Deficiency of macro- and micronutrients induced by Lentinula edodes.

Mushroom Lentinula edodes has been widely studied therapeutically. However, there is no data regarding its daily intake level safety. Since L. edodes has many active compounds known to bind to metals, we evaluated macro and micronutrients in liver and kidney of healthy rats after subchronic exposure to L. edodes. Rats were divided into four groups, receiving water and L. edodes at 100, 400 and 800 mg/kg/day. The treatment lasted 30 days. Essential elements (Zn, Cu, Mg, Fe, Mn, Se, Co, Mo, and Li) were analyzed in an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. Our results demonstrated a signi…

Micronutrients in the treatment of stunting and moderate malnutrition.

Linear growth retardation or stunting may occur with or without low weight-for-age, but in both cases stunted or moderately malnourished children are deficient in micronutrients. Pregnancy and the first 2 years are critical periods. Dietary deficiency of zinc, iron, calcium, and vitamin A are especially common and often occur together. Zinc is essential for adequate growth, and supplements have been shown to increase intrauterine femur length and to prevent stunting. However, in general, supplements which provide a mixture of micronutrients have been more successful in preventing stunting and …

The influence of micronutrients on oral and general health.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present clinical pilot study was to examine the influence of a combination of micronutrients on individuals with high stress experience. METHODS: 40 healthy students (28 female, 12 male) with a mean age of 27.1 ± 3.0 years, experiencing high examination stress, were chosen. After approval of the ethics commission, one group of students (n = 19) took a combination of micronutrients (Orthomol vital m/f) for three months, whereas other students (n = 21) served as control group. All participants underwent at the beginning and at the end of the trial a dental examination,…

[Topical problems of micronutrients deficiency in the Chuvash Republic].

Epidemiological surveys of the pattern of nutrition in the Chuvash Republic were conducted by the Department of Consumer Supervision of the Chuvash Republic to reveal the regional features of the levels of nutrients in a diet. To accomplish this goal, the authors developed an algorithm for studying the organized and unorganized collectives. A regional dietary trace element database was set up and the endemic problems of an area were specified. Significant dietary selenium deficiency and moderate iron and manganese deficiencies were cardinal problems in the population's nutrition in the Chuvash

[Role of antioxidants and other micronutrients in stroke prevention].

Introduction: stroke is a medical emergency caused by a disruption of cerebral blood flow (as a consequence of obstruction or hemorrhage) that temporarily or permanently alters the function of a specific brain region. Currently, scientific evidence highlights oxidative stress as a critical mediator in the pathophysiology of stroke, with an inverse association between dietary antioxidant capacity and stroke risk. Objective: to understand the role of antioxidants and other micronutrients in stroke prevention. Methods: literature review of the scientific literature related to the topic. Results: …

Micronutrients, the gut microbiota, and infection susceptibility in infants.

Micronutrient deficiencies are common during infancy, particularly in settings with a high burden of infectious diseases. At the same time, the developing infant gut microbiota is a key determinant of susceptibility to infection from both resident pathobionts and incoming enteric pathogens. Recent human and experimental studies suggest that micronutrients regulate this developing microbial ecosystem in a highly context-dependent manner, with effects varying according to developmental stage, nutritional status, intestinal location, and environmental exposure. In this review, we synthesise curre…

NEURAL TUBE DEFECTS AND MICRONUTRIENTS DEFICIENCY PREVALENCE IN GEORGIA.

Until 2015, systematic statistical data on micronutrient deficiency was not available in Georgia, to provide developing national strategy. In the same year, the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health of Georgia (NCDC) in collaboration with the USA CDC launched the project "Strengthening surveillance of micronutrient deficiency in Georgia". In 2015 we did choose sentinel surveillance approach. For setting nutrition surveillance system 8 sentinel sites (2 sites in each region/children and pregnant health facilities) in four regions of Georgia (Tbilisi, Kakheti, Achara, and Samegre

The Role of Micronutrients in Alopecia Areata: A Review.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a common, non-scarring form of hair loss caused by immune-mediated attack of the hair follicle. As with other immune-mediated diseases, a complex interplay between environment and genetics is thought to lead to the development of AA. Deficiency of micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals may represent a modifiable risk factor associated with development of AA. Given the role of these micronutrients in normal hair follicle development and in immune cell function, a growing number of investigations have sought to determine whether serum levels of these nutrients might…

Micronutrients in pregnancy in low- and middle-income countries.

Pregnancy is one of the more important periods in life when increased micronutrients, and macronutrients are most needed by the body; both for the health and well-being of the mother and for the growing foetus and newborn child. This brief review aims to identify the micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) likely to be deficient in women of reproductive age in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC), especially during pregnancy, and the impact of such deficiencies. A global prevalence of some two billion people at risk of micronutrient deficiencies, and multiple micronutrient deficiencies of ma…

Professional sport activity and micronutrients: effects on bone mass.

Osteoporosis is the most prevalent metabolic bone disease among developed countries. Although bone mass and density are certainly determined by various concurrent factors such as genetics, hormones, life-style and the environment, and although the genetic program has a critical role in growth and in bone peak development, for their realization an adequate nutritional intake of nutrients and regular exercise are always necessary and may represent a way to prevent osteoporosis and fractures. Exercise and especially high-impact sport activity during growth and adolescence increases bone mineral d

Micronutrients and the premenstrual syndrome: the case for calcium.

Premenstrual syndrome afflicts millions of premenopausal women and has been described as one of the most common disorders in women. Research over the past few years suggests that a variety of nutrients may have an important role in the phase related mood and behavioral disturbances of the premenstrual syndrome. There is scientific evidence, at least for a few of these micronutrients, specifically calcium and vitamin D, supporting cyclic fluctuations during the menstrual cycle that may help explain some features of PMS. Ovarian hormones influence calcium, magnesium and vitamin D metabolism. Est…

Serum micronutrients in relation to pre-cancerous gastric lesions.

Serum levels of retinol, beta-carotene, ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, selenium, ferritin, copper, and zinc were assayed for approximately 600 adults aged 35 to 64 with pre-cancerous gastric lesions in an area of China with one of the world's highest rates of stomach cancer. Previous studies have shown that the cancers generally are preceded by chronic atropic gastritis (CAG), intestinal metaplasia (IM) and dysplasia. Concentrations of beta-carotene and ascorbic acid were significantly lower among individuals with IM than among those whose most severe lesion was superficial gastritis or CAG.

The epidemiology of global micronutrient deficiencies.

Micronutrients are essential to sustain life and for optimal physiological function. Widespread global micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs) exist, with pregnant women and their children under 5 years at the highest risk. Iron, iodine, folate, vitamin A, and zinc deficiencies are the most widespread MNDs, and all these MNDs are common contributors to poor growth, intellectual impairments, perinatal complications, and increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency is the most common MND worldwide and leads to microcytic anemia, decreased capacity for work, as well as impaired immune and…
