates for the Comprehensive and Basic Surveys subscribers was 95.8% and 93.7%, respectively (all surveys accuracy rates was 95.2% from 196,775 responses). The dilution methods were graded since 1980 and showed an acceptable or good performa

Cefuroxime, a new parenteral cephalosporin was compared with cephalothin by broth microdilution susceptibility testing against 5,887 routine clinical bacterial isolates in four large clinical laboratories. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of cefuroxime against the Enterobacteriaceae were consistently lower than those of cephalothin. This was most striking among the Enterobacter species, which were generally susceptible to cefuroxime (MIC </= 8 mug/ml), but resistant to cephalothin. Similar results occurred with Haemophilus species, Acinetobacter anitratus, meningococci, and Aeromon

Pesticides can have adverse effects on soil microorganisms, but they are underrepresented in the currently required OECD 216 test for environmental risk assessment of plant protection products (PPP). The guideline monitors soil microbial nitrogen transformation over 28 days, potentially missing long-term effects of persistent pesticides. Additionally, nitrate alone may be not sensitive enough to detect disruptions in microbial functions. We investigated whether functional gene analysis could provide a more sensitive bioindicator of pesticide impact. To compare this method with the standard tes

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary infections are common and potentially life-threatening in critically ill patients. Conventional microbiological tests (CMTs) often show limited sensitivity, particularly in the setting of prior antimicrobial exposure. Targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) has emerged as an alternative approach for broad pathogen detection; however, data describing pathogen spectrum, mixed infection patterns, and diagnostic performance in critically ill populations remain limited.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 217 critically ill patients with suspected pulmonary infectio

Considerable interest has been made in developing nonculture approaches to diagnosing fungal infections, as early diagnosis may guide appropriate treatment and prevent mortality. These approaches include detection of specific host immune responses to fungal antigens, and detection of specific macromolecular antigens using immunologic reagents. The detection of a specific host antibody response is attractive because such tests can be performed rapidly and do not require invasive sampling procedures. However, presence of host antibodies does not always correlate with presence of invasive disease

Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. abscessus (MABA) is refractory and sometimes fatal especially in an immunocompromised patient. Also, MABA-associated pneumothorax is an extremely rare complication. We report a case of MABA pulmonary infection complicated pneumothorax treated successfully. A 69-year-old Japanese female with immunosuppressed systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease experienced left-sided secondary spontaneous pneumothorax. MABA was detected in the pleural effusion and blood culture. Microbial sensitivity test showed the MABA was sensitive to only amikacin, sitafloxa

Broth microdilution and disk diffusion methods were used to test ciprofloxacin, clinafloxacin, fleroxacin, grepafloxacin, ofloxacin, PD131628, sparfloxacin, and trovafloxacin against Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates. With each fluroquinolone tested, there was a striking unimodal population. With the exception of fleroxacin, over 96% of pneumococci tested were inhibited by each drug's modal MIC +/-1 twofold concentration. Over 92% of pneumococci produced inhibitory zone diameters equal to the mode +/-4 mm for each drug. For most fluoroquinolones, the interpretive criteria approved or proposed

The rifamycins are broad-spectrum antibiotics that are primarily utilized to treat infections caused by mycobacteria, including tuberculosis. Interestingly, various species of bacteria are known to contain an enzyme called Arr that catalyzes ADP-ribosylation of rifamycin antibiotics as a mechanism of resistance. Here, we study Arr modulation in relevant Gram-positive and -negative species. We show that a C-terminal truncation of Arr (ArrC), encoded in the genome of Mycobacterium smegmatis, activates Arr-mediated rifamycin modification. Through structural comparisons of mycobacterial Arr and hu

Antibiotics play a key role in the prevention and treatment of bacterial diseases for human and animals. The widespread use of antibiotics results in bacterial exposure to the concentrations that are lower than the MIC (that is, sub-inhibitory concentration (sub-MIC)) in the environment, humans, and livestock, which can lead to antibiotic resistance. In this review, we focus on the impact of sub-MIC antibiotics in bacterial virulence. This paper summarized the known relationships between sub-MIC antibiotics in the environment and bacterial virulence. Together, considering the impact of sub-MIC

Microorganisms are predominantly organized in biofilms, where cells live in dense communities and are more resistant to external stresses than are their planktonic counterparts. With in vitro experiments, the susceptibility of Candida albicans biofilms to a nonthermal plasma treatment (plasma source, kINPen09) in terms of growth, survival, and cell viability was investigated. C. albicans strain SC5314 (ATCC MYA-2876) was plasma treated for different time periods (30 s, 60 s, 120 s, 180 s, 300 s). The results of the experiments, encompassing CFU, fluorescence Live/Dead, and 2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4

