[Synovial fluid cytodiagnosis].

Synovial fluid samples represent only a very small percentage of routine work in a cytology laboratory. However, its microscopic examination allows us to observe different types of cells, particles and structures that, due to their morphological characteristics, may provide relevant data for cytodiagnosis. We present certain aspects related to arthrocentesis, the relationship between the gross appearance of synovial fluid and certain pathological processes, as well as the different techniques for processing and staining the smears. Furthermore, we describe the main cytological findings in vari

Mesenchymal Tumors of the Female Genital Tract: Treatment.

Mesenchymal tumors of the female genital tract include various benign and malignant neoplasms. Mesenchymal tumors may arise from the stroma or associated elements of the organ of origin, such as connective tissue, vascular or neural structures, or others. Malignant mesenchymal tumors of the female genital tract represent a rare group of gynecologic cancers. They are generally aggressive tumors, with a propensity for local and distant recurrence. The mainstay of treatment usually involves surgical excision of the primary tumor. Malignant mesenchymal tumors of the female genital tract are genera

[Antiphospholipid syndrome in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. Presentation of 2 cases].

Antiphospholipid antibodies (APA) have been described not only in systemic lupus erythematosus but also in several inflammatory diseases of the connective tissue, some infections, neoplasms, in pregnancy and even in apparently healthy individuals. Arterial and venous thrombosis are some of the clinical manifestations most frequently associated with APA. Two patients with ankylosing spondylitis with antiphospholipid antibodies are presented. The first patient developed a infarct in the pons as a complication at 34 years of age, with high titres of anticardiolipin antibodies as the only factor p

Neoplastic and nonneoplastic conditions of serosal membrane origin: CT findings.

Computed tomography (CT) is an important imaging modality for diagnosis and follow-up of neoplastic or nonneoplastic conditions of the serosal membrane. The characteristic CT findings of malignant pleural mesothelioma include unilateral pleural effusion, thickening of the mediastinal pleura, and circumferential and nodular pleural thickening of greater than 1 cm. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma manifests as a large mass or diffuse peritoneal thickening without a definable mass and is difficult to differentiate from peritoneal carcinomatosis or tuberculosis. The imaging features of primary se

Naevus superficialis lipomatosus. A clinicopathological report of twenty cases.

Naevus superficialis lipomatosus (NSL) is a rare malformation consisting of multiple or solitary papules usually occurring on the lower trunk or gluteal regions. In this study the clinical features of twenty new cases are described with a detailed account of the histopathology. Notable were the marked variability in the amount of ectopic fat found in the lesions, and the presence of associated abnormalities of the connective tissue, the vessels, and the skin appendages. In early lesions, mononuclear cells differentiating into lipoblasts could be identified around proliferating capillaries. Two

Thyroid cancer and autoimmune connective tissue disorders.

There are substantial data confirming the association between autoimmune disorders, including connective tissue diseases (CTDs), and an increased risk of thyroid malignancy. CTDs and thyroid cancer may co-exist as 2 separate diseases because of their relatively high incidence rates in the population. They can arise from each other due to the increased risk of thyroid cancer in patients with idiopathic inflammatory myositis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic sclerosis, primary Sjögren's syndrome, and systemic lupus erythematosus. Moreover, in some scarce cases, CTDs may act as the paraneoplastic s

[Mortality and risk of cancer in systemic connective tissue diseases].

The systemic connective tissue diseases represent a broad spectrum of multiorgan disorders. This report reviews our current knowledge of mortality and the risk of cancer in these diseases. The relationship between clinical manifestations and reduced survival in systemic sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus and polyarteritis nodosa is addressed in detail. Moreover, we outline the increased risks of cancer in dermatomyositis and lymphoma in primary Sjögren's syndrome, as well as cancer of the bladder in patients with Wegener's granulomatosis who have been treated with cyclophosphamide. A verruciform xanthoma of the lower lip and review of the differential diagnosis.

