Muscle contractile properties and perceived fatigue in the general and diseased population.

Knowledge of muscle contractile properties, physical fitness, and their associations with perceived fatigue may provide insights into mechanisms inducing fatigue and treatment targets. We aimed to identify differences in contractile properties and physical fitness between populations, and examine associations with perceived fatigue. We pooled data on perceived fatigue, physical fitness, and contractile properties from six studies, including a control group (n = 90), cancer survivors (n = 27), patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; n = 16), chronic myeloid leukemia (CML; n =

The influence of fatigue in evertor muscles during lateral ankle sprain.

Ankle sprain in plantarflexion and inversion is one of the most common injuries occurring in daily activities and sports. Although acute symptoms may resolve quickly, many individuals have reported persistent pain and instability. Thus, understanding the factors that contribute to the occurrence of this type of injury is extremely important. Although sprains are multifactorial, a relationship can be established between sprain and fatigue. Therefore, the present study examined the latency and intensity of activation of the peroneus longus and brevis muscles under conditions of fatigue. Twenty-t

Acute effects of fatigue of the plantarflexor muscles on different postural tasks.

Although the effect of muscle fatigue on posture is apparent, results are inconsistent across studies and this may be due to differences in the fatigue protocol, postural stance used and/or amount of visual information provided. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that fatigue would have a more pronounced effect for more difficult compared with less difficult postural tasks. Twenty-three young adults (mean age 22 ± 3 years) were asked to perform three different postural tasks on a force-platform: feet together, semi-tandem and single-leg stance, before and immediately after fa…

Neck flexor muscle fatigue in adolescents with headache: an electromyographic study.

BACKGROUND: Muscular disorders of the neck region may be of importance for the etiology of tension-type headache. However, in adolescents, there are no data on the association between neck muscle fatigue and headache. AIM: To study differences in fatigue characteristics of the neck flexor muscles in adolescents with and without headache. METHODS: A population-based sample of 17-year-old adolescents with migraine-type headache (N=30), tension-type headache (N=29) and healthy controls without headache (N=30) was examined. Surface EMG data were recorded from the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle…

Combined effect of repetitive work and cold on muscle function and fatigue.

This study compared the effect of repetitive work in thermoneutral and cold conditions on forearm muscle electromyogram (EMG) and fatigue. We hypothesize that cold and repetitive work together cause higher EMG activity and fatigue than repetitive work only, thus creating a higher risk for overuse injuries. Eight men performed six 20-min work bouts at 25 degrees C (W-25) and at 5 degrees C while exposed to systemic (C-5) and local cooling (LC-5). The work was wrist flexion-extension exercise at 10% maximal voluntary contraction. The EMG activity of the forearm flexors and extensors was higher d

Rhythmic cortical and muscle discharges induced by fatigue in corticobasal degeneration.

We describe a patient presenting clinical features of corticobasal degeneration (CBD), including reflex myoclonus in the left upper limb. This patient complained of a marked worsening of involuntary movements in the left upper limb after exercise. We analysed the electrophysiological characteristics of myoclonus in the basal state and after a fatiguing exercise in the left upper limb. In the basal condition, single trials recording EEG showed a cortical complex occurring 20 ms after stimulation of the left median nerve. Surface EMG recordings of the left first dorsal interosseous (FDI) reveale

Electrophysiologic evaluation of muscle fatigue development and recovery in late polio.

OBJECTIVES: To study aspects of fatigue in late-polio patients and healthy controls. We hypothesized that late-polio subjects would develop more peripheral fatigue, assessed with surface electromyography (EMG), and that no major differences would exist between the two groups in neuromuscular junction transmission. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: University hospital laboratory. SUBJECTS: Ten patients with a history of polio (mean age, 54 yrs, SD = 5; mean time since polio onset, 49 yrs, SD = 7) and a matched control group (mean age, 52 yrs, SD = 8). METHODS: A protocol with a stepwise

Effects of the forearm support band on wrist extensor muscle fatigue.

STUDY DESIGN: A crossover experimental design with repeated measures. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the forearm support band alters wrist extensor muscle fatigue. BACKGROUND: Fatigue of the wrist extensor muscles is thought to be a contributing factor in the development of lateral epicondylitis. The forearm support band is purported to reduce or prevent symptoms of lateral epicondylitis but the mechanism of action is unknown. METHODS AND MEASURES: Fifty unimpaired subjects (36 men, 14 women; mean age = 29 +/- 6 years) were tested with and without a forearm support band before and after a …

Metabolic changes associated with the slowing of relaxation in fatigued mouse muscle.

