Performance-based payment models and value-based health care: a semi-systematic review through theoretical lenses.

OBJECTIVES: To identify and critically examine the theoretical lenses applied in the literature to conceptualize performance-based and value-based payment models, and to analyze how these frameworks explain their behavioral, organizational, and system-level effects. METHODS: A semi-systematic review was conducted in July 2025 across Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, LILACS, and CINAHL, using a structured search strategy and transparent selection procedures following PRISMA 2020 reporting principles. Eligible empirical and theoretical studies on value- or performance-based payment were e

Organizational resilience and primary care nurses' work conditions and well-being: a multilevel empirical study in China.

Resilience is crucial for a health system to better prevent and respond to public health threats and provide high-quality services. Despite the growing interest in the concept of resilience in health care, however, there is little empirical evidence of the impact of organizational resilience, especially in primary care settings. As the largest professional group in primary care, primary care nurses are taking more and more responsibilities during their daily practice, which influences both their work conditions and well-being. This study aims to examine the association between organizational r

The tectonic plates are shifting: cultural change vs. mural dyslexia.

In response to a rapidly changing healthcare marketplace, a variety of new business models have arisen, including new specialties (hospitalists), selective care (concierge medicine), and joint ventures (ambulatory surgical centers, specialty hospitals), some with hospitals and others with independent vendors. Since both hospitals and physicians are feeling the squeeze of rising expenses, burdensome regulations, heightened consumer expectations, and stagnant or decreasing reimbursement, the response to global economic competition and the need to improve clinical and financial outcomes can bring

Signaling Organizational Artificial Intelligence Adoption in Recruitment Materials: Role of Perceived Innovation Ability in Organizational Attractiveness.

Although previous studies have examined factors influencing organizational appeal, how AI-adoption signals influence prospective applicants remains unclear. Building on signaling theory, this study explores whether, when, and how organizations' AI-adoption signals enhance their attractiveness to potential applicants. Two experiments were conducted to test the hypothesized model. Study 1 (N = 145) employed a scenario-based design to compare organizational attractiveness between AI-adoption signal and no-signal conditions, confirming that AI-adoption signals are significantly positively associat

Leadership as decision architecture: an organizational framework for understanding and eliminating physical restraint in human services.

Physical restraint persists at high rates in human services settings supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), even within organizations that have formally adopted positive behavior support (PBS) frameworks and invested substantially in staff training. This perspective article introduces the Staff Decision Ecology Model, a decision ecology account of physical restraint, which conceptualizes restraint as a context-dependent, staff-mediated decision shaped by nested individual, environmental, and organizational variables, and argues that leadership functions

The role of organizational trust in safety climate's influence on organizational outcomes.

Based on elements of social exchange theory and other conceptualizations of trust, a model was developed situating organizational trust as a central component to the relationship that safety climate has with organizational outcomes. Specifically, the model specified that two facets of safety climate--upward safety communication and management attitudes toward safety--would be positively related to organizational trust. Increased levels of trust would then predict increased motivation to engage in safe job-related behaviors, increased job satisfaction, and decreased turnover intentions. Another

Strategic groups in health care: a literature review.

The purpose of this study is to review the literature that discusses the relationship between strategic group membership and performance in the nursing home industry. This literature review examines the relationship between organizational structure and performance in the nursing home industry. Results from these studies suggest industry stability of segmentation; limitation of strategic choice due to high mobility barriers (as represented by facility, staffing and location variables); quality is controlled by the existing combinations of industry regulation and market competition; and the exis

Diffusion of medications for opioid use disorder treatment in jail settings: a convergent mixed methods study of jail staff perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in jails varies by facility and across states. Organizational climate, including staff attitudes toward change and exposure to education, can influence perceptions of innovations like MOUD in jails. Using a mixed methods design, we aimed to understand the association between organizational climate and jail staff perceptions of MOUD. METHODS: Jail staff (n = 111) who operate MOUD programs in 6 Massachusetts jails completed surveys that included the Organizational Readiness for Implementing Change (ORIC) survey. Random eff

We Give a Shit: A Commentary on the Psychometric Properties of the Organizational Bullshit Perception Scale.

Organizational bullshit refers to workplace communication with no regard for the truth. An important step toward the empirical study of this ubiquitous phenomenon was the development and validation of the organizational bullshit perception scale (OBPS; Ferreira et al., 2022). In two studies with 1,666 and 709 employees in Germany, we employed the OBPS to examine associations between perceived organizational bullshit and employee wellbeing. The standard preliminary analyses to evaluate psychometric properties of the measures used in these studies indicated some issues with our German version of

Workplace management practices and quiet quitting among primary healthcare workers: a sequential-parallel mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: The quiet quitting phenomenon, a new emerging and hidden turnover behavior, is prevalent among primary healthcare (PHC) workers. Addressing their quiet quitting requires exploring possible managerial factors of management practice such as goal-setting, organizational centralization, organizational culture and incentives in the workplace, which are rarely jointly considered but offering great value for the construction of healing workplaces amid current medical reform. This study explores the associations between management practices in primary healthcare institutions and quiet quit

Beyond the surface: exploring the impact of toxic leadership on emotional and cognitive strain at work.

INTRODUCTION: Toxic leadership has emerged as a critical organizational risk factor linked to employee psychological distress and reduced well-being. Drawing on the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model and Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this study investigates how toxic leadership influences employee health outcomes among working professionals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Specifically, it examines the parallel mediating roles of emotional exhaustion and cognitive distraction, as well as the moderating role of perceived organizational support, addressing the limited empirical evidence from G

Balancing innovation and efficiency in a private-equity-changed world of IVF: the case for sustainable scale.

The scale of IVF centres currently ranges from small, stand-alone units to large networked organizations operating across multiple regions or countries. This diversity in organizational models may influence clinical outcomes, patient experience, professional practice, innovation and long-term sustainability. In parallel with broader healthcare trends, the fertility sector has undergone rapid consolidation over the last decade, prompting renewed debate regarding the relationship between centre size, governance structures, quality of care and efficiency. This opinion paper critically examines th
