Rhizopus, Mucor, and Lichtheimia (formerly Absidia) species are the most common members of the order Mucorales that cause mucormycosis, accounting for 70 to 80% of all cases. In contrast, Cunninghamella, Apophysomyces, Saksenaea, Rhizomucor, Cokeromyces, Actinomucor, and Syncephalastrum species individually are responsible for fewer than 1 to 5% of reported cases of mucormycosis. In this review, we provide an overview of the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis of, treatment of, and prognosis for unusual Mucormycetes infections (non-Rhizopus, -Mucor, and -Lichtheimia species). The …

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is a rare and opportunistic infection usually associated with hematologic diseases, diabetes mellitus, renal failure, solid tumors, and organ transplantation.
METHODS: We present five cases of mucor infection after transplantation (three after a series of 750 orthotopic liver transplantation and two after a series of 13 simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation in patients with type 1 diabetes) subjected to medical and surgical treatment and analyze the factors related to the development of this infection.
RESULTS: The clinical forms were two cutaneous (laparotomy…

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has emerged as a popular model system to investigate cell biology and host-pathogen interactions. Presently, C. elegans is studied as a natural host of intracellular pathogens such as microsporidia and Orsay virus, along with extracellular bacterial and fungal pathogens. The use of C. elegans as a model in host-pathogen research is limited by the number of naturally occurring pathogens that infect this organism. Through a sampling project to identify new pathogens of C. elegans, we identified the fungus Mucor hiemalis as a pathogen of Caenorhabditis species.…

The Mucor circinelloides complex, a group of dung-dwelling fungi, is essential for nutrient cycling and organic matter breakdown. Despite their ecological significance, variations in germination rates and stress tolerance among isolates are not well understood. This study examined four isolates-Cicarelli, Doc Beaver, Papulsa, and Zaina-to assess their germination on various media, including potato dextrose agar (PDA), Czapek (CZA), Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA), Emerson (EM), and minimal media (MM). The results showed notable differences in germination rates, with CZA and EM promoting the fast…

Mucor irregularis, an emerging causative agent of disfiguring mucormycosis, demonstrates distinct clinical manifestations between hyphae and spore forms, though the pathogenic determinants between these two forms remain elusive. Utilizing TMT (tandem mass tag)-based quantitative proteomics (ProteomeXchange: PXD055430), we conducted a comparative analysis of these morphotypes, followed by Gene Ontology (GO)/Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment and protein-protein interaction network construction. Critically, we identified the following: (i) tRNA sulfur modification (NCS6) i…

UNLABELLED: Survival factor 1 (Svf1) protein has been described in some ascomycetous fungi where it was found to be contributing to several essential physiological processes, such as response to osmotic, oxidative and cold stresses, sphingolipid biosynthesis, morphogenesis, sporulation, antifungal resistance, and pathogenicity. It was also suggested that it can be a novel central regulator affecting the expression of various genes. In the present study, function of this protein and the encoding genes is described for the first time in a fungus (i.e., in Mucor lusitanicus) belonging to the orde…

Mucor lusitanicus and some other members of the fungal order Mucorales display the phenomenon of morphological dimorphism. This means that these fungi aerobically produce filamentous hyphae, developing a coenocytic mycelium, but they grow in a multipolar yeast-like form under anaerobiosis. Revealing the molecular mechanism of the reversible yeast-hyphal transition can be interesting for both the biotechnological application and in the understanding of the pathomechanism of mucormycosis. In the present study, transcriptomic analyses were carried out after cultivating the fungus either aerobical…

Mucor infection is rarely reported in non-immunocompromised population, especially in isolated gastrointestinal tracts. IgG(4)-related diseases (IgG(4)-RD) have been recognized in recent years, but secondary causes of IgG(4) elevation should be differentiated. We reported a young man with duodenal mass and ulcer and high serum IgG(4) level. Histological biopsy of the mass revealed positive mucor mycelium and infiltration of IgG(4) positive plasma cells. Serum IgG(4) decreased to normal range after surgical resection and systemic antifungal treatment. This case suggests that isolated mucor myco…

In this article, we describe a chronic case of rhinofacial mucormycosis caused by Mucor irregularis, formerly known as Rhizomucor variabilis var. variabilis, a rare mycotic agent in humans. The infection caused progressive destruction of the nasal septum and soft and hard palate, leading to collapse of the nose bridge and an ulcerative gaping hole. The mucoralean mold cultured from a nasal biopsy specimen was determined by multilocus DNA sequence data to be conspecific with M. irregularis.

The biotransformation of lithocholic acid (LCA) by Mucor racemosus CGMCC 3.20 resulted in the formation of four novel derivatives (compounds 1-4), characterised by 6β and/or 12β hydroxylation and acetylation, in addition to four previously recognised compounds. Comprehensive structural characterisation was achieved through detailed NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution elec-trospray ionisation mass spectrometry (HR-ESI-MS) analyses. M. racemosus exhibited catalytic proficiency in facilitating the structural modification of LCA, enabling the production of both 6β, 12β-hydroxylated and 6β, 12β-ac…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical features, treatment and prognosis of patients with hematological diseases complicated with mucor infection.
METHODS: The risk factors, clinical features, treatment regimen and prognosis of 18 hematological disease patients with mucor infection diagnosed by histopathology in our center from April 2014 to June 2020 were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: Thirteen males and five females, with an average age of 30 (13-54) years old, were diagnosed as mucor infection by histopathological examination at the site of infection, including 16 cases of mucor infec…

Mucormycosis has a mortality rate reaching 90%, and is imperative that therapy be initiated rapidly once a diagnosis is made. Successful treatment consists of management of underlying risk factors, surgical debridement, and antifungal therapies. The dilemma whether or not to pursue extensive debridement presents when the wound is cultured positive but the patient is not systemically ill. We present the first reported case of successful medical treatment of a seroma pocket colonized with mucor in a patient undergoing bilateral reconstruction with tissue expander and acellular dermal matrix.

This study reports on the discovery of heterothallic mating in Mucor irregularis (formerly Rhizomucor variabilis var. variabilis) and it extends the range of this species from Asia to the United States. We report on a case of primary cutaneous mucormycosis, involving the forearms of a cotton farmer from North Carolina, in which the infection was cured using amphotericin B therapy. Intraspecific crosses between the North Carolina strain DUMC 150.04 and M. irregularis CBS 103.93, the ex-type strain of R. variabilis var. variabilis from China, resulted in the formation of abundant fertile zygospo…

A case of primary cutaneous zygomycosis caused by Mucor circinelloides is described. Histopathology showed typical hyphae along with chlamydospores. The isolate was identified by molecular and phenotypic methods. The utility of sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region is highlighted; however, further studies are needed to assess species genetic heterogeneity.