The importance of environmental microorganisms in the emergence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance is an undeniable fact. However, cyanobacteria are not seen yet as putative players in the dynamic of environmental resistome, despite their ubiquity in water environments, where they are exposed to antibiotic pollution and in straight contact with native and pathogenic bacteria harboring antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). In this work we evaluated the susceptibility of 8 strains of Planktothrix agardhii (from surface freshwaters reservoirs) and 8 strains of Planktothrix mougeotii (from a

INTRODUCTION: A rapid growth of the antibiotic resistance among Neisseria gonorrhoeae strains was recently observed in many countries. The common resistance or decreased susceptibility to penicillin, tetracyclines, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin as well as emergence of the first strains resistant to ceftriakson and cefixim is a cause of an anxiety worldwide. Spectinomycin may constitute an alternative therapy of gonorrhoea except of pharyngeal infection.
METHODS: The susceptibility to spectinomycin of 65 N. gonorrhoeae strains isolated in the second half of 2012 and the first half of 2013 in Der

A bacterial susceptibility test to 31 antibiotics was conducted on the 80 isolated Escherichia coli from the leachates of the landfills in two different operations: semi-aerobic (SL) and anaerobic (AL) landfills. The average population of E. coli from SL and AL leachates were 2.2 × 10(4) and 9.4 × 10(3)CFU/100ml, respectively. Between 80.8% and 87.5% of the E. coli isolated from both leachates as resistant to the tested antibiotics and high resistances were found to doxycycline (53.8-68.8%), cephalothin (57.5-61.3%), tetracycline (51.3-67.5%) and minocycline (37.5-46.3%). The percentages of is

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Beta haemolytic streptococci (BHS), especially group A are still highly susceptible to penicillin. One possible explanation for this could be reduced growth capability in penicillin resistant BHS mutants. The present study was therefore undertaken to analyze the growth rates of BHS with decreased susceptibility to penicillin.
METHODS: Serial passages in the medium with subinhibitory concentration of penicillin were done to induce resistance to this antibiotic in 12 clinical isolates of BHS serogroups A, B, C, and G. Both penicillin susceptible (parental) and variants

Antimicrobial resistance, including plasmid-mediated resistance, among the species of the Bacteroides fragilis group is well documented. An analysis of the in vitro susceptibility of B. fragilis group species referred between 1995 and 1996 as well as during a 7-year (1990 to 1996), prospective, multicenter survey of over 4,000 clinical isolates of B. fragilis group species was undertaken to review trends in the percent resistance to and geometric mean MICs of the antibiotics tested. There was a trend toward a decrease in the geometric mean MICs of most beta-lactam antibiotics, while the percen

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a common pathogen in children that in recent years has shown a progressive rise in resistance to the usual antibiotics and also to the new third generation cephalosporins. We report a review of Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated at our hospital from pediatrics patients in whom we observed an increased incidence of resistance to cefotaxime significantly related with the rise in resistance to penicillin. The resistance of penicillin-resistant strains to various antibiotics was analyzed and the following results were obtained: cefotaxime, 0% susceptible, 83% int

The in vitro antifungal activity of the new hydroxypyridone antimycotic rilopirox has been evaluated against 29 separate clinical isolates of Malassezia (M.) furfur obtained from patients with pityriasis versicolor, seborrhoeic dermatitis or dandruff. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of rilopirox were measured by the agar dilution technique and, in comparison, by a recently described microdilution method with colorimetric detection of the MIC end points. Rilopirox was found to be able to inhibit growth of all clinical yeast isolates. For the investigated M. furfur strains MIC values fr

A total of 1,104 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae were isolated from hospitalized patients (75.5%) and from colonization sites at the Public Health Institute (24.5%) during the last 4 years (1989-1993). Penicillin resistance (defined as MIC > or = 0.1 microgram/liter) was found to increase in time: 4.6% in 1989, 4.9% in 1990, 6.4% in 1991, 11.3% in 1992, and 17% in 1993. In 1992, 0.8% of the strains had penicillin MIC = 2 mg/liter. Increase in penicillin resistance was also evident among invasive strains [blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), pleura]: 2/92 isolates from 1989-1992 (2.3%) were pe
