Second malignant neoplasms pose a concern for survivors of childhood cancer. We evaluated incidence, type and risk factors for second malignant neoplasms in patients included in Berlin-Frankfurt-Muenster protocols for childhood non-Hodgkin lymphoma. 3590 patients <15 years of age at diagnosis registered between 01/1981 and 06/2010 were analyzed. Second malignant neoplasms were reported by the treating institutions and the German Childhood Cancer Registry. After median follow-up of 9.4 years (Quartile, Q1 6.7 and Q3 12.1) 95 second malignant neoplasms were registered (26 carcinomas including 9

The increasing number of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) procedures and lower transplant-related mortality has led to a growing population of survivors facing long-term increased risk of secondary malignancy, including cutaneous neoplasms. In this review, we aim to discuss the incidence, risk factors and preventive strategies for secondary skin neoplasms after autologous and allogeneic HSCT. Cutaneous neoplasms, such as basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, are among the most common solid cancers arising in patients after HSCT. Besides risk factors establis

BACKGROUND: Familial autosomal dominant cylindromatosis (FADC) is a rare disease characterized by multiple cutaneous cylindromas, trichoepitheliomas, and spiradenomas. We present a case of a woman with scalp lesions and a parotid mass.
METHODS: Biopsy of a skin nodule demonstrated cylindroma, and fine-needle aspiration of the parotid mass suggested membranous basal cell adenoma, which was confirmed following superficial parotidectomy. The study includes case report and review of the literature.
RESULTS: Eighteen cases of cylindromatosis with coexistent salivary gland membranous basal cell ad

A series of skin cancers are more frequent or show a worse course and outcome in HIV-treated patients. The leading neoplasms correspond to basal and squamous cell carcinomas, some primary cutaneous lymphomas and malignant melanomas. In these patients, early diagnosis and radical treatment on sight should be considered.

Immunohistochemical studies were performed to establish the distribution of membrane cofactor protein (MCP; CD46), decay-accelerating (DAF; CD55) and homologous restriction factor (HRF20; CD59), in normal skin appendages, and in benign and malignant skin neoplasms. At least two of these regulators were detected on normal eccrine glands, apocrine glands and sebaceous glands. They were also found in cellular naevi (CN), seborrhoeic keratoses (SK), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), Bowen's disease (BD), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and Paget's disease (PD). Although there were slight differences in th

Cutaneous basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in situ is a recently recognized subtype of the skin neoplasm in which the abnormal cells are confined to the epidermis. BCC in situ of the skin was previously referred to as a superficial BCC. A review of the world literature has revealed 10 cutaneous BCCs in situ that have been described in nine patients but likely reflect a more general phenomenon. The neoplasm typically presents as an asymptomatic red plaque on the abdomen, upper extremity, back, and chest. Pathologic changes frequently show confluent tumor cells along the epidermal basal layer or super

We report on a 56-year-old renal allograft recipient receiving cyclosporin A immunosuppression. During this therapy he subsequently developed the following cutaneous neoplasms: squamous cell carcinomas, basal cell carcinomas, Bowen's disease, actinic keratosis, sebaceous hyperplasia, a dysplastic naevus and, finally a nodular malignant melanoma. Adverse effects of the cyclosporin A therapy are discussed, with special reference to dermatologic effects and the implications for patient and doctor.

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia involves the skin in a small percentage of patients and may portend an ominous prognosis in some patients. We report a series of eight biopsies from seven different patients in which the cutaneous leukemic infiltrate was confined exclusively to the region immediately surrounding primary epithelial neoplasms including squamous cell carcinoma (6), basal cell carcinoma (1) and actinic keratosis (1). The malignant lymphocytes appear to constitute a host response to these neoplasms and do not appear to suggest a rapid downhill course for these patients. These observatio

Basal-cell canceris a slow growing, rarely metastasizes, locally malignant skin cancer. Patients with this neoplasm usually have excellent prognosis. Potentially, in some cases, a good prognosis cause a delay in therapy. Delay or withdrawal from treatment might lead to higher local extension of tumour with the destruction of the surrounding tissue. In this article we are presenting two patients with extensive basal cell cancer. The first patient underwent plastic surgery for extensive basal-cell carcinoma located in the parietal and temporal area. The second patient was observed due to recurre

