INTRODUCTION: Ganglioneuroma is an uncommon benign tumor that arises from the sympathetic nervous system accounting for less than 1% of all soft-tissue neoplasms.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 22 year-old man who presented a ganglioneuroma localized in the zygoma.
DISCUSSION: Ganglioneuroma generally develop in the abdomen or thorax soft tissue. The occurrence of ganglioneuroma in the bone is exceptional. To date less than ten cases have been reported, six of which involved the mandible. We discuss the possible causes of tumor development at this site.

Tumor induced osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome caused by mesenchymal tumors that secrete fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). Patients complain of progressive bone pain, muscle weakness and brittle fractures. Delayed diagnosis of osteomalacia caused by a tumor is often found in clinical practice. When verifying the exact localization of the neoplasm, radical removal within healthy tissues is recommended. The article considers a clinical example of FGF23 tumor induced osteomalacia with localization of neoplasm in the tympanic cavity.

Myxofibrosarcoma is a malignant fibroblastic soft tissue neoplasm containing a variable amount of myxoid stroma that commonly presents as a slow-growing mass in elderly patients. The neoplasm may be superficial or deep to the muscle fascia and characteristically has an infiltrative growth pattern with a dominant or multinodular mass. We describe an unusual case of high-grade myxofibrosarcoma of the wrist and forearm that infiltrated the muscles, tendons, and wrist joint, causing bone erosions. The tumor was mistakenly diagnosed as synovitis and a chronic, erosive, inflammatory process. The dif

UNLABELLED: Marginal zone lymphoma is a neoplasm affecting the lymphatic system, including the bone marrow, thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes. This type of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma affects B cells and is estimated to comprise between 5% and 17% of all non-Hodgkin's diseases. The incidence of finding any neoplasm within the foot and ankle has been estimated to be only 2.0% to 3.5% of all patients. However, despite the low incidence of cancer found within the foot and ankle, the clinician must be mindful that the possibility does exist and should thus consider surgically excised soft tissue and bone

Soft tissue tumors encompass a wide variety of mesenchymal neoplasms exhibiting diverse clinical, pathologic, and molecular features. Among these, osteoid and/or chondroid matrix deposition in some soft tissue tumors represents a noticeable characteristic. Unlike matrices present in bone tumors where they likely reveal the respective cells of origin (i.e., osteoblastic or chondroblastic precursors), those existing in soft tissue tumors more often denote a metaplastic phenomenon and reflect the diversity of differentiation these tumors can display. While many soft tissue tumor types can occasio

In a study of 256 non-epithelial neoplasms involving the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and nasopharynx, only two lesions were classified as adipose tissue tumors (one lipoma and one liposarcoma). The lipoma was found incidentally when tissue removed from the maxillary sinus was studied histologically, the patient having been treated with a Caldwell-Luc procedure for maxillary sinusitis. The liposarcoma produced a large mass involving the nasal cavity, maxillary sinus, ethmoid area, hard palate and maxillary, temporal and sphenoid bones. The tumor extended into the cranial cavity and eventual

Primary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a cystic bone neoplasm characterized by disease-defining gene fusions involving the USP6/Tre2 gene. The literature describing gnathic ABC is limited. This case report describes a 27-year-old man presenting with a long-standing left-sided facial asymmetry. Multi-detector computed tomography imaging demonstrated a large expansile lesion positioned within the left condylar head. The lesion was biopsied and resected. The specimen showed a giant cell-rich cystic neoplasm, with fibrous tissue lined by multinucleated giant cells. Next-generation sequencing confir

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KH) is an endothelial-derived spindle cell neoplasm often associated with Kasabach-Merritt syndrome. Most cases arise in infancy and childhood and are soft-tissue tumors. The tumor displays an appearance between capillary hemangioma and Kaposi's sarcoma. We report a case of KH in a 1-year-old girl involving a mass that showed abnormal enhancement of soft tissue superficial to the right temporal bone with partial destruction of the temporal bone, the temporomandibular joint, mandibular condyle, and occipital bone. The physical finding of a discolored mass led cl

