[Apparent spontaneous regression of an inoperable kidney cancer].

In 1959, a then 66-year-old woman was undergoing an operation of a renal "tumor". Because of inoperability, only a biopsy was performed. Histologically, a non differentiated hypernephroid carcinoma was diagnosed. 20 years later, in 1979, the patient died of biventriculary cardiac insufficiency. In the autopsy a retroperitoneal "tumor", affecting the kidney, was found and for the present (without knowledge of the anamnesis) diagnosed as a liposarcoma. In knowledge of history, duration and behaviour of the disease and histopathology of the lesion, the "tumor" in question showed to be a twice mis

Spontaneous regression of metastatic malignant melanoma in 2 sibs with xeroderma pigmentosum.

The clinical and pathology findings in 2 sibs with xeroderma pigmentosum (XDP), complicated by metastatic malignant melanoma which underwent spontaneous regression, are described. The pathology of one of these patients showed features of possible spontaneous regression, namely foamy histiocytes, capillary proliferation, and a chronic inflammatory infiltrate which was devoid of malignant cells, suggesting the possibility that an immunological mechanism was at work. It was of interest that a recent review of 27 cases of spontaneous regression of metastatic melanoma since 1900 contained a patient

Spontaneous regression of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia with PAX5 alterations at relapse: a case report.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common pediatric hematological disease representing less than 1% of hematological diseases in adults. The prognosis of ALL improved significantly in the last decades. Almost all patients require a therapy at the time of diagnosis. Rare cases of spontaneous remission of ALL have been described. We report a case of B-ALL that underwent spontaneous remission after an episode of infection and describe the cytogenetic changes associated with this uncommon clinical presentation of B-ALL.

T-ALL presenting with i-TLP-like indolent clinical course with repeated spontaneous regressions.

Rapidly progressing ALL, a potentially fatal disease, demands timely diagnosis and treatment. On the other hand, spontaneous remission/regression (SR) is reported in various cancers including aggressive tumors like ALL. Infection or trauma-mediated immune system activation is assumed to cause SR, with the duration in cases of ALL typically being short. Indolent T-lymphoblastic proliferation (i-TLP) exhibits the uniform proliferation of TdT-positive T-cells, despite being a non-neoplastic disease, underscoring the significance of distinguishing it from T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL

Spontaneous regression of paediatric pituitary lesions-report of 2 cases and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Pituitary lesions are rare in the pediatric population. They consist of a heterogenous group of neoplasms including pituitary adenomas (PA) and Rathke cleft cysts (RCC). Their natural history, management strategies, and long-term outcomes are mostly extrapolated from adult experience. Neurosurgical intervention may be necessary for large and/or symptomatic lesions. Of note, the likelihood of their spontaneous regression is uncommon. We report 2 interesting cases of such a phenomenon for these lesions and discuss our findings in corroboration with current literature. METHODS AND RES

Isolated Epicardial Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis in a Neonate With Complete Spontaneous Regression.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare clonal myeloid neoplasm. Cardiac involvement is exceedingly uncommon in neonates. We report a term male neonate with prenatally detected pericardial effusion and a postnatally identified epicardial mass adherent to the left ventricle. Multimodal imaging demonstrated confinement to the visceral pericardium without myocardial infiltration. Biopsy confirmed LCH (CD1a+, CD207+, S-100+, ALK-, BRAFV600E-) and staging excluded systemic disease. The patient remained hemodynamically stable and was managed conservatively after multidisciplinary evaluation. S

Evolution of maxillofacial brown tumors after parathyroidectomy in primary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: Brown tumor occasionally affects the facial bones. Clinically, these lesions can be mistaken for a neoplasm. Opinions are divided on the course of management of the bony lesions once parathyroidectomy has been carried out. METHODS: We treated 22 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and osteitis fibrosa cystica and observed their clinical and biochemical recovery. RESULTS: Fifteen patients (68.2%) had brown tumors in mandible, and 7 (31.8%) in maxilla. After parathyroidectomy, 21 patients had normal total serum calcium values. All brown tumors presented a spontaneous progress

Transient enlargement of deep medullary veins in encephalitis.

This case report concerns a woman who presented an atypical clinical pattern with some features of encephalitis and other features of brain tumor. Cerebral angiography showed a unilateral cerebral mass with prominence of deep medullary veins, usually interpreted as evidence of a neoplasm. Brain biopsy was interpreted as astrocytoma. Subsequent spontaneous clinical remission and regression of angiographic findings led to a reappraisal of the microscopic interpretation with a final diagnosis of encephalitis. The pathogenesis of cerebral angiographic abnormalities observed with encephalitis is re

The natural history of invasive breast cancers detected by screening mammography.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of screening mammography has been associated with sustained increases in breast cancer incidence. The natural history of these screen-detected cancers is not well understood. METHODS: We compared cumulative breast cancer incidence in age-matched cohorts of women residing in 4 Norwegian counties before and after the initiation of biennial mammography. The screened group included all women who were invited for all 3 rounds of screening during the period 1996 through 2001 (age range in 1996, 50-64 years). The control group included all women who would have been invit

[Spontaneous regression in a case of primary pulmonary lymphoma with Sjögren's syndrome].

A 62-year-old asymptomatic woman had a nodular shadow approximately 3 cm in diameter in the middle lung field on chest roentgenogram. The shadow gradually grew over 1.5 years. She was then admitted to our hospital for evaluation of the abnormal shadow. Transbronchial biopsy specimens showed a diffuse, small, lymphoid infiltrate with predominance of B-cells. These findings suggested neoplastic proliferation. Further examinations revealed the presence of Sjögren's syndrome. Four months later, she was readmitted for surgical resection. Chest roentgenogram on the second admission disclosed that th

Cardiac rhabdomyomas presenting in neonates.

UNLABELLED: Rhabdomyoma is the most common cardiac neoplasm in neonates. Spontaneous regression of such tumors is common, particularly with smaller lesions, followed by resolution of symptoms. Because most of the tumoral masses regress spontaneously, treatment should primarily be symptomatic, while surgical removal is required only in life-threatening situations. Tuberous sclerosis is found in half of the patients with rhabdomyomas. AIM: The aim of our work was to analyze the cases of rhabdomyoma with neonatal presentation in our hospital. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of the

Erythrocytosis and renal cell carcinoma with pulmonary metastases: case report with 18-year followup and brief discussion of literature.

A 42-year-old man was admitted to the Cancer Division of the American MedicalCenter in February, 1956. He had been treated for erythrocytosis beginning 6 months previously, with reduction of his hemoglobin to relatively normal values. On admission, a huge tumor of the left kidney was palable. Roentgenograms of the chest demonstrated small bilateral pulmonary metastases. A left nephrectomy was per formed, followed by wedge resection of a total of 16 metastatic nodules, 12 of which showed metasticrenal carcinoma. It is now 18 years since the last thoracotomy and the patient is well, leading a no
