OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of cefoperazone-induced acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) in which the diagnosis was supported by renal biopsy.
CASE SUMMARY: A 35-year-old woman presented to our hospital with decreased urine output and no past history of renal problems. Fifteen days prior to presentation, she had started treatment with intramuscular cefoperazone 1 g/day for a scalp infection. On day 12 of therapy, the patient noted decreased urine output, anorexia, and weakness, but she continued taking cefoperazone for 3 more days. Hemodialysis and oral prednisolone 1 mg/kg (30 mg twice daily

We are reporting a case of a 69 years old man developed acute renal failure due to interstitial nephritis during treatment with the drug clozapine, and that improve after to discontinuation of this drug. The clozapine is a new antipsychotic drug that may produce severes adverses reactions, like medullary toxicity. Recently 10 cases of clozapine-induced AIN have been reported. We want to associate to the cases publicated with a new case because it is a severe adverse reaction.

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that is used commonly in the treatment of acid-peptic disorders. Although omeprazole is generally well tolerated, serious adverse effects such as renal failure have been reported. Thus far, 17 cases of acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) secondary to omeprazole have been described. Another case of AIN is described in a 36-yr-old woman presenting with nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and a rising serum creatinine concentration. Omeprazole therapy had ceased 2 wk before admission. AIN was diagnosed by renal biopsy and corticosteroid therapy was initiated. After

Endourological surgical procedures (transurethral resection and fulguration, Nd-YAG-laser application) for the treatment of interstitial cystitis (IC) have been evaluated only in a few studies. Theoretically, they could be the next step in a therapeutic concept after conservative measures have failed and before open surgery is performed as an ultima ratio. However, our review of the literature suggests that to date there is no scientific evidence to support endourological techniques in the treatment of IC.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disorder in which the lungs or intrathoracic lymph nodes are involved in more than 90% of patients with the disease. It occasionally involves kidneys most commonly due to disordered calcium metabolism. Granulomatous interstitial nephritis is a distinct renal pathology in sarcoidosis. Renal dysfunction due to granulomatous interstitial nephritis is rare. We recently encountered a sarcoidosis patient without hypercalcemia and any evidence of pulmonary involvement which is distinctly unusual.

Mumps is still a common childhood disease in rural areas where mumps vaccination is not widespread. A 14-year-old girl with fatal interstitial nephritis as a complication of mumps is reported. The patient had not been vaccinated with mumps vaccine and had contracted mumps during a village epidemic. The illness began with parotitis, and renal insufficiency developed within a week. The patient's renal function rapidly deteriorated and the outcome was fatal. The postmortem renal necropsy sample demonstrated interstitial mononuclear cell infiltration, edema, and focal tubular epithelial cell damag

An acute interstitial nephritis was found in a patient with sudden renal failure and lung infection caused by Legionella pneumophilia. Our patient regained and maintained normal renal function after a short period of dialysis support. The diagnosis should be considered in any patient with a chest infection complicated by acute renal failure especially if confusion is disproportionate to the degree of uremia.

A 16-year-old male presented with seizure to an outside hospital and was found to have severe kidney dysfunction of unknown chronicity. He had dilute urine throughout the hospitalization and a negative serological work-up for acute glomerulonephritis. Exposure history was notable for 1-2 doses of ibuprofen and ondansetron use for nausea for the 3-4 days prior to the admission. All prior medications were discontinued, and he was started on levetiracetam for seizure management. Kidney function markedly improved on hospital day 4, and a planned kidney biopsy was cancelled. Kidney function continu

Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) is a cause of acute kidney injury and characterized by an inflammation of the tubulointerstitial space, leading to a decline in kidney function. Multiple etiologies can cause AIN including medications, autoimmune diseases and infections. A multiplicity of drugs is associated with AIN, while antibiotics (especially beta-lactams), proton-pump inhibitors (PPI) and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) are the most common. The pathognomonic triad of exanthema, fever and eosinophilia is rarely present in AIN patients. Treatment of medication-associated A

Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) classically presents as acute kidney injury most often induced by offending drugs. Less frequently it is secondary to infections, autoimmune disorders, or idiopathic conditions. Development of drug-related AIN is not dose dependent and a recurrence can occur with re-exposure to the drug. We present a 50-year-old male with treatment resistant schizoaffective disorder who developed clozapine-induced AIN, confirmed with kidney biopsy within 2 months of taking this medication. His kidney function improved with removal of the drug and treatment with steroids. Howe

We present a patient with an acute kidney injury thought secondary to acute interstitial nephritis as a result of vedolizumab maintenance therapy for Crohn's disease. This appears to be a rare but serious side effect in patients receiving this treatment which clinicians should consider in the event of renal dysfunction.

Drug-induced acute interstitial nephritis (DI-AIN) is a drug hypersensitivity reaction (DHR) that manifests 7 to 10 days after exposure to the culprit drug. DHRs account for fewer than 15% of reported adverse drug reactions. The kidneys are susceptible to DHR because: (1) the high renal blood flow whereby antigens are filtered, secreted, or concentrated, and (2) it is a major site of excretion for drugs and drug metabolites. More than 250 different drugs from various classes have been incriminated as causative agents of DI-AIN, the third most common cause of acute kidney injury in the hospital