A careful examination of lips is often neglected by the members of the medical and dental professions; yet the lips reveal a heterogeneous group of lesions ranging from congenital abnormalities to benign and malignant neoplasms. Verruciform Xanthoma (VX) is an uncommon benign inflammatory mucocutaneous condition that occurs in the oral cavity which was first described by Shafer in 1971. It is often associated with pre-existing epithelial and/or inflammatory disorder and is characterized histopathologically by papillary epithelial hyperplasia and the presence of foamy macrophages in connective

[Special mesenchymal neoplasms of the head and neck: Update from the 2022 WHO].

Similar to the approach adopted in the classification of tumors in other organs, a new feature of the current Word Health Organization (WHO) classification of the head and neck tumors is the exclusion of soft tissue tumors from single organs and their inclusion in a separate chapter devoted to them. This applies to tumors that are principally ubiquitous but show a predilection for the head and neck sites. The only exception to this rule represents those entities that are almost restricted to a specific head and neck site/organ (such as nasopharyngeal angiofibroma, sinonasal glomangiopericytoma

Report of two primary renal tumors with myxoid features. Differential diagnosis between benign and malignant entities.

Renal mesenchymal neoplasms are rare entities which can have a benign or a malignant behavior. Herein we describe two renal mesenchymal tumors with myxoid stroma, investigating the wide spectrum of differential diagnosis. With our first case we considered some benign entities such as myxoma, myxoid leiomyoma, and mixed epithelial and stromal tumor; with our second case we considered some sarcomas with myxoid features such as myxofibrosarcoma, low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma, dedifferentiated liposarcoma, and myxoid liposarcoma. During the diagnostic process, it is important to integrate histopat

[Ossified choroid plexus papilloma--case report].

While the calcification has been documented radiologically in 4 - 25 percent of the cases with choroid plexus papilloma, the ossification of choroid plexus papilloma has been reported only in 3 cases on literature. In this paper, we present a case of large ossified choroid plexus papilloma in the right lateral ventricle. A 35-year-old man was admitted with left hemiparesis and headache. Skull X-rays showed an abnormal calcified mass (25 mm x 23 mm x 14 mm) in the right temporal region. CT scan revealed an abnormal high density area protruding into the right lateral ventricle, and a low density

Clinical Characteristics of Malignant Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor Causing Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia.

CONTEXT: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome usually caused by oversecretion of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) from a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT). PMTs are usually benign neoplasms but some of them show malignant characteristics. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical characteristics of benign and malignant PMTs inducing TIO. METHODS: On March 31, 2023, we performed a systematic review of individual patient data analysis in Medline, Google Scholar, Google book, and Cochrane Library using the terms "tumor induced osteomalacia,

[Changes of the elastic fibers and collagen fibers during the development and progression of experimentally induced tongue carcinoma in hamsters].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the extracellular matrix (ECM) and neoplastic progression in hamster with tongue cancer. METHODS: Forty-eight specimens of hamster tongue cancer were divided into control group (n=6) and experimental group (n=42). The pathological grade of the specimens was assessed (including 3 stages, namely atypical hyperplasia, carcinoma in situ and early invasive carcinoma). The sections of the tongue were stained with Masson and aldehyde-fuchsin (AF) staining for microscopic observation of the elastic fiber and collagen fiber changes. RESULTS: Within t

[Soft tissue neoplasms--progress and limits of pathologico-anatomic diagnosis].

Current classifications of soft tissue tumors are based principally on the histogenetic type of the tumor thereby abandoning descriptive terms such as spindle cell sarcoma, round cell sarcoma etc. Insight into the histogenesis of a number of soft tissue tumor types has been gained from electron microscopical studies. In addition, these studies provided valuable data to establish certain neoplasms as tumor entities. Thus, the histogenesis of clear cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses has been traced to melanocytes, and it is now universally accepted that biphasic synovial sarcoma consists of
