Non-host volatiles mediate associational resistance to the pine processionary moth.

An increasing body of evidence indicates that the association between different plant species may lead to a reduction in insect herbivory, i.e. associational resistance. This might be due to a top-down regulation of herbivores by increased numbers of natural enemies or to a disruptive bottom-up influence of lower host plant accessibility. In particular, the richer plant communities release more diverse plant odours that may disturb olfactory-guided host choice and mating behaviour of insect herbivores, i.e. the "semiochemical diversity hypothesis". However, this hypothesis has been rarely test

Immunolocalization of a candidate pheromone receptor in the antenna of the male moth, Heliothis virescens.

Pheromone recognition in insects is thought to involve distinct receptor proteins in the dendritic membrane of antennal sensory neurons. We have generated antibodies directed against a peptide derived from the sequence of the candidate pheromone receptor HR13 from Heliothis virescens. The antibodies specifically labelled the cell bodies of a distinct neuron population housed in male-specific pheromone-sensitive sensilla. Combining antibody staining with in situ hybridization the reactive cells were found to express the HR13 gene. In addition, dendrites projecting into sensilla hairs as well as

The moth-eaten alopecia of secondary syphilis. A histopathological study of 12 patients.

Moth-eaten alopecia (MEA) is a characteristic manifestation of secondary syphilis. Clinically, this form of alopecia may be confused with trichotillomania, traction alopecia, and alopecia areata. The histopathological features of the latter conditions are well described, but information regarding the histology of syphilitic MEA is sparse. We systematically documented the histopathological features of 12 patients with MEA. Characteristic features included follicular plugging; a sparse, perivascular and perifollicular lymphocytic infiltrate; telogenization and follicle-oriented melanin clumping.

Olfactory receptor responses to sex pheromone components in the redbanded leafroller moth.

Electrical responses of single olfactory receptor neurons of the male redbanded leafroller moth were elicited by each of the principle components of the sex pheromone and six other behaviorally active compounds. Response frequencies to equal intensities of each of these compounds and changes in response frequency with increasing amounts of any one compound, varied from receptor to receptor. These differences in response characteristics appear to be due to factors intrinsic to the olfactory recptor neuron and not to factors external to it. The encoding of odor quality by these receptor neurons

Spatial and seasonal taxonomic patterns in moth communities of the central Congo peatlands.

Tropical insect communities are highly diverse but understudied, limiting understanding of tropical forest ecosystem functioning. This is especially true of the swamp forests of the central Congo peatlands, where peat occurs beneath two widespread forest types dominated by either hardwood trees or Raphia laurentii palms. Here, we describe taxonomic patterns in moth community composition, vertical stratification and seasonality in these two peat swamp forest types and the nearby terra firme forest. From 16 636 specimens, we identified 1110 species/morphospecies. Both swamp forest communities we

A gustatory receptor mediates sucrose detection to enhance moth reproductive fitness.

The mutualism between pollinators and flowering plants is a fundamental interaction in ecosystems, mediated by nectar rewards. Sucrose, a major component of floral nectar, is a key driver of pollinator foraging, yet the sensory mechanisms underlying sucrose detection are poorly defined. Here we demonstrate that the pollinator Mythimna separata exhibits a strong sex-independent preference for sucrose, which directly enhances reproductive fitness. We identify MsepGR5, a gustatory receptor expressed in antennal sensilla chaetica, as a key receptor mediating sucrose detection. Crucially, genetic a

Protocol for dissecting and excising the brain of the Manduca sexta (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) moth.

The Carolina Sphinx moth, Manduca sexta (L.) is widely used in neurobiological research, particularly those investigating the olfactory system. Due in part to similarities in brain structure and neural processing with mammals, M. sexta is regarded as a valuable model organism in neuroscience. However, despite its increasing relevance in research, detailed protocols for brain dissection in this species remain limited. This protocol provides step-by-step guidance for opening the head capsule of M. sexta and excising the brain. It visually guides the reader using annotated diagrams highlighting k

The visual system of a nocturnal long-distance migrant, the Australian Bogong moth.

The Australian Bogong moth (Agrotis infusa) is a small noctuid moth that undertakes annual, nocturnal migrations of up to 1000 km to escape the summer heat of its breeding grounds. The moths travel to cool alpine caves, where they enter a dormant state (aestivation) before returning to reproduce and die. During migration, their brains integrate magnetic and visual cues to guide their flight direction. While the Bogong moth's neurobiology is increasingly understood, its visual system has remained unexplored. Here, we describe the morphology, ultrastructure, optics, and visual opsins of the Bogo…

Monitoring nanoplastic aging in situ by moth-eye mimic plasmonic substrates.

Micro-nano plastics aging is crucial as it determines the environmental fate of each plastic particle, yet few studies involved in situ aging of nanoplastics. Herein, we utilized nanosphere lithography combined with goldnanorod assembly to prepare a moth-eye mimic plasmonic substrate featuring excellent SERS performance. The substrate was applied to in situ characterize the degradation process of PS nanoplastics during UV aging. Raman spectra evidence that the substrate is sensitive to superficial chemical changes of PS nanoplastics at initial stage during 24 h of continuous UV aging. The disr

Moth eaten alopecia as the only manifestation of syphilis: a case from Nepal.

