Reactions of sulphur mustard on impregnated carbons.

Activated carbon of surface area 1100 m2/gm is impregnated with 4% sodium hydroxide plus 3% Cr(VI) as CrO3 with and without 5% ethylene diamine (EDA), 4% magnesium nitrate and 5% ruthenium chloride by using their aqueous solutions. These carbons are characterized for surface area analysis by BET conventional method and exposed to the vapours of sulphur mustard (HD) at room temperature (30 degrees C). After 24 h, the reaction products are extracted in dichloromethane and analyzed using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Hemisulphur mustard, thiodiglycol, 1,4-oxathiane are observe

[Genesis of malformations of the distal parts of chick embryo extremities (adactylia, hemimelia)].

Two series of experiments were carried out on chick embryos, stages 24 to 28 pairs of somites. (1) Denuded mesenchyme obtained from leg presumptive area previously treated with nitrogen mustard, was grafted into the right flank of embryos, stages 15 to 24 pairs of somites. (2) Conversely, denuded mesenchyme was implanted into the flank of nitrogen mustard-treated embryos. In most of the embryos, a supernumerary abnormal limb appeared; 58% of the legs produced in the first set of experiments had distal parts, whereas only 15% of the legs in the second set of experiments showed toes. Most of the

Occurrence of Mycosis Fungoides in an Iranian Chemical Victim of the Iran-Iraq War with a Long-term Follow-Up: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common form of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Persistent antigenic stimulation has been claimed to play a role in the development of this malignancy. We aimed to show the role of sulfur mustard in the pathogenesis of MF. A 45-year-old man with MF is introduced herein. He was a victim of chemical exposure in 1987 during the Iran-Iraq war. He developed skin lesions 3 years after exposure to sulfur mustard gas at the age of 21. Seven years after his exposure to sulfur mustard gas, a biopsy from the posterior distal part of his calf, which was injured and had bulla, …

Serum level of substance P in patients with lung injuries due to sulfur mustard.

BACKGROUND: Chronic bronchiolitis is the most important problems of chemical victims of mustard gas. Diverse studies suggest that substance P (SP) as a member of tachykinin neuropeptides, has a significant role in the neurogenic inflammation processes of the airways and lungs. We aimed to determine the serum level of SP in chemical victims of mustard gas and compare it with normal subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The chemical victims were divided into the 2 groups of 30:A group with mild to moderate pulmonary symptoms and other group with moderate to severe symptoms and compared with 3(rd) gr…

Possible treatment with medicinal herbs and their ingredients of lung disorders induced by sulfur mustard exposures: a review.

Chemical warfare (CW) agents are toxic synthetic chemicals that affect human's health, and sulfur mustard (SM) is a well-known chemical weapon that caused deaths of victims. The lung is the main target of SM exposure, and there are no definitive therapeutic modalities for lung injury induced by this agent. The possible therapeutic effects of medicinal plants and their active ingredients on lung injury induced by SM were reviewed in this article until the end of June 2021. Medicinal plants including Crocus sativus, Curcuma longa, Thymus vulgaris, Nigella sativa, and Zataria multiflora and also

Chemical footprints of sulfur mustard: GC-MS profiling of methylated degradation products.

Sulfur mustard, a Schedule 1 chemical under the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), poses a significant threat to human health, animals, plants, and the environment due to its persistent nature. Bis(2-methoxyethylthio)alkanes (compounds 10-14), along with Bis(2-methoxyethyl)sulfide (compound 8) and related disulfide Bis(2-methoxyethyl)disulfide (compound 9), were synthesized and investigated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) under both electron ionization (EI) and positive chemical ionization (PCI) conditions. These compounds are structurally analogous to known degradation prod

Role of MAPK/AP-1 signaling pathway in the protection of CEES-induced lung injury by antioxidant liposome.

We have recently reported that antioxidant liposomes can be used as antidotes for mustard gas induced lung injury in guinea pigs. The maximum protection was achieved with a liposome composed of tocopherols (alpha, gamma, delta) and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) when administered after 5 min of exposure of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), a half sulfur mustard gas. We also reported an association of mustard gas-induced lung injury with an activation of MAPK/AP-1 signaling pathway and cell proliferation. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether CEES-induced MAPKs/AP-1 signaling …

Injury induced by chemical warfare agents: characterization and treatment of ocular tissues exposed to nitrogen mustard.

