Ninety-two patients with motor neurone disease have been assessed clinically and radiologically for evidence of swallowing problems. At the time of examination, moderate or severe swallowing difficulty was present in 89% of those whose disease had presented as bulbar palsy, in 45% of those in whom the disease began many months before as progressive muscular atrophy and in 29% of those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Patients with more severe swallowing symptoms appeared more likely to have abnormal findings on videofluoroscopy overall. However, not all patients with an abnormal radiologica

A 9-year-old Quarter Horse mare was examined because of progressive weight loss, weakness, muscle atrophy and tremors, and behavioral change. Selenium and glutathione peroxidase assays, blood lead analysis, erythrocyte transketolase analysis, pseudorabies and Borrelia burgdorferi serology, electromyography, and CSF analysis were performed. Motor neuron degeneration was diagnosed by microscopic examination of neural tissues. The cause of the disease was not substantiated, but several possibilities were excluded via diagnostic testing. Diagnosis of motor neuron degeneration in horses may be made

We investigated a 69-year-old male with a clinical syndrome resembling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis characterized by fasciculation, wasting of the limb muscles and increased deep tendon reflexes in the lower limbs. Electromyographic (EMG) studies showed abundant positive sharp waves and fibrillation potentials with decreased recruitment in the limbs and paraspinal muscles. The patient recovered almost completely in approximately 1.5 years, and follow-up EMG studies showed no positive sharp waves or fibrillation potentials in the limb muscles except for some polyphasic motor units in the bilat

In some patients, motor neuron disease (MND) is associated with a paraprotein, raising the question that there may be a relationship between MND and monoclonal gammopathy. We analysed the presence of monoclonal immunoglobulin in the serum from 53 patients with MND using immunofixation in cellulose acetate membrane. The incidence of paraproteins in 6 cases (11.3%) of patients with MND exceeds values found with cellulose acetate membrane supports in reported populations (below 1%), even when age was also considered. Monoclonal components were IgG (33%), IgM (33%) and IgA (33%). In six cases, fou

BACKGROUND: Risdiplam is an orally administered treatment for spinal muscular atrophy which leads to an improvement in motor function as measured by functional motor scales compared with placebo. Although risdiplam has been registered since 2020, real-world data in adults is still scarce. There have been no new safety signals so far, with some results pointing that risdiplam may be effectiveObjective:The objective was to present real-world data of 31 adult patients with spinal muscular atrophy type 2 and type 3 treated with risdiplam in the Republic of CroatiaMethods:Treatment effects were ass

Motor neuron diseases (MNDs) are a wide group of neurodegenerative disorders characterized by the degeneration of a specific neuronal type located in the central nervous system, the motor neuron (MN). There are two main types of MNs, spinal and cortical MNs and depending on the type of MND, one or both types are affected. Cortical MNs innervate spinal MNs and these control a variety of cellular targets, being skeletal muscle their main one which is also affected in MNDs. A correct functionality of autophagy is necessary for the survival of all cellular types and it is particularly crucial for

Increasing evidence suggests that the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is not restri … nd astrocytes in the ALS mouse models and human ALS, and it also covers the deregulated pathways in motor neurons, which are involved in initiating the disease. Based on the cell-type specific pathomechanisms of motor neuron disease, targeting of neuroinflammation could lead to future therapeutic strategies for ALS and could be potentially applied to other neur …

Motor neurone disease (MND), the commonest clinical presentation of which is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is regarded as the most devastating of adult-onset neurodegenerative disorders. The last decade has seen major improvements in patient care, but also rapid scientific advances, so that rational therapies based on key pathogenic mechanisms now seem plausible. ALS is strikingly heterogeneous in both its presentation, with an average one-year delay from first symptoms to diagnosis, and subsequent rate of clinical progression. Although half of patients succumb within 3-4 years of sympt

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the most common adult motor neuron disease, is an acquired disorder that results in loss of function in multiple domains. Although there is no treatment that can halt or reverse this progressive condition, there are many opportunities for interventions that can lead to improved quality of life for the patient and caregiver. Physical and occupational therapy can assist with mobility and activities of daily living. Interventions by speech pathology can optimize nutrition and communication. Respiratory function can be managed noninvasively or invasively. Depre

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a relatively rare, progressive and incurable neurological condition affecting patients' speech, mobility and respiratory function. Care of patients with MND is complex and involves various healthcare professionals and services. There is a need to discuss symptom management and promote palliative and end of life care from the point of diagnosis to ensure appropriate holistic care is provided.

Motor neuron diseases as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and post-polio syndrome are characterized by prominent muscular weakness and severe motor disability. The prevalence of fatigue in motor neuron diseases is remarkably high, and may contribute significantly to patients' disability and a poor quality of life. Despite its high prevalence, fatigue is an understudied clinical problem in motor neuron diseases and is often overlooked. The present review will attempt to explain the pathogenic mechanisms of muscle fatigue in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and post-polio syndrome, to cover the variou

The number of genes associated with motor neuron degeneration has increased considerably over the past few years. As more gene mutations are … A metabolism. We hypothesize that both phenomena are not only crucial for the normal functioning of motor neurons, but that they could also be interconnected. In analogy with the situation after acute stress, axonal mRNA translation followed by retrograde transport of the signal back to the nucleus could play an important role in chronic motor neuron diseases. …

Degenerative processes within the nervous system are common features in disease entities such as dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT), Parkinson disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a neurodegenerative disease with unknown etiology; widespread muscle wasting and respiratory failure lead to death within a few years. Denervation can be detected with electromyography and axonal deterioration monitored by motor unit number estimates. Several suggestions about the cause of ALS have emerged but no solid theory has yet precipitated. Lead or mercury exposure has been suggested. Ex
