Miliaria crystallina (MC) is a self-limiting, superficial obstruction of the eccrine sweat ducts with subsequent extravasation of sweat, resulting in rapidly surfacing, tiny, clear, noninflammatory vesicles. The disease is seen frequently in hot, humid, tropical climates and in the neonatal period, but congenital occurrence is rare. We report a case of congenital MC in a baby born to a mother with chorioamnionitis.

BACKGROUND: The term "miliaria" is used to describe a group of highly transient skin disorders in the newborn characterized by eccrine duct obstruction and the passage of sweat into the epidermis and papillary dermis. This rash in the susceptible skin of the neonate is brought on by heat and confined environments. Our paper reports several episodes of pustular miliaria rubra associated with salt loss crises in a newborn with systemic pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1b (PHA).
OBSERVATION: Since the first days of life, the child presented severe and diffuse miliaria comprising many disseminated pu…

IMPORTANCE: In 1947, Sulzberger and colleagues published a micrograph of a blocked acrosyringium in a patient with atopic dermatitis (AD), b … The study also confirmed the findings by earlier investigators about the blockage of sweat ducts in miliaria, showing eosinophilic material in the ducts that was positive for periodic acid-Schiff. Previous researchers also observed bacteria in the blockages, and this study demonstrated the same findings in AD, rather than miliaria.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that cutaneous bacteria, particularly coagulase-negative staphylococci, play a role in the pathogenesis of miliaria. An accumulation of periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive material has been described as blocking the sweat duct in miliaria. Furthermore, a PAS-positive extracellular polysaccharide substance (EPS) has been identified as a product of some strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the relative ability of various species of coagulase-negative staphylococci to induce miliaria with particular reference to the potential …

Miliaria is a disorder of the eccrine sweat glands which occurs in conditions of increased heat and humidity. It can be associated with persistent febrile states as well as with certain drugs. We presented a 40 year-old female with myelodysplastic syndrome and progression to acute myelogenous leukemia who was admitted to the hospital for chemotherapy induction. The patient was treated with idarubicin and cytarabine. She became pancytopenic and developed neutropenic fever and was started on vancomycin and cefepime, but was persistently febrile with night sweats. Five days into her fevers, she d…

Miliaria is a self-limiting cutaneous disease that may develop from skin exposure to humid climates, occlusion, or raised temperatures, forming groups of 1-3-mm-sized sweat-filled vesicles in the epidermis due to obstruction of the eccrine sweat duct. Here, we describe the first case of extensive bullous miliaria reported in a 47-year-old female with no comorbidities or significant medical history.

Scarlet fever typically presents with distinctive erythematous papular rash following pharyngitis. Atypical forms may develop, making the diagnosis difficult. We present the case of a girl with fever, and unusual vesicular skin eruption (miliaria scarlatinosa) preceded by a skin infection, without mucosal changes. Leukocyte count, C-reactive protein, and antistreptolysin O-titer were elevated. Bacteriological swabs of the skin injury revealed Streptococcus pyogenes. Histopathology was compatible with scarlet fever exanthema. Intramuscular penicillin and topical wound care induced complete remi…

The Bazex-Dupré-Christol syndrome (BDC syndrome) is a rare X-chromosomal dominantly inherited genodermatosis. Major symptoms are (1) follicular atrophoderma, (2) congenital hypotrichosis, and (3) multiple basal cell carcinomas, the latter appearing in the second or third decade. More variably associated findings are milia, hypohidrosis, disorders of cornification, hyperflexibility of joints, and skeletal abnormalities. A 2.5-year-old Turkish girl presented with early signs of BDC syndrome in the form of milia, follicular atrophoderma on the face and hands, and hypotrichosis. Accurate diagnosis

Twenty-four heat-acclimatized male volunteers were wrapped as previously described (Am. J. Physiol. 239 (Regulatory Integrative Comp. Physiol. 8): R226-R232, 1980) but to produce miliaria rubra (heat rash) in specific regions of the body. Three experimental rash groups were involved: 1) the torso (17% total skin surface rashed, n = 6), 2) torso and arms (38%, n = 8), or 3) legs (41%, n = 6), while four subjects served as controls. All subjects were reexposed to walking in the heat on the 7th day after unwrapping, and again 14, 21, and 28 days after unwrapping. When compared to responses for th…
