Motion sickness in migraine sufferers.

Motion sickness commonly occurs after exposure to actual motion, such as car or amusement park rides, or virtual motion, such as panoramic movies. Motion sickness symptoms may be disabling, significantly limiting business, travel and leisure activities. Motion sickness occurs in approximately 50% of migraine sufferers. Understanding motion sickness in migraine patients may improve understanding of the physiology of both conditions. Recent literature suggests important relationships between the trigeminal system and vestibular nuclei that may have implications for both motion sickness and migra…

[Motion sickness exemplified by seasickness].

The knowledge of seasickness is as old as seafaring itself. In ancient times the Babylonians already reported on this malaise and on possible therapeutical measurements. The Babylonians, the advice of old sailors and modern pharmaceuticals have one thing in common. They have not been able to find a complete cure for motion disease. The interactions of the relevant cerebral structures are so complex that no drug is available which can interrupt this process definitively. The most important preventive measure is to develop strategies which lead to a quicker adaptation to movement.

Motion sickness and vestibular hypersensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: Motion sickness is poorly understood, although it has been recognized for years as debilitating. Vestibular function is required for motion sickness to occur, but motion sickness can also be brought on without body motion. The aim of this study was to see if there was a correlation between caloric response and motion sickness susceptibility. DESIGN: One experiment was a prospective study carried out on 200 patients. A second prospective study was carried out on 121 patients. SETTING: Patients referred to our tertiary/quaternary care dizziness clinic. METHODS: In experiment 1, cal…

Neural mechanisms of motion sickness.

Three kinds of neurotransmitters: histamine, acetylcholine and noradrenaline, play important roles in the neural processes of motion sickness, because antihistamines, scopolamine and amphetamine are effective in preventing motion sickness. Histamine H1-receptors are involved in the development of the symptoms and signs of motion sickness, including emesis. On provocative motion stimuli, a neural mismatch signal activates the histaminergic neuron system in the hypothalamus, and the histaminergic descending impulse stimulates H1-receptors in the emetic center of the brainstem. The histaminergic …

Motion sickness and otolith asymmetry.

There is a highly scattered inter-individual susceptibility in man to motion sickness. It is discussed whether different masses of otoconias between right and left sides are responsible for a high susceptibility. In order to proof this theory, we measured the otoliths of fish (salmons, trouts, Xiphophorus Helleri; Sumatra barbes) and found big differences in the utricular stones up to 140%. The mass differences of the saccular stones were much smaller. In fish, showing abnormal swimming behavior during off-vertical axis rotation we found big mass differences compared to that of normal swimmers…

Postural instability precedes motion sickness.

We evaluated the hypothesis that postural instability precedes the onset of motion sickness. Subjects standing in a "moving room" were exposed to nearly global oscillating optical flow. In the experimental condition, the optical oscillations were a complex sum-of-sines between 0.1 and 0.3 Hz, with an excursion of 1.8 cm. This optical motion was of such low frequency and magnitude that it was sometimes not noticed by subjects. However, in two experiments, exposure to the moving room produced significant increases in scores on a standard motion sickness questionnaire. In addition, approximately …

Psychophysiological aspects of motion sickness.

Motion sickness may occur during travel by sea, automobile, airplane, and space. Susceptibility changes with age and may be influenced by psychological factors. Susceptibility can be reduced in most people by medications that involve histamine or neurotransmitters acetylcholine and noradrenaline, and influence the vestibular system.

Neurochemical mechanisms of motion sickness.

Three kinds of neurotransmitters (histamine, acetylcholine, and catecholamine) are thought to be important in the neural processes of motion sickness because antihistaminics, scopolamine, and amphetamine are effective in preventing motion sickness. In this study, we examined the neurochemical and neuropharmacologic features of motion sickness in rats. Based on our results, we propose the following hypotheses for the neurochemical mechanisms of motion sickness: (1) the histaminergic neuron system is involved in the signs and symptoms of motion sickness, including vomiting; (2) the acetylcholine…

Childhood migraine and motion sickness.

The incidence of motion sickness among 222 children in four diagnostic categories--migraine, nonmigraine headaches, seizure disorders, and learning disabilities--was compared. Motion sickness was found to be an associated feature in 45% of the cases of childhood migraine, in contrast to a 5% to 7% incidence in the other groups. Therefore, it is suggested that motion sickness be regarded as an additional reliable minor criterion in the diagnosis of childhood migraine. Hypotheses of common central and peripheral mechanisms underlying both conditions are offered.

Postural behavior and motion sickness.

(1) An interesting style of acting was demonstrated on a stage of a Kyogen, a classic comedy of Japan, titled "Funawatashimuko", i.e., "A boatman and a bridgegroom in a boat". Antagonistic postures which move toward the opposite direction were displayed by a boatman who is pulling an oar and a passenger who is being moved by the rolling of a boat. (2) Why doesn't one suffer from motion sickness when he drives a car but may suffer from it when he is a passenger? This question was answered, from the standpoint of human postures, by observing the antagonistic postures exhibited by a bus-driver an…
