Nuclear medicine and molecular imaging of the pediatric chest: current practical imaging assessment.

In the chest, the indications for nuclear medicine studies are broader and more varied in children than in adults. In children, nuclear medicine studies are used to evaluate congenital and developmental disorders of the chest, as well as diseases more typical of adults. In the chest, pediatric nuclear medicine uses the same radiopharmaceuticals and imaging techniques as used in adults to evaluate cardiac and pulmonary disease, aerodigestive disorders, and pediatric malignancies. The introduction of PET (mostly using (18)F-FDG) has transformed pediatric nuclear oncology, particular for imaging

Adrenal tumour imaging: clinical, molecular, and radiomics perspectives.

Adrenal tumours have become a common incidental finding in the radiological evaluation of patients. Estimates suggest that 1-10% of the general population currently harbours an adrenal tumour, peaking in prevalence in the seventh and eighth decades of life. Advances in CT and MR have contributed to improved characterisation of adrenal masses, and novel radiopharmaceuticals are being developed for molecular characterisation and disease subtyping. As a result, the imaging and management of adrenal tumours have been important subjects of many guidelines and consensus statements. New radiomics app

Mapping Alzheimer's disease heterogeneity with molecular imaging biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is neuropathologically defined by the buildup of misfolded proteins such as extracellular amyloid-β (Aβ) and intracellular tau neurofibrillary tangles. AD also extends beyond these pathological processes, and additional mechanisms such as synaptic dysfunction, microglial activity, astrocytic neuroinflammation play an important role as biomarkers of AD progression. In vivo evaluation and quantification of these molecular processes are possible with positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. As disease-modifying therapies are entering clinical use, biomarker

Molecular MR Imaging of Renal Fibrogenesis in Mice.

BACKGROUND: In most CKDs, lysyl oxidase oxidation of collagen forms allysine side chains, which then form stable crosslinks. We hypothesized that MRI with the allysine-targeted probe Gd-oxyamine (OA) could be used to measure this process and noninvasively detect renal fibrosis. METHODS: Two mouse models were used: hereditary nephritis in Col4a3-deficient mice (Alport model) and a glomerulonephritis model, nephrotoxic nephritis (NTN). MRI measured the difference in kidney relaxation rate, ΔR1, after intravenous Gd-OA administration. Renal tissue was collected for biochemical and histological a

Molecular Imaging Markers to Track Huntington's Disease Pathology.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive, monogenic dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by repeat expansion mutation in the huntingtin gene. The accumulation of mutant huntingtin protein, forming intranuclear inclusions, subsequently leads to degeneration of medium spiny neurons in the striatum and cortical areas. Genetic testing can identify HD gene carriers before individuals develop overt cognitive, psychiatric, and chorea symptoms. Thus, HD gene carriers can be studied in premanifest stages to understand and track the evolution of HD pathology. While advances have been made, the p

Biomarkers for Radiation Pneumonitis Using Noninvasive Molecular Imaging.

UNLABELLED: Our goal is to develop minimally invasive biomarkers for predicting radiation-induced lung injury before symptoms develop. Currently, there are no biomarkers that can predict radiation pneumonitis. Radiation damage to the whole lung is a serious risk in nuclear accidents or in radiologic terrorism. Our previous studies have shown that a single dose of 15 Gy of x-rays to the thorax causes severe pneumonitis in rats by 6-8 wk. We have also developed a mitigator for radiation pneumonitis and fibrosis that can be started as late as 5 wk after radiation. METHODS: We used 2 functional S

New Approaches to Molecular Imaging of Multiple Myeloma.

Molecular imaging plays an important role in detection and staging of hematologic malignancies. Multiple myeloma (MM) is an age-related hematologic malignancy of clonal bone marrow plasma cells characterized by destructive bone lesions and is fatal in most patients. Traditional skeletal survey and bone scans have sensitivity limitations for osteolytic lesions manifested in MM. Progressive biomedical imaging technologies such as low-dose CT, molecularly targeted PET, MRI, and the functional-anatomic hybrid versions (PET/CT and PET/MRI) provide incremental advancements in imaging MM. Imaging wit…