Aspiration of lytic bone lesions is an excellent diagnostic test in the initial evaluation of primary bone neoplasia. However, cytologically, it can be difficult to differentiate osteosarcoma (OSA) from other bone neoplasms, including fibrosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, synovial cell sarcoma, and plasma cell myeloma. The purpose of this study is to determine the sensitivity and specificity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining to differentiate OSA from other tumors that express vimentin by immunocytochemistry or immunohistochemistry. ALP is a hydrolytic enzyme present in multiple tissues including

Temporal bone rhabdomyosarcoma is an aggressive entity that simulates chronic otitis ear infection. It is the most common soft tissue sarcoma amongst pediatric patients. Herein, we would like to report a case of temporal bone rhabdomyosarcoma involving a 2-year-old boy who presented with a one-month history of otorrhea with facial asymmetry. Early treatment led to remission of this severe neoplasm.

Osteosarcoma is the most common malignant bone neoplasm. It has a very high metastatic potential, and lungs are the most common site of metastasis followed by bones. Multiagent chemotherapy has been reported to alter the biological behavior of the disease so that the tumor metastasizes to more rare sites such as brain, bowel, and soft tissues. The authors report a case of jejuno-jejunal intussusception caused by metastases from osteosarcoma.

Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare neoplasm, represented by a tumoural mass composed of myeloid blasts, occurring at any anatomical site other than the bone marrow. MS is considered the tissue-based equivalent of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), requiring the same therapeutic specification, independently from the association with previous or coexisting myeloid neoplasms. Isolated breast involvement by MS is exceedingly rare, with only exceptional cases reported in the literature. This work aims to provide a pictorial essay of the main features of breast involvement by MS. Even though it is a rare co

Primary bone lymphoma is an uncommon malignancy, accounting for less than 5% of primary bone neoplasms. Most cases are non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, of which diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is the predominant subtype. On plain radiographs, primary bone lymphoma typically appears as a permeative or moth-eaten pattern of osseous destruction and is often accompanied by an aggressive periosteal reaction. Magnetic resonance imaging typically shows soft tissue extension disproportionate to the degree of cortical destruction. Herein, we describe a diagnostically challenging case in which baseline imaging de

The calcaneus is the largest tarsal bone. Many congenital and acquired disorders affect the bone. Primary disorders arise in the calcaneus itself, whereas secondary disorders arising in the neighboring soft tissues extend into and affect the calcaneus indirectly. Among the primary lesions, congenital, traumatic, infectious, hematologic, neoplastic, and other miscellaneous disorders constitute the majority, whereas various arthritides and soft-tissue neoplasms that arise adjacent to the bone constitute the important secondary calcaneal disorders. Radiographic features of many disorders of the c

The aim of this study was to establish how effective is the use of immunohistochemistry on formalin-fixed bone marrow in diagnosing low-grade B-cell neoplasms. We investigated a series of 41 consecutive patients with bone marrow involvement for whom no other diagnostic tissues were available. The sections were stained with the following antibodies: CD3, CD20, CD79a, CD5, CD10, CD23, anti-cyclin D1 and kappa and lambda light chains. Antigen retrieval was performed using either a microwave oven or a pressure cooker. Labelling was performed with an avidin-biotin-peroxidase labelling system. A fin

A 30-year-old male presented with pain and swelling in the left elbow. Multimodal radiologic evaluation revealed an expansile, lytic bone lesion with fluid-fluid levels and surrounding soft tissue edema, localized in the radial head. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a solid variant of aneurysmal bone cyst (SVABC), an anatomically rare site for such lesions. The lesion was managed with curettage, leading to complete clinical resolution. Teaching point: integrating radiologic and histologic findings to an accurate diagnosis and effective management of SVABC, especially when oc

Indications for endoscopic resection of fronto-ethmoidal osteomas have been progressively expanded thanks to optimization of surgical exposure and the development of dedicated instruments. Curved cutting drills are still suboptimal to treat hard osseous neoplasms of the frontal sinus. We present two patients affected by frontal osteoma treated with an endoscopic procedure using an ultrasonic bone curette. The ultrasonic bone curette may be considered an effective tool to reduce soft tissue manipulation, optimize surgical time and accelerate the healing process. However, the technique requires