This paper presents a case of Moth-Eaten Alopecia as the only clinical manifestation of secondary syphilis in a 28-year-old man from Nepal. The patient exhibited progressive hair loss in the occipitoparietal region without associated pain or itching. With a positive Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) test (1:256), the patient received a three-week course of Benzathine Penicillin G, resulting in complete hair regrowth within four months. This case underscores the significance of recognizing moth eaten alopecia as a potential dermatological sign of secondary syphilis, especially when it appears as the so

Antennal transcriptome analysis of the piercing moth Oraesia emarginata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The piercing fruit moth Oraesia emarginata is an economically significant pest; however, our understanding of its olfactory mechanisms in infestation is limited. The present study conducted antennal transcriptome analysis of olfactory genes using real-time quantitative reverse transcription PCR analysis (RT-qPCR). We identified a total of 104 candidate chemosensory genes from several gene families, including 35 olfactory receptors (ORs), 41 odorant-binding proteins, 20 chemosensory proteins, 6 ionotropic receptors, and 2 sensory neuron membrane proteins. Seven candidate pheromone receptors (PR

Effects of two bitter substances on olfactory conditioning in the moth Heliothis virescens.

In nature, moths encounter nutritious and toxic substances in plants, and thus have to discriminate between a diversity of tastants. Whereas olfactory learning allowing memory of nutritious plants is well demonstrated, little is known about learning and memory of toxic items in adult lepidopterans. Moths may use bitter substances to detect and possibly learn to avoid noxious plants. We have studied the physiological and behavioural effects of two bitter substances, quinine and sinigrin, on the moth Heliothis virescens. Electrophysiological recordings showed responses to both compounds in gusta…

Neuromodulation by 5-hydroxytryptamine in the antennal lobe of the sphinx moth Manduca sexta.

Using intracellular recording techniques, we have begun to examine the effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) on antennal-lobe (AL) neurones in the brain of the adult moth Manduca sexta. 5-HT modulated the responses of local interneurones and projection neurones, which were recognized on the basis of well-established electrophysiological criteria, to primary synaptic input elicited by electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral antennal nerve. 5-HT applied at low concentration (10(-8) mol l-1) reduced the excitatory responses evoked by electrical stimulation of the antennal nerve, whereas at high

Pheromone-Induced Delayed Oviposition in Helicoverpa armigera and H. assulta Moths Under Chronic High-Dose Sex Pheromone Exposure.

In this study, we chronically exposed virgin male and female moths of two closely related noctuid species, Helicoverpa armigera (the cotton bollworm, CBW) and H. assulta (the oriental tobacco budworm, OTB), to conspecific sex pheromones, interspecific sex pheromones, or a control environment, and measured several reproductive and longevity parameters in females, as well as male longevity. The results show that pheromone exposure treatment shaped the temporal pattern of female oviposition (i.e., delayed oviposition), but had no significant effect on life-history span factor (the principal compo…

The crescent cross-section and dichotomous chitin structure make the proboscis of butterflies and moths a hydraulic spring.

The proboscis of butterflies and moths is made of two C-shaped tubular strands, each with a crescent cross-section. Together, they form a food canal for fluid uptake. Each strand is sealed at the free end and blood is pumped in at the head. The accepted scenario for proboscis uncoiling assumes that intrinsic muscles deform the proboscis walls like fingers pressing a bicycle tire, decreasing the cross-sectional area and displacing blood that pushes the external walls outward, as does the air in the tire. This scenario requires the external walls of the strands to be softer than the food canal w…

Visual stimuli induced by self-motion and object-motion modify odour-guided flight of male moths (Manduca sexta L.).

Animals rely on multimodal sensory integration for proper orientation within their environment. For example, odour-guided behaviours often require appropriate integration of concurrent visual cues. To gain a further understanding of mechanisms underlying sensory integration in odour-guided behaviour, our study examined the effects of visual stimuli induced by self-motion and object-motion on odour-guided flight in male M. sexta. By placing stationary objects (pillars) on either side of a female pheromone plume, moths produced self-induced visual motion during odour-guided flight. These flights…

Lashing architecture in a meshed cocoon of a lichen-feeding moth Cyana (Lithosiini: Erebidae).

A cocoon is a protective outer casing that supports metamorphosis of lepidopteran insects. While some lepidopteran species build cocoons solely from silk, others may incorporate other surrounding materials or recycled body parts into their cocoons. Despite extensive knowledge of cocoons from commercially valuable species, information from species that secrete a low amount of silk remains scant. The lichen-feeding moth (Cyana) is an example of a lepidopteran genus that constructs its meshed cocoon from its larval-stage setae. In this study, we uncovered the lashing silk architecture of Cyana sp
