Mesenchymal neoplasms of the parotid gland and parapharyngeal space: an FNA cytologic study of 22 nonlipomatous tumors.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal neoplasms of the parotid gland (PG) and para-pharyngeal (PP) space are distinctly uncommon. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy experience with nonlipomatous neoplasms from this site is reviewed. METHODS: Cytopathology and surgical pathology files were examined for mesenchymal PG and PP space neoplasms. FNA biopsy was performed using standard technique. RESULTS: Twenty-two PG and/or PP aspirates from 20 adults (male:female = 1.1:1; age range, 19-84 years, mean age, 50 years) and a 10-week-old infant met inclusion criteria. Biopsy sites included PG (17, 77%) or PP spac

Cutaneous and subcutaneous fibrolipomas in 236 dogs, 2017-2024: a retrospective case series and comparative review.

Fibrolipoma is a well-recognized benign neoplasm composed of adipocytes transected by fibrous connective tissue, but large population studies on these neoplasms are lacking in veterinary medicine. We retrospectively searched for canine cutaneous and subcutaneous fibrolipomas submitted to the surgical diagnostic pathology service of the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (Athens, GA, USA) between 2017 and 2024. We retrieved 236 neoplasms from 64,560 biopsies. The median age of affected patients was 8 y (±2.8 y), with an average tumor size of 2.9 cm (±2.3 cm). The head was the location affe

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura: a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare and slow-growing neoplasms originating from the mesenchymal tissue underlying the mesothelial layer of the pleura. These tumors may have an unpredictable clinical course. Most cases occur in the sixth or seventh decades of life with no gender predilection, and more than 80% of cases are benign. The predominant clinical symptoms and signs are dyspnea, cough, chest pain, finger clubbing and hypoglycemia. However, because many patients are asymptomatic, the incidence rates are affected by the likelihood of its incidental detection, often

Syringomatous tumor of the nipple.

The authors describe two women with locally infiltrative neoplasms of the nipple that exhibited sweat duct differentiation. The findings are compared with those previously recorded for syringomatous adenoma of the nipple. The patients presented with firm, subareolar nodules. Nests, cords, and ducts composed of cytologically uniform squamous cells were dispersed throughout the dermis and also involved subcutaneous tissue and adjacent breast parenchyma. Small keratocysts formed a minor component of the lesions. Additional observations in the present study included connections between tumor and e

An unusual case of giant cell tumor of soft parts in an American Warmblood horse.

Fine needle aspiration and tissue biopsy samples were taken from a subcutaneous mass in the cranial stifle region of a 10-yr-old horse. Key cytologic features included numerous mildly to moderately pleomorphic histiocytic cells admixed with mononuclear inflammatory cells, occasional fibroblasts, multinucleated cells, and hemosiderin-laden macrophages. Based on these features, cytologic differentials included granulomatous inflammation with reactive fibroplasia, histiocytic sarcoma, giant cell tumor of soft parts (GCTSPs), and giant cell tumor of bone. The tissue biopsy supported a diagnosis of

Paraneoplastic Hypoglycaemia in a Patient With Solitary Fibrous Tumor of Pleura.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are rare spindle cell neoplasms, predominantly benign, comprising less than 2% of all soft tissue masses. In rare cases, SFTs can lead to Doege-Potter syndrome, a paraneoplastic condition characterised by hypoglycaemia due to elevated levels of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II). Patients typically present with symptomatic hypoglycaemia related to this hormonal dysregulation. We report the case of a 70-year-old man who presented with weight loss, cough, fatigue, tingling, and episodes of confusion associated with recurrent hypoglycaemia. Chest radiography re

Orbital solitary fibrous tumor with multinucleate giant cells: case report of an unusual finding in an uncommon tumor.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare soft-tissue neoplasm which may occur at any site although it is more frequent in the pleura, mediastinum and lung. Orbital involvement by SFT is uncommon. Giant cells are extremely rare to be seen in a SFT and have been described to be immunoreactive for CD34. We present a case of orbital SFT with multinucleate giant cells expressing CD68 and lacking immunoreactivity for CD34. The differential diagnosis is discussed.

Paratesticular Soft-Tissue Masses in Orchiectomy Specimens: A 17-Year Survey of Primary and Incidental Cases From One Institution.

The paratestis (PT) is defined by the testicular tunics, epididymis, spermatic cord, rete testis, and embryonic remnants. It gives rise to a large diversity of pathologies, including those of soft tissue, which may prompt orchiectomy. We performed a 17-year search of our database for orchiectomies for a PT soft-tissue mass. In a total of 4741 orchiectomy specimens, 138 orchiectomies were performed for primary neoplastic or nonneoplastic masses of the PT soft tissue or had an incidental PT soft-tissue mass. Of these, 65.9% were neoplastic. The mean age was 40.2 years (range: <1 to 87 years) and

Solitary fibrous tumor of the spinal cord.

