Helmet use and risk compensation in motorcycle accidents.

OBJECTIVE: The "risk compensation" hypothesis suggests that individuals offset perceived gains in safety by increasing their risk-taking behavior to maintain a stable or "homeostatic" level of risk. If this is true for motorcyclists, then helmet use, which reduces the risk of brain injury and death, may lead helmet users to take more risks when they ride. Thus, increased risk-taking by helmet users should show up as overrepresentation in crashes, and accident reconstruction should reveal risky behaviors in the seconds just before the crash. This article examines data from two separate studies

Motorcycle crash characteristics in Nigeria: implication for control.

Despite being the second most common cause of road traffic injuries (RTIs) in Nigeria, no study had examined the peculiarities of motorcycle crash site characteristics in Nigeria. We examined and interviewed 363 motorcycle RTI patients in three tertiary hospitals in southwest Nigeria. All the motorcycles are small with capacities between 80 and 125cm3. 68.9% of the patients sustained their injuries while working or going to work and 23.4% on their way to school. 176 (48.5%) of the crashes were with moving vehicles and in 83 (22.3%) cases, either the motorcycle or the other vehicle is moving ag…

Motorcycle helmets and rider safety: a legislative crisis.

Over the past four decades, motorcycle helmet laws within the United States have been in a state of flux and have been shaped by the conflicting influences of the federal government's initiatives to shape state policies and motorcycle advocates' persistent lobbying efforts. Examination of individual state experiences with motorcycle helmet legislation demonstrates that universal motorcycle helmet laws effectively promote helmet use compliance, reduce morbidity and mortality in motorcycle crashes, and lower the health care costs and associated societal burdens of these crash victims. Motorcycle

Risk factors for riding and crashing a motorcycle unhelmeted.

BACKGROUND: Currently, less than half of all U.S. states require helmets for motorcycle operators. Although research has demonstrated the effectiveness of helmets, less is known about the characteristics of individuals who choose to ride motorcycles unhelmeted. OBJECTIVES: The specific aims of this study were to identify risk factors leading to riding and crashing a motorcycle without a helmet and to compare outcomes of helmeted vs. unhelmeted motorcyclists involved in a motorcycle crash. METHODS: This 13-year (1994-2006) retrospective study of adult motorcycle crashes admitted to a Level II…

[Unexplained circulatory collapse after a motorcycle accident].

BACKGROUND: Cardiac valve injury caused by non-penetrating chest trauma is unusual but may occur even after moderate injuries. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 19-year-old man sustained blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen in a motorcycle crash. He was able to walk, removed his jacket and helmet and called for help via his mobile phone. He had bilateral lung contusions and multiple rib fractures. A rupture of the spleen was managed conservatively. On day 4 he needed mechanical ventilatory support and a left chest tube was inserted. Transthoracic echocardiography showed a mitral valve insufficiency gr

Effectiveness of collision-involved motorcycle helmets in Thailand.

The purpose of this study was to analyze variables present in selected motorcycle crashes involving helmeted riders to find the best injury predictors. The helmets used in this study were collected from motorcycle crashes in Thailand. Pertinent data were collected, a conventional helmet impact drop test apparatus was used to quantify the head impact forces, and stepwise multiple regression analyses were performed. The results indicate that the geometry of the object impacting the head and GSI were the best predictors for MAIS (R ( 2 ) =.875) while geometry of the object, liner thickness and im

Conception of the cervico-brachial protector for motorcycle drivers.

The increasing popularity of motorcycles increases the role of motorcycle accidents as a main cause of brachial plexus injuries. In view of the high social cost of treatment of the victims it seemed desirable to devise some kind of protective clothing for motorcyclists. The protective clothing devised by teams from Department of Neurosurgery, TRICOTEXTIL--and Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics Institute, consists of the following parts: cervical collar--acting against force causing lateral bending and extension of cervical spine, shock-absorptive shoulder pads--acting against the impact energy …

[Patterns of injuries and preventive measures for motorcycle accidents].

Retrospective analysis of a series of 32 motorcyclists admitted after road accidents was performed. 62% were injured on scooters with 50 cc engine capacity and most of the combined injuries occurred in this group. Most crashes occurred at road junctions. Riders of scooters with larger engine capacities tended to wear protective garments as opposed to riders with smaller engines. There was no correlation between engine capacity and severity of injury. We conclude that motorcyclists should receive special education, especially as to behavior on entering road junctions. We recommend that taxes on

Analysis of fatal motorcycle crashes: crash typing.

There were 2074 crashes fatal to a motorcycle driver in the United States during 1992. A computer program was developed to convert Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) data for these crashes into standard format English language "crash reports". The computer generated reports were analyzed and crash type categories were defined. Five defined crash type categories accounted for 1785 (86%) of the 2074 crash events: Ran off-road (41%); ran traffic control (18%); oncoming or head-on (11%); left-turn oncoming (8%); and motorcyclist down (7%). Alcohol and excessive speed were common factors associ

An improved motorcycle helmet design for tropical climates.

Approximately 20% of all fatal traffic crashes in India involve riders of motorized two-wheelers. Head protection of two-wheeler riders is therefore a very important issue. This paper reports the results of a survey of patterns of motorcycle helmet use in Delhi, and the design details of a more comfortable helmet. The survey results were used as guidelines for designing a safer helmet, with a better ventilating system, to promote wider use. In the new design additional protection is provided on the sides of the helmet, since our earlier studies showed that more head injuries occur on the side
