UNLABELLED: An asymptomatic 77-year-old woman was referred in 2000 because multiple nodular shadows were found on chest X-ray films on a medical checkup. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed bilateral multiple ground-glass opacities and ill-defined nodules. A transbronchial lung biopsy was performed via bronchoscopy, but the specimens did not yield any specific findings. She was then monitored without therapy as an outpatient. In November 2005, chest CT imaging showed that the size and density of the ground-glass opacities and nodules had increased. In January, 2006 video-assisted thoracic su

The clinical characteristics and pathophysiological processes of super-multiple ground-glass nodules (GGNs) remain poorly understood due to their rare incidence. This retrospective-prospective study aimed to elucidate these aspects by analyzing 75 patients with "super-multiple GGNs," having more than five persistent nodules, each measuring at least 5 mm, identified from a larger cohort of 2589 patients. We compared these patients with those having solitary GGNs (N = 691) and 2-5 GGNs (N = 458) to evaluate clinical and radiological characteristics. All patients underwent a minimum 12-month foll

A 52-year-old woman with a history of leiomyoma uteri and tobacco-use disorder in remission presented with 2 months of progressive back pain. Her pain was located between her shoulder blades and was described as constant with intermittent sharp, stabbing sensation. It was nonradiating and aggravated by inspiration. She denied fever, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, or recent changes in weight or appetite. Two days prior, she was evaluated in the ED for similar symptoms and prescribed naproxen and cyclobenzaprine for suspected musculoskeletal pain. However, she received minimal relief, w

A 72-year-old woman presented to our institution with gradually worsening shortness of breath and bilateral lower extremity edema of 3 weeks' duration. She had associated complaints of cough and intermittent hemoptysis. Her medical history was significant for hypertension and hypothyroidism. She was a former cigarette smoker with a 35 pack-year smoking history. She had no recent travel history and had a pet dog at home. Six months before the current hospitalization, evaluation for cough had revealed mediastinal lymphadenopathy at an outside institution. She underwent evaluation with an endobra

Low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is an uncommon gynecologic malignancy of mesodermal origin. Pulmonary metastasis of low-grade ESS can occur years and decades after the treatment of the primary disease. Low-grade ESS is frequently mistaken as benign uterine neoplasm like uterine leiomyoma, which can potentially lead to a misdiagnosis. We present a case of a 42-year-old woman with low-grade ESS, that initially presented as an incidental lung mass with multiple pulmonary nodules, seven years after an uterine myomectomy. A 6.9×5.8 cm-sized intrapelvic mass suspected of uterine origin w…

PURPOSE: To determine whether the computed tomographic (CT) appearances of multiple pulmonary nodules in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) can help differentiate the potential infectious and neoplastic causes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The thoracic CT scans obtained in 60 patients with AIDS and multiple pulmonary nodules were reviewed retrospectively by two thoracic radiologists who were blinded to clinical and pathologic data. The scans were evaluated for nodule size, distribution, and morphologic characteristics. CT findings were correlated with final diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Robotic bronchoscopy with shape-sensing technology enables simultaneous biopsy of multiple pulmonary nodules, including both ipsilateral and bilateral nodules. While this technique holds promise, there is evolving data on its diagnostic yield and complication rates, especially in patients undergoing multiple ipsilateral and bilateral pulmonary nodules biopsies.
METHODS: The primary endpoint was to compare the diagnostic yield and complication rate of multiple pulmonary nodule biopsies (MPNBs) to that of a single pulmonary nodule biopsy. The secondary endpoint was to compare the di…

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT)-guided insertion of coil and suture hook-wire (SHW) insertion is commonly used for preoperative localization of multiple pulmonary nodules (PNs). However, the relative clinical efficacy and safety of these two methods have not been established. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the clinical performance and safety profiles of coil- and SHW-based localization techniques in patients with multiple PNs.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients with multiple PNs who underwent CT-guided coil or SHW localization followed by video-assisted…

A 62-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis and secondary Sjögren's syndrome took methotrexate (MTX) 5 mg three times a week regularly but gradually developed an intermittent fever, oral ulcers and productive cough with mucopurulent sputum for about 2 weeks. Image study found multiple nodular lesions and lymphadenopathies in bilateral lungs. Empirical antibiotics for 1 week failed to alleviate the fever. A transbronchial biopsy in the right fourth bronchus showed infiltration of abnormally enlarged lymphoid cells with a surface marker of CD20, some of which also stained positively in situ wi

An 18-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with high temperature and dyspnea. A chest radiograph revealed the presence of multiple round nodules compatible with a metastatic lung cancer. The peripheral white blood cell count was 22,000/mm3 and more than 85 percent were atypical large lymphocytes with azurophilic granules. He was diagnosed as having natural killer (NK)-cell granular lymphocyte proliferative disorder (NK-GLPD) as the lymphocytes were positive with CD56, a cell surface marker characteristic for NK cells. The major pathologic finding of the tissue collected from the pulmonary

BACKGROUND: The common computed tomography findings of pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis (PLCH) are multiple cysts and micronodules predominantly in middle to upper lung lobes. Non-cystic nodules and large nodules are atypical findings of PLCH.
CASE SUMMARY: The patient was a 48-year-old Japanese man with a smoking history (20 cigarettes/d, 28 years) and no symptoms. Multiple nodules existed in all lung lobes, predominantly in the right lower lobe. Some nodules seemed to be distributed randomly, and others were adjacent to bronchus. Most nodules were solid; some small ones were cystic.

The manifestations of pulmonary cryptococcosis with multiple nodules or masses on computed tomography (CT) are diverse and difficult to differentiate from those of lung cancer and pulmonary tuberculosis. The present study compared the multislice spiral CT signs with pathological results and used the pathological results to explain the CT signs with the aim of improving the accuracy of the diagnosis of this disease. A retrospective analysis of 20 patients with primary pulmonary cryptococcosis with multiple nodules or masses was performed. Based on the CT signs, eight patients had been misdiagno

Pulmonary tuberculosis typically exhibits characteristic imaging findings; however, radiological manifestations can be atypical in certain cases, leading to potential misdiagnosis based solely on CT imaging. We describe a 59-year-old man who developed a 4-month history of cough and a 2-week fever during postoperative radiotherapy following esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. CT scans revealed multiple, scattered cystic cavities in both lungs, characterized by regular shape and well-defined borders. Following anti-tuberculosis therapy, the pre-existing cystic cavities collapsed and evolved int

BACKGROUND: The impact of sampling multiple peripheral pulmonary nodules (mPPNs) during a single robotic-assisted bronchoscopy (RAB) procedure is unknown.
METHODS: A single-center analysis of 341 consecutive RABs targeting 503 PPNs. The primary outcomes were the proportion of subjects receiving multinodule evaluation that clinically benefited from sampling secondary PPNs during the same RAB, and predictors of benefit.
RESULTS: One hundred twenty-five RABs (37% of the total) sampled mPPNs. Among these, 69 (55%) targeted bilateral and 32 (26%) more than 2 PPNs. Sampling secondary PPNs impacted

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection produced by the spirochaete Treponema pallidum accompanied by a broad array of clinical features as the infection can disseminate systemically. Despite this clinical heterogeneity, acquired syphilis rarely manifests with pulmonary involvement. Since 2020, cases of syphilis have increased in the USA and commonly present without urogenital symptoms, making early detection challenging. We present the case of acquired secondary syphilis presenting with multiple solid pulmonary nodules and cervical, axillary and mediastinal lymphadenopathy.