We report a case of primary solitary fibrous tumor occurring in the intramedullary thoracic spinal cord in a 47-year-old man. The tumor predominately consisted of spindle cells separated by abundant collagen; a few areas of hemangiopericytomatous morphology were also present. The diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. The tumor was reactive to vimentin and CD34 but was negative for glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP), S-100, smooth muscle actin, epithelial membrane antigen, HMB-45, myelin basic protein, and keratin; ultrastructural examination showed fairly u

Myxoid solitary fibrous tumor: a clinicopathologic study of three cases.

While focal myxoid areas are occasionally observed in solitary fibrous tumors, neoplasms of this type exhibiting extensive myxoid change are considered exceedingly uncommon. Due to their rarity, the biologic behavior of myxoid solitary fibrous tumor has not been determined. Three cases of myxoid solitary fibrous tumor are described in order to better characterize the clinical and pathologic features of this uncommon variant of solitary fibrous tumor. The tumors occurred in one man and two women, with ages of 37, 47, and 58 years, respectively. Sites of involvement included the retroperitoneum,

Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma of the Craniofacial Region: A Diagnostically Challenging Case Report.

Cellular fibrous connective tissue, which eventually mineralizes, replaces normal bone in a class of illnesses known as benign fibro-osseous lesions. Fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma, and osseous dysplasia are the three most common forms of benign fibro-osseous lesions. Because of their overlapping clinical, radiological, and histological features, many disorders can be challenging to diagnose. Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is considered a central neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that differentiates into bone and the periodontium. This has also sparked significant debate over its terminolo

[Pleura solitary fibrous tumor associated with Doege-Potter Syndrome].

The Doege-Potter Syndrome is known as a combination of intrathoracic tumor associated to symptomatic hypoglycemia. Solitary Fibrous Tumor is a mesenchymal neoplasm. Initially, it was described in the pleura, however, it starts out in any organ or tissue at the expense of a stromal CD34+ cell. Most of the patients are asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis. Symptoms such as cough, dyspnea, chest pain, and hypoglycemia due to production of IGF-2 have been reported (Doegge- Potter Syndrome). Others described paraneoplastic profiles are hypertrophic osteoarthropathy and in some cases galactorrhea.

Multiple calcifying fibrous tumor of the pleura: A case report.

Calcifying fibrous tumor of the pleura (CFTP) is a rare benign tumor of the thoracic cavity. Due to the low incidence of CFPT, it is prone to be misdiagnosed because intraoperative analysis of frozen section is a challenge for pathologists. At present, it is difficult to distinguish this tumor from other benign thoracic tumors based on radiographic features. Therefore, surgical resection is the best method for definite diagnosis and treatment.

[Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura in 75-year old woman].

A 75-year-old asymptomatic woman with stable coronary heart disease presented tumor in lower left lobe on routine chest radiograph. A CT scan showed a large sharply delineated mass at this site (84 x 52 x 90 mm). There were no signs of infiltration, no abnormalities were seen in mediastinal structures and on the right side. The pedunculated tumor was resected during left thoracotomy (posterolateral incision). Histological examination revealed spindle-like cells and rich collagen net. Mitoses and necrosis were absent. Final diagnosis was: solitary fibrous tumor of the visceral pleura. During 7-

Extrathoracic solitary fibrous tumors: their histological variability and potentially aggressive behavior.

The histological variability of solitary fibrous tumors may contribute to the difficulty in diagnosing these neoplasms, especially when they arise in extrathoracic sites. Like intrathoracic lesions, the behavior of extrathoracic solitary fibrous tumors is currently unpredictable because these types of tumor have only recently been recognized. This study therefore was undertaken to examine the clinical behavior and histological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features of 24 extrathoracic solitary fibrous tumors with long-term follow-up. The patients comprised 10 men and 14 women, betw

Association between gallbladder agenesis and choledochal cyst: cause or coincidence?

This case report describes an extremely rare association between gallbladder agenesis and choledochal cyst (CC). A 9-year-old girl presented with recurrent abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant. Radiological studies revealed a CC type IVa and an agenesis of gallbladder and cystic duct. Due to the possibility of biliary neoplasm, the patient underwent cyst resection and hepaticoduodenostomy. Histopathological findings showed inflamed fibrous tissue covered by biliary epithelium with no evidence of malignancy.