PURPOSE: Mustard agents are highly toxic and abundant warfare chemicals, primarily affecting ocular tissues, with no specific treatment antidote. The purpose of the present study was to examine the efficacy of novel metallocomplexes, known to inhibit the formation of highly reactive free radicals, to reduce ocular injury induced by nitrogen mustard (NM). METHODS: One eye in each of 72 rabbits was exposed to 1% to 2% NM. Topical treatment with eye drops of a metallocomplex--either zinc- or gallium-desferrioxamine (Zn/DFO and Ga/DFO)--was compared with treatment with saline, zinc (chloride), or

Mechanistic Insights and Pharmacological Approaches for Nitrogen and Sulfur Mustards and Their Implications as Therapeutic Agents.

Nitrogen and sulfur mustards, often acting as vesicants, have significant consequences for public health. Skin is a common site for exposure to these vesicants that can result in considerable morbidity and mortality. Given that the treatment options are limited, new insights into the mechanisms for the toxicity of these vesicants that can be translated into preventative/therapeutic strategies are desperately needed. Importantly, like most antineoplastic agents, including chemotherapy, the cytotoxic activity of vesicants such as nitrogen mustard (i.e., mustargen/mechlorethamine) and sulfur must

N-acetyl-L-cysteine protects against inhaled sulfur mustard poisoning in the large swine.

CONTEXT: Sulfur mustard is a blister agent that can cause death by pulmonary damage. There is currently no effective treatment. N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) has mucolytic and antioxidant actions and is an important pre-cursor of cellular glutathione synthesis. These actions may have potential to reduce mustard-induced lung injury. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effect of nebulised NAC as a post-exposure treatment for inhaled sulfur mustard in a large animal model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen anesthetized, surgically prepared pigs were exposed to sulfur mustard vapor (100 μg.kg⁻¹), 10 min) and moni

Evaluation of Free and Released Sulfur Mustard Diols in Human Blood and Urine Using Multi-ionization GC-QQQ and GC-Q-TOF.

Exposures to blister agents such as sulfur mustard (HD) have been documented in both military and civilian settings, underscoring the need for reliable clinical assays and biomarkers for confirming human exposure. Accordingly, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) designates sulfur mustard hydrolysis products (diols) as biomarkers for exposure verification. Because confirmatory analyses in public health and forensic contexts often rely on qualitative identification rather than quantitation alone, we evaluated sensitive qualitative approaches for detecting the diol hyd

Interface and Bimetallic Sites Synergistic Regulation of CuFe2O4/Fe2O3 Nanotubes for High Response Detection of 2-Chloroethyl Ethyl Sulfide Gas.

Mustard gas is an extremely dangerous chemical substance, and its leakage or misuse poses a serious threat to the environment and public health. It is challenging to develop a fast, efficient, and real-time sensor for the detection of the mustard gas simulant (2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide = 2-CEES). In this study, CuFe2O4/Fe2O3 nanotubes were assembled in situ via a controllable solvothermal method. Structural characterization confirms that the CuFe2O4/Fe2O3 nanotubes possesses bimetallic active sites and abundant heterointerfaces, which synergistically enhance the sensing performance of the ma…

Enhancing the stability and catalytic efficiency of alkyl halide dehalogenase through poloxamer temperature-sensitive gel.

Dha A, a biocatalyst with pronounced efficacy in the degradation of mustard gas, is constrained by its inherent instability, which impedes its broader application. In this study, we encapsulated Dha A within a poloxamer-based thermosensitive hydrogel, a widely utilized protein carrier, to assess its physicochemical characteristics, catalytic performance, and stability enhancement. The Dha A-loaded thermosensitive gel (Dha A@TSG) exhibited interactions between Dha A and poloxamer molecules via hydrogen bonding, with an optimal gelation temperature of 25°C. This encapsulation strategy significan…

Medical aspects of sulphur mustard poisoning.

Sulphur mustard is one of the major chemical warfare agents developed and used during World War I. Large stockpiles are still present in several countries. It is relatively easy to produce and might be used as a terroristic weapon. Sulphur mustard is a vesicant agent and causes cutaneous blisters, respiratory tract damage, eye lesions and bone marrow depression. The clinical picture of poisoning is well known from the thousands of victims during World War I and the Iran-Iraq war. In the latter conflict, sulphur mustard was heavily used and until now about 30,000 victims still suffer from late