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a common malignant skin neoplasm. The surface of the caruncle contains sebaceous glands, hair follicles, and lacrimal and sweat gland elements. Consequently, the caruncle may spawn any neoplasm that occurs in the conjunctiva, skin, or lacrimal gland. We report a patient with a primary BCC located on the lacrimal caruncle.
METHODS: An 80-year-old man with a 5-month history of a gradually enlarging left caruncular neoplasm was seen. The lesion was nodular and irregularly brown-black colored, with no involvement of adjacent conjunctiva or skin. He had a

OBJECTIVES: To discuss the presentation and management of a rare neoplasm in a previously unreported laryngeal subsite.
METHODS: Case report and literature review.
RESULTS: An 89-year-old woman presented with a subglottic mass, biopsy of which was consistent with basal cell adenocarcinoma. She was successfully treated with surgical intervention and remains disease free 29 months postoperatively.
CONCLUSIONS: Basal cell adenocarcinoma is a rare salivary gland tumor, the laryngeal variant of which is even scarcer. Herein we describe the presentation and successful surgical management of the f

Multiple dermal cylindromas and membranous basal cell adenoma of parotid gland in a 67-year-old woman with Brooke-Spiegler syndrome (BSS) were examined by fine-needle cytology. Histology, immunochemistry, and CYLD germline mutation testing were also performed. Cytomorphology and immunochemistry of the two lesions showed basaloid neoplasms, remarkably similar, composed by proliferating epithelial cells of basal type accompanied by a smaller proportion of myoepithelial cells. CYLD gene showed a novel germline splice acceptor site mutation (c.2042-1G>C) with skipping of the entire exon 15. The oc

Sex steroids have been postulated to influence pathophysiology of human skin through various skin appendages. The presence of sex steroid receptors has been also reported in adnexal tumors but its details still remained unknown. Therefore, in this study, we immunolocalized sex steroid receptor protein (estrogen receptor (ER)alpha, ERbeta, progesterone receptor (PR)A, PRB and androgen receptor (AR)) in 23 cases of non-pathological skin (male: 10, female: 13) and in 50 cases of skin adnexal tumors (male 24, female 26; 38 benign and 12 malignant). ERalpha immunoreactivity was detected exclusively

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive defect in DNA endonuclease activity that is associated with the development of cutaneous malignancies, at sun exposed sites, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Squamous cell carcinomas are also known to target the anterior tongue. Patients sometimes develop angiosarcomas, and these invariably arise from sun-exposed skin. A biopsy was taken from a large mass arising in the anterior tongue of an 11-year-old girl with XP and a history of cutaneous basal cell carcinomas. The histopathologic findings demons

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is one of the most common human malignant neoplasms and is the most prevalent skin cancer in the United States with over four million new cases reported annually.1,2 Most BCCs arise in the skin from exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. However, it is possible for BCCs to present in sun-protected areas due to factors other than sun exposure. We present a case of a basal cell carcinoma located in the nasal vestibule. In presenting this case, we would like to emphasize the importance of attentive full skin examinations, both by physicians and patients, tha

Secondary neoplasms of epidermal adnexal origin have been reported to develop into nevus sebaceous (NS), mainly in adulthood but rarely in children. Four cases of secondary neoplasms were identified in 413 children of nevus sebaceous from 2015 to 2019 by our department, accounting for 1% of all cases. We here report the clinical, dermoscopical, and histopathological features of these tumors, including syringocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP), pilomatricoma, trichilemmoma, and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). We recommend prophylactic excision of nevus sebaceous before puberty, not only because of the

A total of 243 neoplasms were recorded in a survey of all the feline neoplasms which are reported in the registration files of the Veterinary Research Institute, Onderstepoort, Republic of South Africa, covering a 40-year period from 1935 to 1974. The tissues most commonly neoplastic were the skin, followed by the lymphoid tissue, the digestive tract and the genital system, which together accounted for 76,6% of the total tumours. Squamous cell carcinomas, the commonest type of tumour, accounted for 65 (26,7%) of the 243 neoplasms, followed by lymphosarcomas with 50 (20,5%). The majority of squ

Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are the most common skin cancers, occurring mainly on sun-damaged skin of old persons. Basal cell carcinoma is a neoplasm of follicular germinative cells which may infiltrate and destroy adjacent tissues, but rarely metastasizes. Five clinico-pathologic types of basal cell carcinomas can be recognized, namely, nodulo-ulcerative, superficial, morpheiform, fibroepithelial, and infundibulo-cystic. Actinic keratosis and Bowen's disease are intrepidermal proliferation of atypical keratinocytes that eventually may progress to become over squamous cell carcinom