1. The biochemical basis of the slowing of relaxation seen in fatigue has been examined using an isolated mouse soleus preparation. 2. Slowing of relaxation occurred during prolonged tetani under anaerobic conditions when ATP and PC fell and lactate accumulated. 3. Slowing of relaxation was also demonstrated with muscles poisoned with cyanide and iodoacetic acid when there was a fall in ATP and PC but no accumulation of lactate. During a period of anaerobic recovery following a fatiguing tetanus, relaxation became faster at a time when lactate was accumulating in the muscle. 4. It is concluded

Diaphragmatic ultrasonography as a predictor of respiratory muscle fatigue in myasthenia gravis.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Easy fatigability, the clinical hallmark of generalized myasthenia gravis (GMG), cannot be detected in a dynamic way. The … ed with baseline were named ΔTFdi and ΔTmax, respectively. The diagnostic parameter for respiratory muscle fatigue was chosen from ΔTFdi and ΔTmax at different deep breath times according to their ability to distinguish GMG patients from controls and the interrater reliability of TFdi and Tmax. RESULTS: Thirty-four GMG patients and 30 healthy controls were enro …

Muscle mass as a target to reduce fatigue in patients with advanced cancer.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) reduces quality of life and the activity level of patients with cancer. Cancer related fatigue can be reduced by exercise interventions that may concurrently increase muscle mass. We hypothesized that low muscle mass is directly related to higher CRF. METHODS: A total of 233 patients with advanced cancer starting palliative chemotherapy for lung, colorectal, breast, or prostate cancer were studied. The skeletal muscle index (SMI) was calculated as the patient's muscle mass on level L3 or T4 of a computed tomography scan, adjusted for height. Fatigue wa

Altered postural sway following fatiguing foot muscle exercises.

This study investigated the acute effects of fatiguing foot muscle exercises on the maximum muscle strength of the foot and postural control ability. Eighteen healthy young individuals performed fatiguing foot muscle strength exercises, and their toe flexor and ankle plantar flexor strength and postural control ability were measured before and after the exercises. Postural control ability was evaluated using the path of the center of pressure (COP) during three balance tasks: double-leg standing with eyes open; double-leg standing with eyes closed; and single-leg standing with eyes open. After

Muscle strength and fatigue in newly diagnosed patients with myasthenia gravis.

INTRODUCTION: Dynamometry is increasingly used as an objective measurement of muscle strength in neurological diseases. No study has applied dynamometry in untreated newly diagnosed patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). METHODS: Isometric muscle strength at the shoulder, knee, and ankle was determined in 21 MG patients before and after initial anti-myasthenic treatment. Isometric strength was compared with MG evaluation scales. RESULTS: Muscle strength was reduced for knee extensors and shoulder abductors but normal for ankle extensors. Isometric muscle strength did not correlate significant

The effects of muscle fatigue and movement height on movement stability and variability.

Performing repetitive manual tasks can lead to muscle fatigue, which may induce changes in motor coordination, movement stability, and kinematic variability. In particular, movements performed at or above shoulder height have been associated with increased shoulder injury risk. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of repetitive motion-induced muscle fatigue on posture and on the variability and stability of upper extremity movements. Ten healthy subjects performed a repetitive task similar to sawing continuously until volitional exhaustion. This task was synchronized with a m…

Effect of acute hypoxia on respiratory muscle fatigue in healthy humans.

BACKGROUND: Greater diaphragm fatigue has been reported after hypoxic versus normoxic exercise, but whether this is due to increased ventilation and therefore work of breathing or reduced blood oxygenation per se remains unclear. Hence, we assessed the effect of different blood oxygenation level on isolated hyperpnoea-induced inspiratory and expiratory muscle fatigue. METHODS: Twelve healthy males performed three 15-min isocapnic hyperpnoea tests (85% of maximum voluntary ventilation with controlled breathing pattern) in normoxic, hypoxic (SpO2 = 80%) and hyperoxic (FiO2 = 0.60) conditions, i…

Fatigue in frog skeletal muscle fibres and effects of methylxanthine derivatives.

The influence of theophylline and the related drug caffeine on the mechanical performance of fatigued muscle fibre isolated from semitendinosus muscle of Rana temporaria (2.5-6.7 degrees C) was investigated. The fibre was stimulated supramaximally to produce I s fused tetani and 2 s and 10 s partially fused tetani at intervals of 10 min. Fatigue was produced by shortening the contraction interval to 15 and 30 s. This caused a 15-20% decline in the maximum tension during fused tetanus and a 40-50% decline during partially fused tetanus. Theophylline and caffeine (0.1-0.5 mM) did not change the

Respiratory muscle fatigue: a cause of ventilatory failure in septic shock.

The effect of endotoxic shock on the respiratory muscle performance was studied in spontaneously breathing dogs given Escherichia coli endotoxin (Difco Laboratories, 10 mg/kg). Diaphragmatic (Edi) and parasternal intercostal (Eic) electromyograms were recorded using fishhook electrodes. The recorded signals were then rectified and electrically integrated. Pleural, abdominal, and transdiaphragmatic (Pdi) pressures were recorded by a balloon-catheter system. After a short control period, the endotoxin was administered slowly intravenously (within 5 min). Death was secondary to respiratory arrest

Muscle fatigue in myophosphorylase deficiency: power spectral analysis of the electromyogram.

It has been postulated that the power spectral shift in the surface EMG during fatigue is due to accumulation of muscle lactate. This hypothesis has been directly tested by measuring such shift in 3 patients with myophosphorylase deficiency who performed sustained isometric contractions of the quadriceps muscle. It was found that the spectral shift in these patients was greater than that in normal subjects, rendering lactate as a cause of this phenomenon very unlikely. The mechanism of excessive fatiguability in myophosphorylase deficiency is thought to be due to failure of excitation of the m
